Great install video. Two questions for you: My window is 21.5” wide. Is it possible to modify the bracket at all to make this work? I have aluminum frame windows from the 80s- How far out does the unit and/or mounting bracket stick out from the exterior wall? Want to install to window facing narrow balcony. thanks in advance!

It's not that new of a concept. It's a modern version of an old ac unit that allows a window to be closed. The difference is that this is using a mini-split /ductless system in an AC design. it's brilliant none the less. There's another company that makes an AC that sits below the window for modern windows that doesn't have a sill and the top part of the ac doubles as a shelf or false sill.
@ryans413

It was probably a team of people that wanted AC but also did not want to sacrifice a window but also wanted it to be silent and safe. I feel one person came up with the design another found a way to make it silent and another person found away to still use the window and have it lock for safety.

Yeah, how's it holding up? I just bought the Midea 5000 BTU at walmart. Granted, it's too small for the room size, but I've never had problems with other brands cooling, just need to use fans strategically placed. But it's going right back to the store tomorrow; it's not even blowing cool air out. I know it's super hot and humid, but I should be feeling cold air sitting in front of it. Portable A/C's have worked ok. But, not too sure on this brand at this point. Seems hit or miss.

Just a little tip for anyone installing a compressor-based cooling device, which can include an air conditioner, freezer, refrigerator, or even a dehumidifier - it is important to let the coolant levels stabilize over 24 hours before powering it on for the first time. This means keeping the unit level in its normal operating position for a full day. If you had to tilt it to install it, or when you bought it, etc you will need to do this. What happens if you don't? If the cooling device was stored on its side for even a few hours, you can end up with a coolant leak or a rupture in the lines. You can also fry the compressor. The potential damage varies depending on how far it was tilted and for how long. It may not seem like a huge deal but it's one of those simple things you will really only need to do ONCE (as long as you don't move it again) to ensure trouble-free operation.

There's no coolant in those systems, it's called freon and you're right about letting it sit for some hours but it's so that the oil drains back into the crankcase of the compressor to prevent a hydrolocked condition

@@newtonraymond77 Coolant is any fluid that facilitates cooling by transferring heat from one element to another. A fluid is a liquid or gas. Freon is a coolant, which is compressed to a liquid then evaporated into a gas to transfer heat. If the coolant is part of a refrigerator, it may be called a refrigerant, but it's fundamentally the same thing.

I purchased a couple of 10,000 BTU units from Costco a couple of months ago, and installed them in two windows that are on the second floor of our house. The installation was fairly easy, and no need to go outside at all. The only hiccup was that our windows are four feet wide so we had to make some adaptions by using a leftover piece of metal frame from an Ikea kitchen cabinet to extend the sliding brackets.

HA. I've got one window that is close to 4ft. As the owner of a 110yo house, I save all kinds of brackets, lumber, steel, etc. from other projects. Of course, it helps to have tools and the ability/space to store things and fabricate parts. I have had this installed for 2 summers. Here is my long term experience: * Installation without drilling or screwing into your existing structure is possible, which is good since I rent. * Measure the thickness of your window PLUS how far lift\grab handles extend out. I have almost no tolerance left for a thicker window or larger handle. * The AC design accumulates more condensation and moisture internally than traditional designs. If uninstalling, have plenty of towels and a mop near by. * The wifi cannot negotiate wifi networks that do not broadcast their SSIDs, so it will disconnect from a hidden network and stay offline. * The plastic brackets used to hold the foam breaks easily. * Purchase extra foam to block the gaps the metal brackets allow against your window frame. * The included exterior support bracket may not be compatible with your window situation, it wasn't with mine as I have a large concrete ledge outside. Mine sits on large solid rubber pads made for planters.

