One thing accident analyses should teach us is that far too few "pilots" actually know how to *fly* an aircraft of any kind. All these two really knew was how to turn over control to a flight computer. Both of them taking their eyes off the instruments while ascending through a storm at night is insane.

The number of take-offs and landings is more important than the number of hours in the air, isn't it? It seems that the unusually bad weather wasn't a factor after all. How hard can it be to look at the artificial horizon? More importantly, how hard can it be to keep your hand on the controls until you've engaged the autopilot? When you're a licenced pilot, I mean.

"Okay, they didn't get clearance from the tower and they didn't do any scans. I don't think this can get worse." - Captain releases the flight controls for nearly a minute with autopilot disengaged. "Well, I'm eating my words." - The 737-800 banks right. Known issue when autopilot is disengaged. The pilots don't appear to notice the plane's changing altitude. First officer doesn't do a readback of the captain's command. "Jesus Christ... They're gonna overbank the plane and crash it while overbanked." - Plane goes to 115 degree angle, crashes while overbanked. *sigh* Those poor souls who fell victim to the gross ineptitude of these pilots... May those lost to these grave errors rest in peace.

There was late takeoff frustration. And the captain was trying to feel if he had the plane by moving the controls (erratically) since he believed he was on Autopilot, but he had just heard the Bank angle warning. Again. Someone who goes through all the training to be able to fly one of these should be able to be trusted more than this that they are not Luke Skywalker. Protocols are there to keep people alive! How long can you kill your customers before you don't have any? Again, if someone on the ground was monitoring the flight like, say the 'banking' warning sounded in the control room or something, the pilots might have been told, "Hey, did you know you're banking and your autopilot's not on?"

I think you all are missing something. I think this crew was either sleep deprecated, drunk, or drugged. The not getting takeoff clearance is the first key. Not verifying the autopilot on climb and just letting go of the yoke? They were disoriented but it's because their minds had been somehow effected. I doubt seriously if they found enough of them to do a proper autopsy.

Think about a third person in the cockpit trying to take over the plane with a gun in his hand. I researched this flight for my degree in aerospace medicine. The pilots were not adequately trained, ignored several ATC instructions - and they got their own call sign wrong!!! There was problematic hierarchy in the cockpit, as the captain felt superior and didn’t want to listen to the co-pilot! They had not received take off clearance but they still taxied to the runway and took off! A forensic team was sent from S Africa to help with the identification of the bodies using forensic dentistry. The crash site photos are horrifying - the plane had a full fuel load and burned despite the torrential rain!

I only have a private SEL license, never finished my instrument rating, haven’t flown in the last 30 years, and never flew anything bigger than a 172, but I’d bet a months wages I could do a better job than that crew. Why? I never had the opportunity to become dependent on an autopilot. Every hour I logged was hand flown. It’s clear that these guys forgot all the basics of flying an airplane because they assumed the autopilot would do it for them.

What they forgot was to look at the attitude indicator. When there is nothing to look at outside but black sky you need to monitor your instruments. @@luntbanzi1967 - It takes a lot of self discipline. You have to train your mind to ignore your senses and look at the instruments and believe what they are telling you. Some people think it has to do with having a big ego. Some individuals with big egos tend to trust themselves and their own senses more than they trust their instruments. That's probably what happened when JFK Jr. got into a death spiral in the dark over Long Island Sound. If he had just looked down at the attitude indicator and altimeter he could have regained situational awareness and leveled the wings and stabilized his altitude. Instead he probably figured he had it all under control until he hit the water.

I never fly on airlines of third world countries. Now, this sounds harsh, but think of it: countries troubled with corruption, poor living standards, where cutting corners sometimes is the only way to get by, etc: how can they be expected to develop safety standards to adequate measures and/ or train their personal properly? Sure, an airline still is an entity on its own that can operate above its country's standards, but would you bet your life on it? I wouldn't. And just to be clear: I absolutely love Kenya, its nature, its history, its people - has nothing to do with that.

@@jesseomollo9405 agreed. ppl are ppl and I do not make any differences in that. Please dont get me wrong, I am of course not valueing any kind of ppl above others, but having grown up in parts in Ex-Yugoslavia, I know how curroption can undermine the efficiency of standard procedures. As to numbers, I think it is natural that the first world shows much more, as the frequency of flights is just so much greater, too. I never looked into that in depth, tbh, so I wouldnt know. This is the problem with passenger planes nowadays if you ask me. The planes pretty much fly themselves so pilots think they can get away with being drunk/high on the job and when they actually needed to manually fly the plane they're shit out of luck because a lot of them rely on the automated systems so much. Teach pilots how to actually fly, not how to push some buttons and turn some dials so the plane flies itself. I'd honestly feel a whole lot safer in a plane with no autopilot whatsoever than one that relies on it almost 100% of the time.

There are around 100,000 commercial flights per day, most of which are carrying 50-300 passengers or more. Major incidents only happen once every few months (if that), and only a fraction of those are fatal. Yes, I will concede that pilot error and severe weather plays a large role in quite a few aviation incidents, but even then flying is unmatched in safety compared to driving or any other form of public or private transportation, especially in comparable conditions to what this flight experienced. OMG! What were they doing???!!!! 55 seconds???? How can you not feel the plane banking ???? Those poor passengers & flight attendants. This one was totally preventable!!! This why communication is important. Another great video !! I binge watch these like crazy even tho I’m scared of flying. But the time line & explanation of these crashes are the best.

Imagine the immense pain unnecessarily inflicted on friends, children and relatives of the passengers who lost their lives. I ho

Pretty damn stupid. It’s as though it was their first time flying an airplane. My ten year old Could have looked at the Instruments and figured it out.
