Common Farm Flowers

Күн бұрын

Georgie Newbery, flower farmer, florist, and founder of Common Farm Flowers spends an April day splitting and potting up dahlias and sowing seed - join her for lots of useful gardening tips and tricks x
I thought it would be a quick session with lots of time to include prepping for tomorrow's Living Easter Wreath demo - but as is often the case with gardening (for which I'm v grateful!) potting up dahlias and sowing seeds takes time, and in order to achieve objectives properly one must slow down and concentrate.
So I'm going to do another clip for the Living Easter Wreath prep.
THIS clip is all about splitting dahlias, sowing seeds, spacing, watering, protecting, counting, curating, nice coffee cups, toast and marmalade... and all the things I'm lucky to consider part of my job here on the flower farm at Common Farm between fashionable Bruton and up and coming Wincanton here in not terribly sunny today Somerset.
Yes, it's spring break, the kids are on holiday, I have a cricked neck, but the show must still go on so here we go, sowing seeds and potting dahlias and and and and and and. Enjoy!
If you want to join me for the Living Easter Wreath demo sign up here www.commonfarm...
Find out about all my workshops, including online workshops and demos, which you can join from around the world www.commonfarm...
You can buy me a coffee here www.buymeacoff...

I've just found you here in California (probably because The Google overheard me lamenting my mistakes at growing my first dahlias), and am so enjoying you - and your mum! Thank you for "keeping it real" and just a bit silly. Looking forward to catching up with your content.

Georgie I saw you on Escape to the Country last night. It was a 2019 broadcast. I watch that program often & wish I could buy one of the lovely homes. My Mom was born in Lincolnshire & met my Dad in London during the war. I often wish they had stayed in England instead of moving to Canada. I feel that in my next life I shall be an Englishwoman living in my stone & thatched cottage tending my garden........one can only dream...😌

I just found you! I have grown dahlias because my mom grew them and her mom grew them . We have always just planted straight into the ground in May ..after dividing the bulbs that survived the winter storage . Winter storage is always a variable thing of course but most survive thankfully . I am lucky to have a dry and not too cold basement where I store the bulbs in bins with lids and loose peat . I never knew how to correctly divide the bulbs so thanks for showing that !

lol - not sure I do it 'correctly' but it works for me. x these days I'm keener on taking cuttings and getting rid of the old tubers altogether - unless it's a cold spring like this one when the cuttings took forever to get going x

a wagon full of full watering cans would reduce the walking back and forth and be cheaper than installing a tap. Side note, I find escaping to my seed room very peaceful and I will be sad to see the room run its course this year in a month or so.

Hi Georgie you make flower growing look so easy. I just can't get dahlias to get past slugs and snails here so never get lovely blooms like you. How do you manage with that. I live fairly close to you on the Mendips so there should be very little difference in soil and climate. Best wishes Pauline
@theflowerfarmer
@theflowerfarmer 2 жыл бұрын
The awful thing is that the longer you garden organically the less slug damage you have because you have more predators - but you have to take the hit for a few years until the whole food chain we’ll established - good luck x
@paulinemalpas1749
@paulinemalpas1749 2 жыл бұрын
@@theflowerfarmer thanks georgie. I am completely organic already. Make comfrey tea and have 3 big compost bays 2 little ponds with frogspawn. Never use any pesticides but will keep trying in our fairly big wildish garden to get just a few dahlias growing soon but we are in our late 70s now so doing what we can. Love your KZbin videos.

@@paulinemalpas1749 it takes a while but eventually - we just saw a too quick to photograph young stoat skittering across the meadow - which is good because our lovely neighbour keeps chickens so there are rats and the stoat family will prey on the rats in the lane x

Hello again. Thanks for making me chuckle and all the good advice. Une petite question do you grow amaranth. As i am and i think i May have left them in there little pots and this May have stressed them. As only 7 cm tall and appear to have started forming flowers not sure if it is worth planting out or if they will be stunted. ? Bonne journée bisous 😀😀
