I loved this painting!! I feel for you, although it's been 20+ years since I became an empty nester, I can remember how hard it was to adjust to no kids in the home everyday! I had to keep especially busy to cope. But I was so fortunate to have really young grandchildren that helped keep me busy and I babysat often. They have always been such a blessing. Wishing you and your family all the best as you transition into this new stage of life. The new freedoms can be liberating but you (at least for me) never stop missing at times those full and busy days of a home filled with children.

Great painting as always! I can identify with you wanting to savour the snapshot capturing the moment in time due to the anticipation of your children flying the nest. When my four left home it was a very bitter sweet feeling, a double edged sword. After years of running around after them to suddenly stopping and deafening silence was a very weird feeling. I would wake up thinking oh I need to do this, that or the other today for them and then reality would kick in that they weren’t there anymore so I I would get all teary eyed. Adapting was hard at first - however, once you have adapted and they come visit you like they never left for a few hours or so, it’s a good feeling all round and celebrations like Christmas become magical once again. 🙂

These are my favourite sneakers, I wore them for years! When you showed this painting on sat chat I was wondering about the size, they didn't seem like a teenager's. I understand the nostalgia. Even with a 6 and 9 yo I sometimes wish they would stay small a bit longer 😊 I like the layering of the carpet, it turned out really well.

While in my limited time in a college course for kids who didn't get into any college art programs, one of my teachers tought me a trick for blending that wokrs especially well for skin tones. He used only white gouache with watercolours and it made the most stunning gradients from a colour to "nothing." I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I am pretty sure it was decently straight forward, I just don't have any gouache so I can't try it out at all. So what do I do when I want to jog my memory on how to do something like this? I look up tutorials on KZbin! But there weren't any! I was wondering if you could play around withixing your watercolour and gouache and see what you come up with in regards to techniques? I will describe what I remember in case it helps: 1. paint a thick line of the white gouache wherever you want the shines or clear bits, or just plain ole' highlights to be. 2. paint the opposite sides of the piece with pure watercolour pugment. You then use water tonbring the two slowly together. 3. Use your brush to push and pull the colour and light untill you have something you like. I hope this helps get the idea across. If you decide to try this, THANK YOU SOUCH!❤

Watching you paint this was a great lesson for me just when I needed it. Halfway through, at the hot mess stage I would have given up. I would have thought I'd ruined it or I couldn't pull it together. But you did! You readjusted your perspective and fixed proportion issues along the way and it turned out really lovely. I need to remember, especially with gouache, to push through the doubt. Sometimes it'll still be a fail but sometimes it'll be a win. Thanks Lindsay. I've lost my inspo the past few months and today I feel like digging in and creating.

Hello Lindsay, loved your picture and I can whole heartedly understand what you are feeling about your Daughter going off to college. When my Son (only child) went off to University, I was devastated. Even though I was so proud of him going off to University, I was also extremely upset that I would be alone and have no-one to take care of. Every time he came home to visit and then left to go back to Uni all those initial feelings would come back. I got used to him leaving probably in his final year but still upsetting for me with him being my only child and with me being a single parent. I hope you deal with it better than I did. I also hope you are ok with you having Covid-19 and the rest of your family are doing ok and getting over having it too. Wishing you all the best, take care Lindsay, kindest regards Helen, UK

It happened so suddenly that I wasn’t prepared, though I doubt I could have been. Having stayed home with my kids and homeschooled them, I think I’ve taking this harder than I should. I’m not having the retirement I would have liked to because of health issues. I now feel very much alone. I try to paint, but lately I just can’t get my head into it. Hopefully, something will get better. Enjoy you kids while you can!

I love Converse still, have walking issues and so that’s my excuse! These are so pretty and look so tangible in your painting. I love gouache too. Back in the day when I learned there were two grades I could get in the U.K., Designers and Artists. The latter was very lightfast. This is because while principally a graphic medium for unacknowledged commercial artists there were a number of quite famous fine artists who made work with gouache. I understand it is quite hard to conserve because even after many decades the paint is still resettable. I still have palettes with dried gouache that is in fine workable condition after 40 years, with the exception of one highly pigmented magenta that has a tendency to become hairy! I think you will enjoy this painting for decades to come. It is odd how little things like this can evoke time and place and memory so completely, isn’t it.

