Today we have one of the most special videos I have made and archived on the channel. Today we archive the game P.T. which stands for Playable Teaser and was released as a demo to tease the upcoming game of Silent Hills. It would be a collaboration project between legendary creator Hideo Kojima, director Guillermo del Toro and starring actor Norman Reedus. But because of a fall out between Hideo Kojima and Konami the game was cancelled and never came out. The company pulled the demo from the online store and no one was ever able to download the P.T. demo again. The ONLY way you were still able to play it, is if you owned a PlayStation 4 that still had the demo on it and did not have a firmware update.
Now I did not own a PlayStation 4 back when this came out and so I never got a chance to play it myself. Owners of these consoles sometimes sell them for really, really high prices on various sites, but luckily I found someone who was willing to sell their PlayStation 4 with the P.T. demo for a really good price. And so I bought a secondhand PlayStation 4 JUST so that I could record and archive this legendary and forgotten game.
It's times like these where it really justifies the work I do here on the channel. Where I archive and preserve footage of games that are no longer available. For generations to come who will never have the chance to experience this, but can look back at the footage to get an idea of what the game was like. The game itself was pulled off the store almost 10 years ago so it becomes more rare each year to be able to play it. I will therefore treasure this console and hopefully be able to showcase it more as the years move along.
There is actually a fan remake available on PC and though the game looks quite similar, it differs quite a bit. Various puzzles are impossible to do in this remake. For one puzzle you needed to connect a microphone to your PS4 (which I did) and this could not be replicated in the PC remake. Instead in that remake you will have to type some words in order to progress. The PC version is also quite glitchy and subtle differences like different lighting and behavior of the insects give it away that this is not the original one. Maybe I will look at that remake and archive that too someday, but for this experience and archive I wanted to make sure I had the original one.
P.T. as a game itself is quite short, but its influence on the horror genre in videogames cannot be overstated. This basically invented the hallway horror game genre where you go through narrow hallways in loops. Every loop something different will occur and even the look, feel and type of jump scares have been copied by other developers and creators. Games like Layers of Fear, Visage, The Beast Inside, Home Sweet Home and many others would not have existed or played like they did if it were not for P.T. Even big budget games like Resident Evil 7 and Village take inspiration from P.T. and it is truly amazing how much this game changed the horror genre as a whole with just a small demo.
It is therefore very heartbreaking that we never will get to see a Silent Hill game made by the mad genius that is Hideo Kojima. But unfortunately not in this universe. In this universe all that we have is the P.T. demo and it is my absolute honor and privilege to be able to share this game with all of you so that it will not be lost to time. Please sit back and enjoy!
