Cerulean is a Cobalt oxide (PB35 Cobalt Tin Oxide, PB36 Cobalt Chromium Oxide)... technically they aren't wrong haha The "Ultramarine Blue" is actually a translation error, the correct translation should have been Ultramarine Violet Bluish shade.

Your flower jar painting is so beautiful. My teacher chose Maimeri Blu for a class I took years ago, but they were the tubes, not the pans. The colors were so vibrant and pretty and have held up and not faded at all. I can't believe it's been over 18 years since I first tried watercolor and it took me this long to get back into it, lol. I just did a search for maimeri blu to see if they still existed, lol, and this video came up.

Agreed. As a set the color choices are odd. Then again, I love PV19 in all its dresses and love to dance with bright yellows and olive/sap greens. And Prussian AND ultramarine blues. I’m not sure why so many dull orange/brown shades. Meh. I like yellow ochre, but this is like mixing cad red with yellow ochre and hoping for another result.
@berolinastrassmann2 жыл бұрын
Green earth is also features by Sennelier. It creates interesting mixes with yellows, for subtle hues and some granulation. Indeed an odd choice for a 12 set, since it is quite subtle -and it is their only green. It would be great to paint rosemary or sage twigs, though. Thanks Lindsay for this review.

I recently bought ONE half pan of a turquoise color of Maimeri Blu from Jackson’s….just to give them a try. It’s totally beautiful, but I I can’t say, just by that one color, that their paints are any better than the other premium brands. And their prices are on the high side…even higher than some of the other premium brands. So I’d have to think long and hard about investing in, say a 12 color set at this time, even though I’m sure I’d love them. ❤️ (There’s a lot to love 💗 in watercolor brands these days and that’s not even including the fantastic handmade wcs , that I have built up a decent collection of and plan to buy more of.) And there are other brands ahead of Maimeri Blu for me: A. Gallo, M. Graham, Rembrandt and more Schmincke than I have now (Schmincke and to a lesser extent Holbein have become real favorites for me.),And I recently bought the 4 color Pacific Northwest tube set of M. Graham that I’m very I’m very impressed with so will likely add more of them. But as always thanks for your brief review of Maimeri Blu. With their new formulas, they may be the perfect choice for others. p.s., I love your artwork, along w/turquoise varieties, those soft pastels are some of my faves!

Thanks for sharing this. I agree this is a slightly unusual assortment of colors for a set. Lovely colors, but still needing a few add more for mixing. The flowers in the vase you did is proof of that.... very beautiful. And that Green Earth reminds me of Terre Verte (PG23, PG18, PB28) by Winsor & Newton. I have the tube version and it dried so hard on my palette that I rarely ever used it for years. Then I tried adding just a tiny bit of honey to the paint before letting it dry on my palette (along with a few other hard to re-wet colors I had) and that did the trick. Now I find it's a lovely granulating color I mostly use for foliage either in mixes or alone.
@starr-starr2 жыл бұрын
Such an unusual set of colors for a palette! I’ve resisted trying that brand, (good grief, how?), but that looks like a FOME palette, and that’s half the deal! I’ve read that Green Earth was used as undertones in portrait painting (mainly in oils) and yes, it is famously difficult to rewet in watercolor. It’s that weak, even if you get a lot of paint straight from a tube. I think the poppy painting looks great. Hope you and the family are getting better each day.

Thanks Lindsay for doing this! This is one brand I haven't tried yet (and by now that's saying a lot, lol!) I wonder if the earth tones would be even more densely pigmented in tube form used fresh which I have been doing more of in my practice where I find necessary, but Maimeri cadmiums in particular have a punch that I haven't really seen anywhere else--I don't have a Cad Yellow Deep but that one is unique enough to fill a gap for my personal collection. I love the warmth of the orange, but you demonstrated how the yellow with red matches it (and MG CRL is similar enough to work). Also re: the earth pigments including PG23, I've seen oil painters use some of these colors from Maimeri and they appear to have a much denser pigment load--I wonder if certain pigments just bind better in oil than gum arabic and/or the milling they use is just more effective in their oils.

It is an odd palette. However it's a very high value palette. So many genuine cads and cobalts.. all of which have a very high price tag. Also genuine earths which are getting harder and harder to find, everyone seems to be going to synthetics or mixes. Green earth is a very traditional mineral pigment and it's doing exactly what it's supposed to. Maimeri is known for their single pigments, correct pigments (if you look at the actual label the ultramarine violet is correct someone just goofed on the English, and they offer four different cobalt blues including the typical PB28), and transparency... which makes this palette even more of an outlier for what their line entails as a whole. I find this brand very similar to Isaro in use... transparent, soft, traditional. Additionally I don't know what paper you use for swatches but it's awful, I notice it does paint no favors regardless of quality. Everything looks chalky and streaky.The difference between the swatches on it and on the enclosed Arches are night and day.

Lindsay, These used to be my favorite brand of paint. I used these in tubes because Sterling Edwards suggested them and it was great.........I waited months for the 36 pc. pan set to arrive from Jackson's last year. The poor choice of content stunned me. There were 4 blues that looked almost identical, and things went down from there. I contacted Jackson's and after initially responding to me and requesting visual information as well as written, they never responded to me again. I'm selling mine but letting the buyer know that I didn't like the set at all.

