I feel this song isn't about someone else, its about her missing herself. Missing herself without medication, how she felt emotions. With many medicines all emotions are effected and just seem so much more dull. The more vibrant intense version of her is the part of her wanting to come back, its the true her. While the the other is her medical haze, just watch the difference is singing. Hazy Gabbie is very foggy and soft while the intense her is strong and full of emotion.

When I first heard your song, in my head I imagined you sitting in a similar place but a therapist was sitting across from you. Then once I saw no one there and transferring to Healthy Gabbie talking to Sick Gabbie, it had me thinking. You were your own therapist trying to figure out "Do I really need medicine or am I just sad?" Wondering if theres a permanent way to feel okay or if its only temporary before you spiral down again. Then turning your tragedies into a work of art is taking all of the pain you endured and turning them into masterpieces like you exactly did with this song. I've never theorized this heavily before and Idk if on the right track or not but I love figuring out your symbolism! You really are incredible Gabbie and your voice speaks extreme volumes! Also, I think your music videos give your songs even more depth, which I don’t think happens a lot on pop music, usually pop music videos detract or confuse the meaning behind a song. At the end with the addition of the other part of you took the meaning away from a kind of love song broken heart to a “personal” broken heart. With depression and anxiety it can feel like there are two versions of yourself and that makes you feel broken and honestly does break your heart. Totally gave me a different meaning to this song!

Okay here’s my theory: Each of the previous six songs are part of Gabbie’s life and are represented by the chairs. Out loud was when she lost someone important. Satellite was when she felt isolated by that loss. Honestly was when she met someone else but soon saw their dark side. Monster was her reflection of her life thus far and how she keeps losing people and she starts to blame herself. After everything that happened in monster, she goes to therapy where she has to decide if she wants to “medicate”. We see Gabbie from monster, which haunts her as she sits in what looks like a support group in therapy and reminds her of how she pushes people away. Essentially, this is the aftermath of her previous songs. Gabbie has also said she didn’t love satellite (despite it still being amazing) and that’s why there’s less representation than the other songs.

For so long I have been unknowingly forcing myself though panic attacks because the art that I would produce afterwards would be some of my best and most emotional prices (I draw and write poetry). When she says “I’m unwell thanks for asking” to an empty room it hits me hard because it shows that no one actually asks because mental health is still an uncomfortable topic for people to talk about so no matter how much you struggle you have to hide it which ultimately just makes everything so much worse and confusing.

[Post-Chorus] Whoa, whoa Oh, medicate it away Whoa, whoa Oh, medicate it away [Bridge] They say give yourself a break They told me to medicate I don’t want to medicate [Chorus] Oh, can you medicate a broken heart? Make your tragedies a work of art Medicate a broken heart Build your walls up just to rip them apart Is this the way to fix this or is this a quick fix? I really couldn’t say Can you medicate, medicate, medicate it away? I can genuinely say this is by far the best song you've made. It's different from the rest, calmer, a sadness so deep, it takes shelter in your bones. I love seeing this softer side to your emotions. And the video concept, so simple. Similar to the end of Diss Track part 2. No chairs were injured in the process. Keep up the amazing work 💙💜

This song didnt touch me personally at first. Yes, I love the message, and yes, I can completely understand the emotions behind it, but I've almost always known I need to medicate due to.... suicidal thoughts. But I showed this to my mom and she opened up to me about a lot of things I'd never really known. She had been on antidepressants ever since my little sister was born due to postpartum depression. A year later, my dad passed away due to cancer. Any time she went in to her doctor, he prescribed her more and more and more, and she said she never really felt like she was allowed to grieve in that time. She eventually went off them but it was a good while later. Your song touched my mom in a very deep way and made her feel a little less alone, at least for a little while, and for that I cant thank you enough gabbie.

(Gabbie, please give your thoughts on this theory) Gabbie's sweatshirt has the same stripe pattern as in the flashbacks of Out Loud, only the colors are faded and worn. You can also see that the warehouse she's sitting in is the same place as the ending of Out Loud when the two kiss and walk away. This song takes place AFTER Out Loud; that song was about losing someone, this depicts the pain you feel long after losing someone. She's sitting alone in the warehouse with the same stripes on, reliving their times together. Only he's gone, and she's hurting. It was a long time ago (hence the fade on the stripes) but pain doesn't always heal with time. EDIT: k but why did Gabbie heart almost ever comment under mine but just upright ignore me? so a recurring theme in all of the 2-way mirror music videos is the black chair. I am not the first person to realize this but the black chair almost always represents HIM. In Honestly, Gabbie kicked away the chair to show she was done with him. In A Perfect Day she is clinging to the chair, she doesn't want to give HIM up but she knows it's a toxic relationship, and in the end, she throws the chair, finally leaving HIM. In Medicate, she is surrounded by the chairs, a support group without support, but also surrounded by HIM. She can't escape these thoughts and turns to anti-depressants to try to help her. (I am probably looking too into this and I would like to credit everyone who thought of these things before me, though I can't name specific people)

Maybe the yellow chair in butterflies represents the hope she had for the relationship and the black chair represents how that hope just died. Perfect Day- She starts realizing the lying of HIM but the chair isn't completely out of the picture by the end it's still ever so slightly in the picture which represents her forgiving and going back to him after he pleads for forgiveness Honestly- Fed up with all of his lies she kicks the chair out of her life thus representing ending the relationship which starts the chapter of her sinking into depression because she is still doubting herself and whether or not she is the problem Monster- the chair is now gone but her mental health is now deteriorating and she is wondering and beginning to become convinced that she is the problem as to why people leave her Medicate- The chair is everyone she has lost or just the ghost of her ex and how he still affects her and she has to deal with everything he put her through and other problems by herself so she tries to fix the problems he created with medication

I love the imagery and I think you could be right, LivTheTiger. Before "Butterflies" and "Perfect Day" were released, I always thought of this as a conversation with herself. Like the medications and depression are numbing herself so much that she can't feel her true self anymore. When the second Gabbie comes into the picture (her real self), it's like she's reaching out, trying to reconnect with who she really is, not the Gabbie that is spiraling (being cheated on plus all of her other mental health struggles). Gabbie has always been open about her struggles with depression and anxiety and I think "Medicate" touches me because I also struggle with mental health issues. I would love for Gabbie to make a video explaining the imagery and meaning behind the songs and videos on her album!

I really love the continuous theme/personal narrative she is creating within her music videos. Both the music videos for Honestly and Medicate are in the same room, with the same chairs, as if they are both representing Gabbie’s mind/mental and emotional dialogue, but each music video is embodying a different stage of grief, anxiety, and/or loss. Honestly is describing the first stage of this grief, with anger and passion, while Medicate is portraying a stage of defeat and hopelessness, as anxiety and depression that she now feel because of the hurt and the loss she has experienced is so excruciating difficult to deal with in one’s own strength. Nevertheless, it is so awesome that Gabbie is artfully telling her stories as well as bringing awareness to mental illness in such a powerful, beautiful way. As a musician and songwriter myself, it really is amazing getting to witness someone share their voice through their music, so thank you Gabbie! 😊