This is definitely one of my best purchases in the last couple of years. Your installation video was super helpful as well! I bought a scratch and dent 12,000 BTU unit from Amazon last winter for approximately $170. Had to take it apart and hammer out the dents, but it works just fine. Love the mounting bracket. I love the water drain pan inside it. I love the extreme low noise level. I love the high efficiency. I got rid of my old 10,000 BTU conventional ac because the styrofoam drain pan would constantly plug up and overflow down the wall. It was difficult to clean. This one has a plastic pan with high lip. It's easy to keep clean too! It's mid July now and this AC rocks. I live in a 125 year old farm house of about 1000 square feet. I have gone to extreme and insulated it far beyond normal. This one window unit keeps the house at or below 70ºF when it's above 90ºF outside. The bedroom area where it's located gets pretty cold, though. I have a tower fan to circulate air around the house. It's plugged into a Watt monitor. When the outside is in the 80's it draws around 400 watts in day and 200 at night when it drops to high 60's. When it's in the 90's I think I've seen it as high as 600 watts, maybe 700 watts (once). It's supposed to be rated at 1000 watts. I can't imagine it running at full power. I've not seen that high of a power consumption. When it was cold outside this spring it drops to 7 watts and will run at 30 to 100 watts. I love that it's so quite and you never hear the compressor kick on and off.

Have you seen any water draining out of the unit from the exterior section? I was wondering how the design transfers the moisture collected from the evaporator on the inside to the outside half to get eliminated. I thought there may have been some kind of active pump system, but it doesn't seem to have that as far as I can see from looking in at the evaporator through the filter. When my unit is running, I don't see any water draining out the back as with the standard type AC units, so I was wondering where it goes.
@geraldmoore6257
@geraldmoore6257 9 ай бұрын
Yes lots of water drains out. I added an aluminium trough to direct the flow of condensate so that it didn't run down the window brace and onto the siding. I assume the plastic tray carries the water out to the heat radiator and assists in cooling and the excess just overflows. It has to be humid to overflow, otherwise it gets evaporated by the heat radiator.@@dubmob151

Plus you gotta worry about the air handler and ducting too. A couple of 12k BTU of these while not cheap, about 500 each or $1000 for 2, still might be a lot cheaper. My biggest worry is how well it seals up against bugs. Thats the problem I had with a past (traditional) window unit. I dont know if it was my imagination, but in bed at night with the window unit I was itching a lot. Wonder if chiggers were getting in, if that's even possible. and I've seen it mentioned on a YT review by a guy who has one of these mideas. He said spiders and ants were getting in with the midea. That's my fear. But they were getting in the little holes at the bottom, which you could either caulk or midea is now including sticky foam to seal up. The rest of the side seal son this guys installation looks solid, but he didn't even mention or look at the underside, under the main control block where the other guy had issues. Besides the idea if my central breaks, another idea I've had is to get one of these for just my room. I live alone and as such only need my bedroom cooled all night. And I like it cold (68) at night, but warm (~74) during the day. However, I'm wildly guessing I might save 30 a month, for the maybe 8-9 months of summer a year (I live in Texas, heh) thats 240-270 a year savings best case. So that would probably take a couple years to even pay off the unit. Just not sure it's worth 240 a year to lose the comfort and convenience of central AC currently. For example, having the rest of the house be hot initially when starting off the day, etc. But I'm considering it!

@Chill Will "repairing" a central unit is extremely expensive, almost any small repair will cost at least $1000 in my opinion which is the same cost as two of these Midea (12000 BTU unit, the 8000 BTU in the vid is 368) For example after I moved into my house, about 3 yrs in the AC just stopped working. IIRC it was a freon leak. The guy told me it was the compressor, would be at least $1800. BUT it was compressor that uses the old Freon, which the EPA banned so it would be extremely expensive, and hard to find, if I ever had a Freon leak or anything in the future. IIRC it was like hundreds of dollars to fill up the old freon. Or I could just get a new unit and be on the new Freon which would be available in the future. And the decision was mine. I weighed everything and just went with the new unit, which the big places in town were wanting $4500 to do, this was 8 years ago in a rural area on a 1100 sq ft house. I found a mom n pop guy who did it for I believe 3400 hundred, and thank goodness he did a good job. The thing is the EPA is always banning freon, I believe they have done it again at least with cars, so you are always going to be on the "old" freon forever and basically need a new unit. I also very recently had thermostat issues, and that ended up actually costing me about 500 dollars (!). Just recently I had leaking issues with the air handler in the attic too (drain line clogged) With central you have a air handler, and ducting in the attic. It's very complex. So much that can go wrong and cost big dollars. I am dreading the inevitable probably when my heat strips wear out. This is why mini splits are gaining popularity. If you look at it, ducting is really a pretty complicated, inefficient way to do things. All I'm saying is if you're broke, and suddenly faced with a $4k-$10k HVAC repair bill, buying a window unit for 200 or 300 or even 500 as at least a stopgap starts sounding pretty dang good. Since I live clone and only need my bedroom heated/cooled at night, cooling/heating the whole house just for the bedroom is also very inefficient as well. For this reason I already got a space heater, which is easy and cheap. But I would like to figure out a cooling solution. Either a portable AC or one of these Mideas. $400 for either is a lot though just to take a flyer! I mean I agree central is definitely the best solution if you can afford it. If you dont mind just paying thousands to repair if needed. But with Democrats in power more and more of us will be poor, and it may be a luxury we dont have.

