History ASMR - Medicine from Prehistory to Our Time (Bedtime Story)

This ASMR/bedtime story video is about medicine and healing since the Neolithic. I tell you about Ancient Mesopotamia and the first diagnosis and prescriptions, Ancient Egypt and the figure of Imhotep, India and the principles of Ayurveda, or Chinese Medicine including Moxibustion and Acupuncture. We also take a look at medicine in Ancient Greece and Rome, including important figures like Hippocrates and Galen, how this legacy passed on and was further developped in the Islamic World, Byzantium or Medieval Europe. Then we reach the Renaissance and the steps that would lead to an increasingly scientific approach to medicine and the many discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries, that came with important social change and professionalisation (I tell you at the end about scientists like Pasteur or Koch, and Florence Nigthingale, the founder of modern nursing).

I thought this video... with is medical theme... would be a perfect time to tell my story. So I've been having these horrible migraines. They just triggered one day and didn't stop. I'm on some medications that are helping now. But before that, there was an 8 day period where my doctor was booked out... and I couldn't see her for about a week. I was in ALLOT of pain. The migraines were so frequent and so so painful. During those few days... I couldn't do much because I couldn't look at TV or phone screens... or any like that. By some luck.. I managed to find your channel. I was able to listen to you videos without it irritating the pain. After just a little while I realised that not only do you not irritate the pain... you seem to actually help sooth the pain. Like litteraly, no joke... it feels so relieving. This has been an extremely difficult time in my life. I was actually contemplating ending my life... because the pain was so bad. I was terrified in a way I've never been before. I couldn't do anything. Everything was hurting me... everything was a trigger... I actually couldn't even lay my head down and try sleep... because that was a trigger. And at times the pain was so bad... I actually think I started hallucinating. I really wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do here. You helped me at a time when not much else could. I can't express how greatful I am. Now when I get a migraine I always put your videos on. This video today makes me think about how lucky I really am because.... Imagine what this would have been like in a time before medicine? I'm very lucky!

My mum suffered with bad migraines which would sometimes send her to her dark bedroom and bed for days at a time. She had to have no light, no sounds or smells and a black hairband over her eyes. At the side of her bed would be a bucket in readiness for the vomiting to start. I've seen her when I was a teenager crying in pain and non stop puking. Sometimes my dad had to get her to emergency department where she was given an injection for pain and to stop vomiting I think. As time went by and she got into her forties and fifties the attacks lessened in severity and became less and less frequent. She's in her 70s now and she rarely gets any and it's a matter of a day in bed in the darkness and quiet. If I recall she was prescribed Sumatriptan (sorry if I misspelled this) for the onset of an attack and I think it's been 3-4 yrs since I recall her having a migraine. I'm so sorry you suffered such a devastating illness and I can't imagine how debilitating these migraines are. I hope you find peace and remember that people care.

I just took a Biological Anthropology class in the spring and I learned that primates *can* actually teach new behaviors and tool usage between generations. One example is a Japanese macaque who started to wash sweet potatoes before eating them and now the entire group she belonged to continues to do so, decades later. I don’t think this detracts from the points you were making at all, as it is only very simple behavior that is being taught. That said, it might be interesting for another video to explore what makes humans “human”. Is it tools (if other animals also use tools)? Is it language? Is it art? It’s a fascinating deep dive. Wonderful video, as always.

“Science is the organized skepticism against ‘expert’ opinion.” -Richard Feynman One of science’s goals is falsification, which basically means “that which cannot be torn down with reason and evidence, is either a bedrock facet of the universe, or we have not yet asked & answered the rights questions.” And in either case, more questions must always be asked, as every new perspective grants a new view to ask new questions. This is the sphere analogy, as the volume of knowledge changes, the surface area of questions increases.

Hey French! I love this video, as always, but I did want to correct one quick thing. While it is true that no other species passes down quite as much knowledge as humans, it isn’t true that no other species does so. Cetaceans (dolphins, whales etc) have been known to pass such knowledge of feeding spots and safe harbors to their children, and elephants have been known to pass down entire migration paths through generations by way of a matriarch. Its hard to remember sometimes that we are still quite new as a species, and while we can’t understand other animals communication, we can certainly see that it does exist. But yeah. Amazing video as always!!

What’s funny and kind of tragic is that two Ancient Greek philosophers-Leucippus and Democritus-challenged humorism and essentially hypothesized the atom. Obviously they didn’t have the same understanding of it and technology we have today. But Hippocrates, and later Aristotle, won-out with their earth, wind, fire, and water hypothesis simply because they were more influential. Their cults of personalities lasted through the medieval era and Renaissance to the point where the Catholic Church, without even realizing it, was just as mired in Aristotelian thought as it was in biblical text if not more so. A good example of this was Galileo finding evidence of Copernicus’ heliocentric model. He was a genuine catholic himself and actually found a way where certain biblical stories could function with a spherical Earth revolving around the Sun rather than a geocentric flat Earth model. His detractors were so stubborn and basically butthurt that it boiled down more to protecting their egos, reputations, and status within the Church that they threatened him with torture; meanwhile, all they were really doing was reciting and defending an Aristotelian model of the universe that predated the Bible. So naturally, they did what good religious folks do and threatened him with torture and made him publicly recant his “heresy.” I just wonder what types of medical and overall scientific advancements we’d have by now if the correct people had won out back in their day instead of hundreds or even thousands of years later. We’d probably have a cure for death by now 😔

I would say the root of modern medicine probably starts around 800 AD in the House of Wisdom established by the Abbasid Caliphate (which still stands today in Baghdad, Iraq).