PG 23 is just a tricky pigment all around. I have the Winsor and Newton version, Terre Verte Yellow Shade and it's a similar very pale, low saturation sort of color. Kinda like potters pink in many ways.
@Renilou22 жыл бұрын
Terre verte PG23 is a very lightfast, semitransparent, lightly staining, moderately light valued pigment. It’s a very old time pigment called Terre Verte that’s totally natural and was often used as an underpainting for portraits in oils. It’s not rare. Mine is in Winser & Newton and yes it’s hard to rewet.
@sandjune2753 Жыл бұрын
the colours are very vibrant, but you do need to use 100% cotton paper like most paints, I find these very bright, they only go dull on cheap paper. If you use 100% Cotton also the paint dries much quicker rather than sitting on top of the paper for ages.

Thank you, Lindsay - I love seeing demos and hearing your thoughts on the different brands! ❤️ I had wondered about that brand as I had seen a European watercolour artist using them (different palette of pigments tho if I recall correctly) on a landscape and the painting turned out gorgeous. Your set's pigments are really quite earthtone based from my perspective and I adore that difficult green!! (Sorry, I can't remember its name or number anymore! 🤦🏼♀️🙃😂) But, it reminds me of Fabre Castell's Polychromos Earth Green in a way, which I love and use in almost every CP painting!
@rk34762 жыл бұрын
I hope your recovery continues well. I have 2 PG 23 versions in one of those odd Paul Rubens tube sets (odd color/pigment selections). One is that pale, sage color like yours (western Kenya Green Earth) and the other (umber green earth) is more similar to the khaki-olive color of another one you showed. They aren’t difficult to reactivate, but the texture is a little syrupy like some Cotman/Miya pans… maybe an additive to improve rewetting? I looked at them when following your DIY granulating palette recommendations. I thought that pale green would be pretty in color separating mixture, but it seemed like whatever made that weird texture kept the pigment from settling out in a textured way.
@thefrugalcrafter2 жыл бұрын
I notice that syrup texture in a few mineral based hard to wet paints. I think it's the extra gum arabic and humectant needed for adhesive and solubility.
@jennw68092 жыл бұрын
I wasn't at all interested in this brand until I read that their entire line is single pigment! True PG 23 is supposed to be low-tinting -- it's a favorite of portrait painters to tone down skin tones without getting too much green in the mix. It is an odd choice. I wonder if this was supposed to be a portrait set? It's mostly warm and earth tones but doesn't seem designed for landscape.

I knew the pigment sounded familiar. Found it. I have the schmincke version. PG23 Green Earth. I have it. Bc Im a botanical nut I have way to many greens. But Its not my kind I would use often. Maybe for highlight for reeds or as a sparkle in greens but I find it meh. I rather mix mine with a sapgreen and raw sienna to tone down the green a bit without it gowing brown green. I have the pan version of it. I found it to be hard to release a decent colorload from. Would not be my pick to advise for a beginner or intermediate for that matter.
@AafkeVultink2 жыл бұрын
If its an artist grade paint I dont look much at single pigment or lightfast. I am previleged to have multiple pallets, ds, schmincke, sennelier and white nights. The latter I prefer for practise pieces bc I know white nighs so well, I will order extra pans of that given current war I dont know how long it will be available. I do look for single pigments more if it is a student grade paint.

Just from memory, I think the White Nights green earth might be comparable to the Maimeri one - but I do remember it being a bit stronger. I haven't touched my paints in months though, so I might be misremembering :P As far as sets go, this is definitely not for me. I'm all for "weird" sets that don't just use the same standard colours all the time, but I do want a magenta and a cooler/more neutral yellow. Ideally I'd have a cyan, magenta, and neutralish yellow in every set, and then I'm happy to go crazy with the rest. But, on the other hand, they're easy enough to add... But this set has way too much red-orange-yellow for me regardless.

Maimeri blu is one of my favorite brands. They are highly rewettable and lovely to use. Their new line is almost all single pigment, which is great for those of us who enjoy mixing. They layer very nicely, so nice for botanicals. Interestingly you compared them to winsor & newton which i find hard as a rock on the palette. I will admit, i've only used the tubes, maybe the pans are different. ?? is this the artist level or student level ?

I saw another review of this same set and when unboxing, the pans had a lot of paper stuck to the pan. The pans are smaller than the rails and they rattle, unless pushing the rail guards inwards to lock them in place. Hullo Lindsay! Thank you for sharing your opinions on these new paints from Maimeri Blu. It has been 25 years since I used this brand. I did like them but they were a handmade paint but very reasonable at that time. I gave the tubes away when I stopped painting traditionally and cut back on supplies. I have found A.Gallo Paints for a handmade Italian paint and I believe that you would be hard pressed to find another more beautiful selection of paints for a very reasonable price! Some people believe their handmade paints are made of precious everything and they are so overpriced, and I am not a handmade zealot nor a fan of many that I have used in my paintings over the years. I just enjoy consistency in my watercolor paints these days! I would love to have you create with the A.Gallo paints! They will not replace my DaVinci paints, but they are very unique and a very beautiful line of paints.