@Chill Will if youre under warranty. I got a ten yr warranty on my new unit and time freaking flies, it's already like 8 yrs in. In 2 yrs I wont be covered. Warranty is also parts only. Probably half the cost of a major repair is labor. The $200 you quote is basically just a service call minimum. So yeah if he can come out, fix it within a half hour and the part is paid for by warranty. So something small like a capacitor. Anyways i thought ten was standard, thats what I got on my goodman brand. Maybe you paid extra for an extended warranty. All I'm saying is IF the warranty is out and a big repair comes up, slapping in a window unit will be tempting! You gotta admit these Mideas's are really nice. But it depends on a lot of factors of course. Hopefully my unit will keep going for many years to come. It should.

In that case you are correct. If they only have one host to blow the hot air out that is an incredibly stupid and illogical design if you engineering and how an air conditioner works. All the air that hose blows outside has to be replaced and come from somewhere. And guess where it comes from? It's sucking outdoor air into the house , At whatever temperature and humidity the outdoor air is. The portable models with 2 hoses are designed correctly. This unit is great and super quiet. The best AC I've had in 20 years for sure. With that said, these old ladies claiming it's an easy install are not being honest. Just go to the companies actual install video, and you'll see all the legitimate complaints about how difficult it is. If you watch this guy's video closely (and he's sponsored by the company) he has to edit parts of his video and run to a hardware store and buy outside product just to finish his install. The reality is this:.It's a GREAT AC unit that runs super smooth and quiet. But the installation of it is a mega pain in the ass.

Its decently quiet and cools a 500 sqft room really easily, can stand in front of this thing 10 feet away and feel the air being pushed. Remote that comes with it is kinda iffy but the phone app works well. Recommended it to a friend in Texas with all this heat and he's really happy with it as well. For anyone wondering how how hard it was to install, the hardest part was getting it out of the box.

Most of it was on a remote thermostat and about a week off the remote (batteries died in the controller and I just haven't plugged it in again but will). The unit is still running perfectly - the compressor isn't damaged at all as hinted by another subscriber. The best part is that I've saved approximately $30 a month on my power bill. 22:00 I have vinyl replacement windows that are similar to yours. What I would do to prevent any possibility of voiding the warranty on the windows by drilling any holes, is get either a 1 inch dowel, or a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of wood, measure and cut it to length from the top of the lower window sash, up to the top of the window frame. If your measurements are precise enough, you won't need anything to hold the "lock" in place. You can also paint the wood to match the color of your window to almost camouflage it. For added security, put one of these on each side of your window. I really like this because it doesn't put a lot of downward pressure on the vinyl window frame like a traditional window A/C does.

Great window A/C, bought (2) 8000BTU units last summer after researching. Found a comment about Mosquito attraction, after looking it over, I don't doubt it, there's no drainage at the low spots underneath. It supposedly evaporates the water, some other A/C manufacture's make the same claim, but under high humidity conditions, your going to have standing water...trust me. Lots of engineering went into this A/C unit, but Midea really should have made drain holes at the low points (perhaps an oversight), some window A/C’s do, preferably with a hose attachment option. This doesn’t detract from it, just lay it on its side, prick-punch and drill one ¼” hole on each side at the low spot. Probably can just drill one hole, but there are two specific low pocket points on each side, and I didn’t want any water accumulating that might attract mosquito’s. Be SUPER CAREFULL not to let the drill poke-through much at all, because there’s radiator coils very close by, so ease off when the drill is about to go through. I was very glad I took the time to do this after seeing water pouring off my porch roof corner on hot humid summer days, no mosquito's here.