Simply lovely! I believe that this kind of subject matter is what daily art should be for so many of those budding artists to tackle! Creating that one “masterpiece” is not a realistic idea! I love going back and referencing Vincent VanGoth! He painted everyday objects and scenery he saw out his room’s window. He even painted himself when he needed a human subject! Great Art is only discovered over time, you cannot “make it” as some pre-ordained ideal! Thank you for sharing your wonderful kids sneakers with us! I believe that it has that unique potential to become more than just a picture, but a truly iconic image of our present age! Truly inspirational Lindsay, Thank you.

I ❤️ this so much. Our son (22) is still living with us, working and stockpiling money, but he's started making a lot of noise about getting a place with a coworker. While I'm glad he'll be starting life as an adult (he pays us a nominal rent plus his insurance and whatnot, but it's not the same as being on his own), I'm starting to get really sentimental about him leaving. Although I'm probably going to take over his room as a craft room, it's bigger than the third bedroom I'm using so silver lining 🤣. Anyway, this is great. I also think gouache might be my paint medium. Watercolor is ok, but it's hard for me to get the intense colors I like. Pencil is good but slow. I like alcohol markers but doesn't give me the texture I like in most things I do. Acrylics and oils are way outside my skill level, plus I'm a crafter / mixed media person, I don't do paintings per se. Thanks for the sentiments and the art!

I don't like acrylic paint except for craft projects too! Not only does acrylic dry the minute it hits the surface, the clean up is horrid. I find if I have a need for acrylic paint in a project, I reach for paint pens. BUT, I did buy that Himi gouache 2 years ago when you recommended it. I've never opened it! It's so bittersweet because you're so proud of their achievements but at the same time, want to stop them growing. Hubs and I (jokingly of course) have many times threatened our 12 year old qith grounding if he doesn't stop growing. He thinks it's hilarious ^-^. The painting is gorgeous. I personally believe you should never have to explain why you are painting what you are. You found the subject beaitiful for one reason or another, and it's really not anyone's business but your own what that reason was. ♡

What a beautiful piece of art! Thanks for the tip with the watercolour paper. I have two expensive watercolour blocks that went bad with the sizing this summer. I am in Australia and usually it is dry and hot in summer and the paper handled that well. This summer it was very wet and I don't have aircon in my studio. I was so shocked that I 'lost' a Saunders Waterford and a Millford block. Does it make sense to store the paper in closed plastic containers and add these small bags which are absorbing the moisture?

How do you tell if sizing in WC paper has gone bad? I have tons of WC paper that I’ve had for years, good quality Arches. I’ve also had the cheaper WC paper from Michaels, and with that, I notice the paint goes on spotty, instead of smooth, is that bad sizing? Also I’ve heard other WC artists recommend soaking WC paper before use to remove the sizing. What are your thoughts on this.?

Spotty paint us a sign of bad sizing. I have soaked paper in cold water to stretch it but you don't want to remove the sizing. It might remove some and soften the paper and I think that's what some artists mean.

I commented wrong. Try again: I thought your painting was a photo of real shoes that you painted fabric paint to make them turquoise & gold. (Like the tenny shoes were white & you used gauche & painted the tenny shoes) My brain said I guess you can paint gauche on fabric, makes sense, canvas is fabric. That is how real your painting looks. So, I was expecting a video on how to paint on Tennis shoes, using gauche paint. Great job.

I’ll still never use gouache. I have watercolors for transparent, cheap watercolors for semi-opaque, and acrylic for opaque. I really don’t need a water-soluble/reworkable medium that’s opaque. I mean, add cheap “white” tube watercolor (aka filler central) to cheap watercolors and it’s gouache isn’t it.
