1,89 per pencil? Thank you so much for mentioning this. See, the reason I was so desperately waiting for these to finally come to my country was because I wanted a good but inexpensive pencil for mixed media stuff. I thought that the Chromaflow would be considerably cheaper than artist grade pencils. But 1,89, that's only 20 cents cheaper than what I pay for a Colorsoft. So glad that I know this now, now I can stop worrying about these to come here and just stick with my Colorsofts and other brands that are easily available to me. And Colorsofts do happen to be one of my very favorite pencils.Their black kind of sucks, so I normally use a Faber Castell black instead, but otherwise I really love them. And ironically, one thing that I love about the Colorsofts is that they are actually not very soft. 😂

Thanks for all you do, I respect your opinions and love your videos. I personally only have the 6 set of skin tone colorsoft but do not like them, I find them scratchy and dusty. I have a 12 set of chromaflow and am impatiently waiting for the price to drop a bit. I wish they had gone to a full range of colors like their artist line has but I look forward to at least the 72 colors for now. I had 1 pencil break while sharpening my 12 set and wish they were thicker like the others but the smoothness and vibrant colors are just amazing.

That's odd. I find the coloursoft to be soft and smooth but I bought my sets years ago. I have had a few people remark that the coursofts are crumbly and I never experience that. I need to ask if they recently changed their formula. I used some at the trace show last month while I was teaching for Derwent and they seemed fine too. I wonder if there was a bad run of pencils.

I bought some double-ended pencil extenders that I can use even on full-length pencils and it makes a big difference for my arthritic hands. The extenders have one end for thinner pencils and a larger end to fit thicker pencils. Since they are double-ended, the openings allow even a full-length pencils to fit and slide the extender as close or far away from the pencil point as desired.

Hullo Lindsay! Sometimes you just crack me up! You often say well I think this “X” but you might find a different result! I like how you allow your viewers to enjoy your videos and opinions but do not discount theirs if it is different from your own! I have a cousin that has always disagreed with me about quality art supplies. She creates very beautiful artworks from the cheapest supplies, lovely crayon drawings with Crayola pencils. Now I believe that the Artist can use ANYTHING to create art, but how long it lasts is determined by the quality of your supplies! She has many faded or worn pictures that simply look not good, now she can scan newer artworks and print them out on good paper with ultrachrome inks and they are museum quality! The prints will outlast the original! I have even scanned a few of her older art and “revitalized” them and printed newer versions that look better than the original. Opinion is mine of course. Longevity is always a concern with artists if they care about their own artworks lasting more than their own lives. Maybe computers and scanning is one solution. What happens if files get corrupted? Operating Systems no longer access older files? I recently had a lady bring me CD’s she could no longer open! They were older Macintosh formatted disks and the program she saved the files in was ClarisWorks! Well if I had not had an older machine that still worked she would have been in a LOT of trouble. I let her come over and move everything to a new external hard drive with generic file types, If she would have had to pay for it? I believe I looked it up 4 or 5 years ago and Data recovery started at $300 an hour! Just goes to show you better know how to create and save your artwork no matter how you create it! Sorry I ran on and on again. I do hope that your family is safe and doing well.

Amazon just announced a 5% surcharge to sellers . That will most likely be passed on to their customers as many small businesses operate on a small profit margin. Also announced by Amazon - increases in their prices to cover increased fuel cost and higher inflation. It’s a coin toss as to whether prices on the Chromaflow and other items will go down. Thank you for the review. This looks like a wonderful set . Seems like the Chromaflow are a fabulous replacement for Prismacolor Premier. I have always had a love/hate relationship with my Prismacolor. Love the buttery soft cores and the wonderful color options. Definitely could live without the split barrels, shattered cores, etc. purchasing when on sale for about $70 for 150 set did make the problems more tolerable.

I bought these on your recommendatiom and can't wait to play with them. The set of 72 arrived today and while the pencils themselves look fine, tips are all intact and no cracks, the tin was dented very badly. Do you think if they have internal cracking I can try the same tips used for Prismacolor Premier pencils, like using a heating pad, laying in a sunny window, and most drastically microwaving? Or do you think I shouldn't take the risk and just return them? I've noticed, like you, that Amazon has been battering my pencils they ship to me. They're not even putting mine in bubble mailers, just those think plastic bags. I've ordered 3 full sets of different Derwent product lines in the past 2 months and each one arrived banged up. I've returned and somehow their replacements arrived safely even though still in the terrible packaging. Thank you for everything you do for us!
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
That's up to you. I'd try them and see how they are. If the dented tin bothers you you could contact Derwent with a photo and they will advise what to do. They my want to exchange it just ship a new tin. I'm sure they would like to know the state their pencils arrive in. Mine came via boat from Derwent PR for work and the pencils for shifted in the package but we're fine. Derwent stands behind their products so if they don't sharpen well they will replace them.

