Thanks so much for another great video! QUESTION: When do you decide to use watercolor vs. gouache? Does your subject guide you? Is it your mood? Is it opacity vs. transparency? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 2 ай бұрын
It's opacity vs transparency mostly. If I know I want to layer up a lot or work on a toned surface I choose gouache. If I want flowy washes and glow I do watercolor. Mood too I guess:)

My first gouache was the same Holbein set. Then I bought Daniel smith. My Holbein dries out faster and is harder to rewet in the pallet and cracks. I like Daniel smith much better. I have not tried the others you have in this video. Thanks for the in depth work to do this comparison!

Yea! DaVinci. I like the painterly style for gouache more so than the flat poster style. I will replace my Arteza and W&N tubes, both tend to crumble when panned, with DaVinci as I run out. DaVinci still tried & true, 😍. Thank you always for you reviews.

Very fun, Lindsay! We have very similar opinions from experience: Holbein, Da Vinci & M. Graham are my big 3 gouache brands, and all are very intermixable. I do like working thinner than a lot of flat graphic style artists work at least to start, so that probably is the key as you said. I love that gouache is a medium that does allow for many different working styles.

Hullo Lindsay, I have been watching videos on the different gouache paints like a demon! I am truly disappointed in the reviews of DaVinci as I am one of their biggest fans of their watercolor paints! I have used Turners brand before and I just don’t want to use them for the negative associations I have for them. I have purchased a few tubes and they are 8 tubes of the Utrecht or “Blick’s” brand, the Holbein mixing set and the ShinHan are in my Amazon cart. I hope you are going to have a complementary(as in addition to) DaVinci gouache and showing the paintings you make is such a great tool for explaining your thoughts! Thank you for sharing all of your ideas and opinions on these paints.

@@thefrugalcrafter to be fair, I was trying to use them in a wet palette (one of those with the silicone seal). The Titanium White, Azo Yellow and Ivory Black molded. I hate the Windsor & Newton gouache with a purple passion. I made the mistake of trying to pan the set I got for Christmas and got tiny bricks. Could not rewet it at all. I even tried crushing it down to powder with mortar and pestle and boy was that a waste of energy. Resigned myself to paint from the tubes and could not layer without the paint cracking. Now, I’m a watercolor artist so I paint in very light layers. There really should not have been a problem. I’ve also used Holbein magenta and Shinhan (they have the BEST violet), both of which I really enjoyed. After your review, I’m thinking I want to try the Daniel Smith and DaVinci. I love both company’s watercolors so I’m expecting good things. Thanks for the review!

I bought 15ml set after I saw your video (22€ at Jackson's) Once again, a top recommendation from you. It is my favourite set right now. It made me rethink the collector mindset (I need that colour, and that one and that one) After this small set, it was clear that I only need good colours! I added a burnt sienna and I am completely set for less than €30. I wish DaVinci sold their paints in Europe. After seeing you use them, I am really inteigued by them. Holbein/WN are my go tos but I have three DS and one Schmincke in my collection ... The DS paint is easier to palette and Holbein/WN tend to be cheaper at my local Blick but otherwise I notice no difference. I also find given the way I use gouache, I don't need as many colors ... so I have my primaries (currently my go to is a Holbein Lemon Yellow, DS Perm Alizarin Crimson and WN Cobalt Blue) my white (Titanium or Zinc for mixing. Titanium for details) and Burnt Umber. My every day palettes are two Art Toolkit Folio Palettes ... one for watercolor and one for gouache. I was able to palette everything I had filling in layers and using small amounts of glycerin. I have mimimal cracking and everything stays put in their pans. Gouache is a new medium for me and I really love pairing it with watercolor.

Quite frankly I dont use gouache anymore these days. If I want my paint to look like a gouache I have but one tube of white. Mix that with watercolor and Im set. I just hate the cracking wich is the nature of Gouache, one worse than other, depending on the brand, but I only paint that way at home so I have me a tube of mixing white in my studio palette. My two main opaque conveniance colors that are semi opaque to opaque depending on layering, are senneliers warm grey and buff white and I use both. DS is more granulating than sennelier wich works awesome for wet beach shades. Warm grey I just adore for pottery and bleached cobblestone walls.

I love this review! So thorough and I like to learn others opinions on these things I also use. Winsor Newton is definitely a learning curve. I had a similar issue with the red but in my case, I figured out that it was because the red was super difficult to rinse completely out of the brush. But I like the colors of that set because they forced me to learn to mix and understand what colors would provide the best results. That said, I had a practically brand new green that completely dried in the tube (W&N replaced it when I reached out to them) and the red refuses to stay in place when you dry it in a palette. I have one tube of the Turner gouache and I love the color but I have one complaint and it's that it separates from the binder drastically. I have to knead the tube and try to stir it with a toothpick. I don't know if it's possibly the age of the gouache (having been bought open stock) but it is frustrating. I have tiny 5ml tubes of the Holbein and I haven't used them much. Because they are so small and weren't cheap, it makes me hesitate to use them. Which defeats the whole purpose. I had a giant tube of M. Graham white for mixing that also liked to separate. But I used it often and it performed well otherwise. I definitely need to get some of the other brands to try out.

Are M. Graham gouaches loaded with goopy honey? I’m disappointed that Daniel Smith made a primary mixing set using warm colors. What were they thinking? They are asking a premium price for a primary mixing set that isn’t really a primary mixing set. IMHO, always start with cool colors like cyan, magenta and yellow.