I purchased this as well and have been using it for a month so far. My thoughts below using it in a bedroom. 1. The plastic lid or air damper or whatever it is called where the air comes out rattles at times. I think it has to do with the plastic on plastic construction but I put a little rubber gasket on the end of the plastic nib and it helped to reduce it. 2. The plastic air intake on the front (which can be removed to clean the air filter) does rattle at times too. I think some foam or tape would help reduce it. 3. It does cool very very well, it's probably overkill for my small bedroom but it does wonders. 4. The newer models have the ability to turn off the LED lights via remote or the app. 5. It is actually quite quiet, however if you have sensitive hearing there is a high pitch hum or noise you can hear (electronics noise) if you're at a certain angle or spot from it. Which so happens to be exactly where I sleep. Overall it's a very good AC unit for the price and as far as I am concerned, actually very efficient. Other KZbinrs have shown how much power it uses and I believe it's roughly 300 watts on Eco and 500 watts normally. Very good video by the way as well! Good instructions for installation and your thoughts on it as well. Also the remote is glow in the dark so you'll notice it when you're sleeping if you don't flip it over!

What a terrific design! I must say that I have never seen anything quite like it. Also, having the inverter built-in makes a huge difference when the AC turns itself on, instead of suddenly drawing a large amount of electricity to start the compressor, the inverter slowly increases the power at a gentle rate, which also saves wear and tear on the compressor itself. My 9k BTU Mini-split heat pump has the same type of inverter which I run on Lithium batteries from my class A RV rooftop which is covered in solar panels.

Those upside down U model are probably much preferable than this for safety reasons... Less likely to actually fall off your window. But, the design limits on which windows it would be able to fit and hang on to. This correct U design looks less safe, but definitely miles safer than the classic box design. And this one comes with a supporting bracket!

Honestly 1 of the better investments we made in our home, we got 2 of the 10K BTU units for the kids’ rooms and 1 of the 12K BTU unit for our master. These units do the job VERY WELL and quietly too, and the electric bill has not gone bananas either. We had some shipping delays as they came out of Cali around time of the wildfires at beginning of summer season but were well worth the wait!

Fun fact, if your window has a half screen and you leave the screen “open” and at the top of the window opening, you can lower the top window down to get fresh air into the room if you’re not using the air conditioner.

Great video! The explanations were spot on and the video itself was clear and at the proper angles. My wife watched with me and is completely sold on this AC for our bedroom, and if we didn't have fairly new units around the house we'd use them everywhere. Much cheaper than installing mini-splits, although those would be great for heat too. These are so efficient too, but that doesn't matter to us since we went with solar and have excess. I'll be re-watching this video when we get ours to install in a few days.

I personally have the 10K unit. I've had it for a year now. One thing to note, make sure you tilt your unit a little more than 5 degrees toward the outside, or you will have a water puddle on your inside flooring. The inverter makes this thing a dream for electric bills. I don't even turn my whole house AC on, unless its a must now. I just close some doors, and use this in my living room, and kitchen area. When its 100 degrees outside here, mine will keep the 2 rooms at about 76 degrees. Wish I had ordered the 12000 btu version. The chirp everyone complains about is just the compressor spooling up. It only noticeable when first turned on, or when the compressor has been off for over an hour. Otherwise, you'll never hear it. Cleaning the filter. vacuum it! Then, take some cleaner (I use Spray Nine), and mist it, wipe it down, and stick it back in. Thanks for this great video!