Excellent review, as always, Lindsay :) I have a few Coloursoft pencils, and I love their more unusual colors, but the only thing that keeps me from buying more is that mine break very easily. I'm curious to see how the Chromaflows turn out in that regard. I had an idea. Can clutch pencils / lead holders be used to hold the broken tips of colored pencils? My Prismacolor 3.0mm and Brutfuner 3.3mm break very frequently, so I got the idea to not waste the broken bits by using a clutch pencil to grip them. Potential probelm and solution: Would leaving a piece of graphite lead inside the clutch pencil prevent the waxy colored pencil from slipping inside the clutch pencil? After some research, I'm focuing on the Faber-Castell TK9400. I've read that the 4B-6B range comes in a 3.15mm size, which might fit. What do you think?

Question: Were your original ones the same exact barrel colors and numbers as the full set? Mine were not. My original set purchased just after they hit the US have no double zeros and the the metallic band is slightly darker on the original. Also five of my new pencils were not the same colors. My blue 13 was two shades lighter than my blue 1300, and four others were a shade off. I suppose they could have updated for the full release, it just caught me by surprise. They color exactly the same. Pretty sure my art store did not sell me knock offs. I was wondering if anyone else compared their old colors swatched next to their new. Still, very nice pencils, but a bit pricey.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
I think they added the 00 because they needed more numbers. When they first came out they had no plans to expand beyond the 24 but they had tons of requests for a larger line. Im not sure if they have changed the numbers over from the smaller set. The quality is the same from my experience.

I don’t want a firm dry pencil either and really want to try prismacolor. I am just worried about the breakage issues that everyone keeps talking about. Do you think that derwent colorsoft would be better than prismacolor? Or they are both similar to coloursoft so I shouldn’t bother. In my country’s price range I can either get the 72 colorsoft, the 72 lightfast (a bit more expensive) or the 150 prismacolor (the most expensive).

Honestly I wuld stick to the coloursoft as they are almost as soft as prismcolor but more sturdy and highter quality. I ordered the Jarlink electric pencil sharpener from Amazon you reviewed & I'm very pleased it says you can use the automatic sharpen feature OR you can sharpen for less time. But I'm a little concerned bc it says not to sharpen wax pencils. Most of the wax pencils are the self sharpening type anyway but there is no contact info to ask if soft color pencils sre ok. Do you have any idea? Ive heard it suggested to sharpen graphite pencils occasionally to help clear out the color pencil from the blade.

I think they mean China markers when they say wax pencils. I have been using my Jarlink for all my colored pencils except pastel.

I bought a set of the 24 set and immediately didn’t like them. I don’t even know whether I liked the performance I couldn’t get past how small they were. If felt like they’d cheaped out, made a child’s coloring pencil and were testing the waters to see if we’d buy it. Looks like we did since they’ve come out with the 72. Like when you go to buy a half gallon of milk only to find they’ve upped the price and are now selling it in 3/4 gallon containers. It’s being done to us to much, every time I go grocery shopping I’m seeing it. Then when I saw these pencils I was so disgusted I threw them in my closet and never looked much at them again. I did try them on paper a little. But I felt ripped off.

I'd give them another chance. They are great over marker in a limited supply art bag. I think they are expensive now for what they are but will drop once the demand dies down. I too wish they were thicker to support the soft core.

Well, they are not only difficult to sharpen to a nice point,but they break A LOT, poor quality wood, it’s not just me saying this, they break much more than Prismacolor, they don’t layer as well and they COST DOUBLE. ALSO they are not available open stock, I watched other reviews and checked for open stock on their website and Dick Blick, not available. Maybe in the UK where Prismacolor is more expensive,these would be a better choice,but the quality is definitely not as good all around.

They are open stock on the Derwent site and the price will be in line with prismacolor once they have been out a bit. If you are getting breakage I recommend contacting Derwent customer service for replacements.

@@thefrugalcrafter Available open stock in UK but not in US. And as I said I talked to other professional artists, they have excessive breakage issues. The price being just about double of Prismacolor,how can it get in line with them?

Tangle…. Is the verb… “Zentangle” is a copyrighted label for the process established by Zentangle, Inc. and is NOT a verb… Important to respect this difference.

That's just part of how our language evolves. Most of say Xerox instead of photocopier, Crock Pot instead of slow cooker, Band-Aid, Jacuzzi, Q-Tips, Tupperware, Chapstick, etc. You can't control how others use it.
