Half-Life Alyx NO VR MOD | Full Game Walkthrough | No Commentary

Back in 2020 I rented a VR headset to experience the game Half-Life Alyx. I am a big Half-Life 2 fan and was blown away by the VR experience. In 2023 I hope to finally buy a VR headset so that I can start archiving VR games as well, but until that happens I am not able to play any VR-only titles. But luckily a very talented mod team has made it possible to experience Half-Life Alyx entirely from start to finish WITHOUT a VR headset.
So all the people who do not have one can finally see and experience the story of Alyx in this amazing game. Now granted, without the VR experience the game is a bit more of a standard FPS game, but for fans of Half Life it feels great to be in that world and setting again. The game still looks gorgeous and there are many memorable moments like your first encounter with a headcrab or the entire chapter revolving around Jeff. When I do get the VR headset I want to archive this game once more, but until that time arrives I am glad to have been able to experience and archive Half-Life Alyx once more.

This is honestly a great way to play and there should be no shaming of people who can only play a "traditional" style game. I mean HL1 and HL2 are "traditional" style and they are amazing! Those "games" in VR Alyx, like a new-gen style minigame because Valve didn't bother to make real puzzles like prior games, are so long and boring. And HL1 and HL2 never insulted their players with these type of "games" and "gimmicks" like manually reloading your gun. Now, if there are VR fans it is nice for them but only if that is optional and the traditonal method can still be played. Valve shouldn't be forcing HL fans to be playing in VR only and the maker(s) of this mod are truly wonderful. VR is not for everyone and can trigger motion sickness. I'm not even talking about the price tag of VR. Many people can afford a VR set but that is going to do nothing to solve their tendency, which can be genetic/hereditary, for motion sickness. I couldn't watch any VR gameplay of HL: Alyx for years until 2023 because it kept making me dizzy and feeling like I'm about to vomit. So happy this is now available. I can properly view subtitles too without shaky camera and most KZbinrs who played VR HL: Alyx don't bother to look down to show the subtitles in their videos.

As someone who’s played through the vr version on valve index as well as this non-vr mod, while the non-vr version is A LOT less fun, it still manages to capture most of the main essence of the game. The only big problem for me was the combat, since it was designed for vr. On the index, combat is incredibly fun, especially ducking behind cover IRL. But on flatscreen I found most fights to be boring. It’s still a good way to play for people that can’t afford VR, but if you can, you should just play it in VR.

It is really nice to no longer have to watch motion sickness-inducing shaky camera and boring/long "minigames" like holding a stick and twisting it to open doors because Valve didn't want to make real OG HL puzzles involving physics. And we see everything that the player sees on screen here. KZbinrs who upload VR only capture about half of what they are seeing in their recorded KZbin walkthrough videos and it is so annoying. They have to look way down to the floor to show the subtitles for example.

@@nogoodnameleft Half Life Alyx had plenty of traditional physics puzzles, what are you talking about? To get the shotgun, you had to turn the winch enough to lift the corpse out of the hole, and then grab the pipe that was jamming it earlier to jam it again in order to reach it. There's the puzzle in the hotel where you used two energy cells to open a door to let you get to the second floor. But then there's a door on the second floor that also needed to be powered by two cells. Looking at the color of the wires coming from it, you noticed one of the power cells from before is now also powering the door you need to open now. The other cell is not. Exploring the floor you discover there's a hole in the floor/ceiling above the power cell you need allowing you to use the Russels to pull it from afar, to unlock the door without being locked out by the initial door. Or the puzzle where you needed to turn a crank to open a door, but the Jeff monster will kill you when he hears you, so you have to take a bottle, toss it into the freezer to cause him to investigate. At that point you not only close the door behind him, but be sure to grab the latch and pull it down to lock him in. Or even just the puzzle where the fall to the bottom of an open elevator shaft is too long to survive, so you have to grab the barrels in the room over and carefully drop them down so they stack so you can jump onto them. I'm happy people can play this game in the traditional style with this mod, but it's bullshit to criticize Valve for creating an excellent VR title and pushing the technology and mechanics forward.

They probably knew it would be the first VR game everybody would play from then on so they tried to make sure beginners would get too motion sick which had to come at a cost of good physics shenanigans

Its absolutely insane how different it is in VR. Its nearly photorealistic- you really feel like you're there. When that strider popped up I was in absolute terror, and I could only hold my breath and scramble to hide for a solid 5 seconds. I cant wait to play this game.

Update: it was beautiful, immersive, and amazing. The ending was breathtaking, and it made me feel so important, like I was actually a part of something bigger than myself. Oh, how can someone return to a normal life after an adventure like that?

Even as a 2D game, the visuals are great, but not worth a $60.00 US price as a non VR game. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a VR shill, but I'm waiting for a sale before I jump into this great mod. Hopefully the devs eventually decide to add hand(s) and/or arms. The disembodied weapons seem a bit disconcerting.

Chell, wheatley and everybody else from portal where in aperture science, even before hl1. In the ending of portal 2 we see that a lot of time may have passed between hl2 and portal 2. Anyway, I don't think Chell has any kind of combat experience. If anything, she'd hand the portal gun to the resistance (even then, it would be unlikely since Eli doesn't trust anything related aperture).

This is much better for people watching on a regular TV or computer screen. VR walkthrough only really works if you are used to shaky camera motion sickness-inducing and don't get hurt by it or if you have a VR style headset that can experience it in a similar VR style. And real Half-Life is supposed to be played like this. Was pathetic how Valve refused to release a traditional version. It is not the mod's fault that it "plays too slow and too easily". Valve could have easily made a challenging and traditional style HL: Alyx game with a lot more challenging gameplay. Thank you to whomever made this mod for people who just want a regular non-shaky camera version. It really doesn't matter to us HL franchise fans if the gun is reloaded like real Half-Life style or that "cheap gimmicky" manual style with VR.

Obviously it's just a fan work, but at least it makes the game tolerable. I don't know why people think it's good for a game to require a specific peripheral to even be able to play it. It would be like a racing game that can only be played with a racing wheel. One thing is "it's better to play with this", and another is "you literally cannot play without this", which should be harshly criticized.

​@@97Crazysteve Whether it's a good VR or not makes no difference whatsoever. It's still unacceptable to force you to buy a peripheral when you already have the rest of the hardware. That's why I made the racing wheel analogy. It's perfectly acceptable to make a game in a way that having certain peripherals (that don't come with the hardware by default) brings the experience to a new level, but it's unacceptable that you can't even try it without those certain peripherals.

It is a pure masterpiece, creating the game for flat screen then porting it to VR would of done the game a huge disservice. Not to mention valve has always been about pushing the boundary, not necessarily making the game for the largest audience possible. Also, VR is not just a peripheral, its a whole platform. @@Twister-1 In this case, VR devices are peripherals, you cannot just buy the VR headset alone and play the game with it (you can't, say, buy an Oculus Quest and play it without a PC - you need both). And that's where the problem lies, requiring a non-standard (and expensive) peripheral to even be able to try it out. It would have been like requiring a mouse in a time where a mouse device wasn't standard in computers. Or making a GameCube game that requires a GBA to do anything. That's why it would have been reasonable if Valve went like "This is your game (😐), and this is your game with VR (😍)" instead of "No VR headset? Too bad." With the Quest 2 recently being on sale for $200, I really don't think there is a reason to not play this in VR. If you are fine with second-hand, you could probably get it even cheaper. The experience in VR is night and day compared to this.