Installed today and it took no time. Your video helped a bunch! THANK YOU! To be honest I didnt even have to open the instruction book. My thoughts, just buy it! This thing is super quiet and cools a very large over 500 sq ft dormer style room with cathedral ceilings. I purchased the 12,000 BTU and have no regrets. I do have whole house AC that couldnt quite cool this 3rd floor giganic room. Whats nice is now I don't have to run my whole house AC nearly as much and wil save $$. As far as opening the window I really see no need to let wasp and other flying insects so I don't care about that feature. Now if you are going to open the window remove the gray insulation that fills that void or it will get tucked in between the panes which is a pain lol. As far as mini blinds go YES they will fit behind the unit and you can use the wand to tilt them open and closed. Finally I purchased the three year extended warranty and after reading the manual it says it has a 5 year limited warranty so I'll be cancelling that warranty and get my 75 bucks back. Final thoughts. BUY IT and stay cool! A big thanks to The Fixer!

You could just put a small expandable curtain type rod (or two) on the top of the sash leading to the window frame top, it's pretty hard to compress one of those enough to lift the sash or displace the rod if you're trying to lift the window up from the outside..

Great video, thank you! I just bought the 12000 BTU at Costco for $319! My only concern is that you have to remove all of the installation kit parts after each season, which will mess with the durability of the holes and foam, over time. To me, that seems like quite a headache each year...especially if you're a renter. But otherwise, there's nothing like it out there. Have a great day.

I'm an older guy and lifting the box onto the cart and then into the van gave me pause even though it's only about 60lbs, but after seeing the way you installed yours I know I can handle it from inside where the window is 30 inches from the floor as opposed to 5 feet on the outside. Wasn't looking forward to lifting the unit above my chest, or working outside for that matter. Thank you.

I’ve had this model in my bedroom for about a month now. It is great! I have no complaints at all. It’s so quiet I just don’t hear it unless I make a point of it. (The remote isn’t great, but it works.) Sealing up around the unit once it’s in place took a bit of figuring out - my window is apparently a little different than what the Midea designers had in mind. Otherwise, this is a fantastic window a.c.!

Great video. I was able to follow the directions with no difficulty. This was extremely helpful. I watched a few minutes of the video then went and did that step then came back and watched the next step being done. I love the quietness of this AC compared to other ACs I have owned. The only issues I had with the installation involved the fact that my window wasn't exactly typical and I had to create a few shims to work around the window structure.

If you have triple track storm windows the installation is much more difficult. It requires you to assemble wooden blocks screwed to the interior window sill such that the height raises the bracket so it can clear the height of the storm window frame. This results in a much larger gap between the bottom of the window and the sill which makes air sealing more difficult. I needed to build up about 2 1/4 inches on the sill. Which also results in holes being drilled into the sill - which is unsightly in the winter. It would be better if they had an optional kit to help with this. Also, there is a sloped roof outside of the window I installed this in. There isn’t enough room for the supports to hang down properly. I had to put some shims on the roof and have the feet of the supports resting on their back edge on top of the shim. Also my windows don’t have a very deep jam so there was no easy place to screw the bracket to. And finally the anti tip bars did not line up with my window track. While this video showed a nice install, be aware that your particular window and exterior wall design may require you to come up with some creative solutions.

@@MegaJap3 I used a 2x6 and a 3/4 inch 1x4 (both were as long as the window opening is wide) sandwiched together and laid them on top of the sill to create enough height so the bottom of the AC bracket could clear the storm window frame. First I screwed the 2x6 to the window sill. Then I screwed the 1x4 to the 2x6. In effect it’s creating a higher window sill. In the fall I will have to remove it so the window can be closed.

@@LogicDoesStuff Sorry I took so long to answer. This is a bit complicated. The unit says minimum window width is 22 inches and minimum height is 13.75 inches. I got to say this is probably the best one I've seen for installing these units.. Even better than the one that the company offers on KZbin.. The only difference is the most recent one that they made It shows that it has that sticky foam that you put on the bottom of your window that looks like you never got That you had to buy at the store. I just ordered mine It's 12,000 BTU should be here soon.. I also heard people getting old new stock from Amazon Hope that doesn't happen to me.. meaning you get a 2020 air conditioner instead of a 2022.. I met a lot of extra foam and stuff is not in the package..
