I have done the exact same thing…. Any suggestions for a split in the middle of the spindle …. The best I have come up with is… when it diagonal split …. Glue. Small hose clamp in middle of split Tiny screws near the ends of the split

I would have put some wood glue on the upper spindle too, since it was pulling away for extra strength.
