The Fish Locker

Coastal Foraging along the low tide line can uncover so many incredible things. Amazing sea creatures and delicious treats. Join me on the shoreline where I teach about collecting many different delicious clams and shellfish. How to identify them and how to check they are safe. I then demonstrate how to clean and purge the shellfish before my son and I take them for a winter campfire cookup. I hope you enjoy joining us.

The foraging is amazing, your commitment to safety at the start of these videos excellent,your knowledge and knowledge shared is what made me watch in the first place. But it’s the father son relationship that sets this channel apart both with you and James and you and your father in law. Watching him sit across from you little hands wrapped around a little scallop sandwich. Wanting to be just like dad is going to be a foundational memory he’ll think about when he is 80

My dad was like this. He would take my brothers and I as well as my cousins fishing all the time and show us the different sea creatures on the shore. We eventually grew up and we’re no longer interested in it. Only when my dad passed away did we realize how special these times were. We keep all his fishing gear safely and miss him terribly.

James will treasure these memories and special times with his Dad. ❤️ Mine has been gone many years now, but I think of him and smile daily remembering the time we had together. Our activities were very different than yours, but I think it's the time together that matters more than what you're doing.

i think it's so sweet how you make james feel comfortable about trying new things and respecting his small boundaries about food and I've only been watching for a couple months, but in videos where you forage with him you are so gentle and encouraging. in this video I'm proud of james for trying scallops and he ended up liking it! he is lucky to have a great dad to look up to!

@@TheFishLocker I remember being, not bullied, maybe just excessively encouraged to try mussels for the first time. It ended with a table covered in beetroot vomit and a family meal being evacuated for decontamination. Seeing your lad trying scallops has made me realize i should probably revisit shellfish, 25 years later... That said i would love a dinosaur or a turkey twizzler right now.

Foraging level: Expert - Knowledge and respect. - Gather what you need, not what you can. Parenting level: Godlike - That is how you "make" children try new foods. Let them see you enjoy them for a while, and eventually they will want to try (again). Especially when you create this cozy environment, so they have a positive mindset when trying. - Many parents are so afraid of letting their children explore using sharp tools, they end up protecting them from learning motor skills, and how to interact with, and manipulate objects. I am so grateful to my parents for teaching me, and allowing me to use knives and axes at a young age. - Time. Spend time together. You two really do poke my heart in an incredible way. Thank you.

I am glad that the video and message transfers across. I call it Snipervising. It’s supervising at a distance. I give him enough encouragement and space for him to explore and experience on his own but close enough that I can ensure he doesn’t get into danger. ❤ wow, brilliant video as always and well done James. I used to forage with my grandmother for cockles, winkles and whatever else she could find and cook, it’s funny because back then I can remember feeling embarrassed that we were doing that and my mates were eating McDonald’s or whatever, we were pretty poor but I didn’t realise the knowledge she had and was passing on was priceless! I’ve forgotten most of it over the years but now I’m determined to re educate myself again 🙂👍

I can't wait to show my Dad this video, he's a freshwater fisherman and has always been very interested in the ecosystems of rivers, etc. But I think he'd love this! It's so interesting. I don't watch KZbin much anymore but still enjoy your content

Since discovering your channel ive always found your videos most wholesome and educational. And now that i saw James eat his first scallop and also his first lobster bit a few videos ago and like it, i just realised that I've watched him grow up and develop under so much love and care and guidance from his parents. Its just so pure and wholesome to see children having great parents and creating memories together that will stick with them as core memories and validating experiences their whole lives. I hope you as parents feel validated and appreciated too, because you are doing a fenomemal job at teaching patience, acceptance and supporting your children to have faith in themselves and in you as parents and providers of such a loving safe space 💕

As I've written to you before, my kids like to watch your videos with me. We don't live near an ocean and have never done any foraging, but we enjoy learning about it. We're hoping to forage together one day next summer perhaps. My 4 year old wants to know if you like the taste of winkles and dog whelks. (I think mainly because he think their names are funny sounding.)
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker Жыл бұрын
Haha. They do have interesting names don’t they. I enjoy a lot of shellfish, winkles are not high on the list but they are edible. They have an unusual squishy texture and just tastes of the sea. Scallops and clams are much sweeter. 😊👍🏻

Heck John, that first scallop, I thought you were gonna teck ya fingers off 😂 nice one mate, gonna try looking for cockles and scallops on a spring tide, me and the family are often foraging winkles and muscles, it amazes me these days, how many people ask us what we're doing, and have no idea of the tastiest sea food for free, right at you're feet.
