Fly Tying for Beginners Artificial Worm with Jim Misiura

One of the most effective baits for largemouth bass is the rubber worm. just because we are fly fisherman doesn't mean we can't take advantage of that. Rabbit strips make a great artificial worm with an added bonus of a more lifelike appearance.

Well Sean, Try tying a worm hook on your tippet and put a rubber worm on it. Then try and cast it, not just pitch it like the Bassmasters, but cast it like a fly should be cast. It isn't going to stay on that hook very long, I'd give it two maybe three casts tops. Then that hook is going to bore a big hole through the rubber and it won't be worth the nickel it cost you. The rabbit strip is much lighter, and will last until all the hair is gone, then it will still catch bass. Good Luck Jim

Hey Jim, I have never fished with a fly rod. I am handicapped and no one seems willing to teach me to cast. I have seen it done on KZbin but that is it. I am a fly tier only. I wish I could cast but I never seem to quite get it. So hence the lack of knowledge on the fly rod. I do fish a spincaster and I make some heavy flies with which to do so. I didn't mean to offend. The way to get good at is to leave the spinning rod at home then you'll be forced to learn to cast the fly rod. I just have three words for you. Practice practice practice!

Well Jim, this is the first fly that I think is more costly than a rubber worm. Why not just use a rubber worm? Don't get me wrong, I tie the most expensive flies going because I have invested in so many materials to tie many kinds of flies so that my flies cost me plenty. I just enjoy tying so I do it, just another hobby and it complements my fishing hobby as well, though I would put a worm on a spincaster and go for bass too. I am not solely a fly fishing guy because I am beginning, not good.

Could you use the thin guitar string for weed guard. ?

The weed guard helps the tail from getting wrapped around the hook.

No , you can weight it the way you want or no weight at all.
