I've seen some people compare Rayman 3's combat to something like a Boomer Shooter, like the original Doom. Moving between hallways to dedicated combat arenas where combat consists of running, jumping and shooting, evasion and offense all at once, going for the powerups to give an advantage. And, if there's a score system involved... well, there you go.

The biggest weakness of Rayman is that it's tonal undecidedness allowed the Rabbids to subsume him into a far larger franchise for tiny babies, what is pretty much the Minions of gaming.

Rayman 3 was already going for wacky and let's not forget Rayman 4 did start development as a more traditional platforming game. …I honestly believe that Raving Rabbids is the way it is because the developers ended up with a bunch of ideas for Wii controls which they found more inspiring than making another platform game. While Rabbids ended up being a completely different genre, I also think it's fair to say Rayman 2 didn't really take that much from its predecessor.

That first Rayman game actually can't hide the fact it's a platformer made in Europe: massive and detailed graphics with brutal, labyrinthic level design packed in a generally whimsical-nonsense aesthetic, it's the type of stuff you used to see on the Amiga all the time (and the unfortunate console ports that got released as well)
@Kriss_ch.12 сағат бұрын
If we're comparing platforming devs, I definitely feel Rayman is closer to Rare's work than guys like Naughty Dog or Insomniac, probably just thanks to Europe lol. Donkey kong Country, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie, _Kameo_ or whatever. They spread it over more franchises but I think they went through a lot of the same stuff as Rayman, and they definitely had the same sorta super heavy texture work aesthetic going on in the 64 era. Rayman 3 is in a league of its own though, I haven't seen anyone else do that look that well.

The ending of Rayman 3 is actually a flashback, revealing Rayman's rebellious hands being the cause of the Hoodlum takeover. Though, André does still technically return in the game's GBA direct sequel spin-off, Hoodlums' Revenge, albeit as a lingering piece of his evil spirit left inside Globox after he left. He would've also appeared as a character to rescue in Rayman Raving Rabbids, alongside his newly introduced girlfriend Monik, when it was a platformer and before the Wii's technical limitations forced the game into being a party game.

I remember sitting in that pit where you have to use a rocket to hit a gong, scared witless and all I could hear was stuff like "pull out his nails" and "spit in his eyes" accompanied by the occasional roar. Would be interesting to see an Origins/Legends video. It's interesting to see how they tried to combine all three aesthetic aspects of these games while also giving different names to the characters and elements of this world but trying to convince us it's the same from these older games (Bubble Dreamer being Polokus from Rayman 2), and how those games have acquired this almost legendary status as 2D Platformer Greats.

Please look up some rayman 3 combo videos. You will be amazed at how much the scoring system synnergizes with the 3d platforming in this one. I put about 200 hours into scoring and it was an amazing experience. (Annoying to retry combos only start at 700K total score, so i dont recommend going past that) I swear to dog the scoring in this game, past a certain point of mastery feels like bayonettas combat somewhat lol
@pawlogates16 сағат бұрын
One example: rolling feels useless right? But in scoring the roll move becomes a very useful tool as you can reach a jevel JUST before the timer runs out, and you wouldnt reach it in time without rolling. Also rolling off a ledge gives you a speed boost. There is so much hidden shit in this game gameplay-wise, and most of it is well hidden in the level design.

Havent dug into the video - looking forward to it - but i kind of take umbrage with the title because i believe Ancel said the point of Rayman was to be a platform for creative ideas rather than a franchise with a consistent tone and setup. His limblessness is almost like a metaphor for the flexibility you can have with making a game for him, not to get too pretentious. Hence why you can stick him in an on foot racing game, an educational game and a mini game collection and essentially have no crossover between the audiences you garner with each unlike a Mario or Sonic. I mean the guy lives in a world called the Glade/Crossroads of Dreams, which implies like a dream his world will be constantly changing and not maintain continuity Still looking forward to watching this, B-Mask did a great video and Framerater recently quit so im feening for more Rayman vids

I've only ever played the demos for the Rayman games, but I've always found the character and the world(s) he inhabits fascinating. He really is a french character, and embodies all the anarchic energy that that nation of cheese-eaters often embodies. Nothing encapsulates the messiness of the Rayman franchise quite as well as the myriad versions of Rayman 2. Every single port seemed committed to changing numerous aspects: from the style of the level select, to the presence or absence of the lore system - to bigger changes like the inclusion of non-gibberish voice acting or altering the structures of particular rooms. It's not as though these changes were all upgrades that would progress from port to port either, each version seemed to have something that set itself apart from the others. Most people will probably bring up Rayman Revolution as the biggest example of this - with its explorable hub worlds, purchasable character upgrades and narrative tweaks culminating in the most radically different take on the game. Growing up I definitely saw it as the definitive version, but having replayed it recently a lot of its changes feel like unnecessary bloat, and its additions are markedly less refined than the original game. Clearly Ubisoft don't see it as the definitive version either since future ports left Revolution behind and went back to the tradition of being their own unique standard deviation away from the original. It's an utterly baffling decision, and yet as time has gone on I've almost come to admire it. There is something a little refreshing about coming back to play Rayman 2 by playing yet another slightly different version and having a slightly altered experience. Even if half the time I wonder whether something is actually a change or whether my memory has gotten worse.

I haven’t been able to verify this fact, but I recall hearing years ago that part of the reason Rayman 1’s difficulty is the way it is is because it was only ever play tested by the level designers. If that really is the case, then the game serves as a case study on why you should always have play testers who are dedicated to just that one task. In short, supposedly, Rayman 1’s creators weren’t designing the game to be as brutal as it ended up being intentionally.

It's really specific early 2000's french humour, heavly based on absurdism, running jokes and references. The acting and delivery is also 50% of the joke. I love the little guys you saved along the way. Some of them just looking for a dumb excuse to ghost you. Dude I cant believe it took 20 years until someone finally dedicated more than 20 seconds to by far the best part of rayman 3 (scoring). Everything else gameplay wise is mid in r3 (except movement) but scoring transforms this game from a 6/10 to something which is both insanely unique and by some weird miracle, also very well designed and tested, and... for some reason trying very hard to make people not even try to engage with it :/ Im actually in the middle of trying to expand on this scoring system in my own game, which is sadly pretty much canceled until my long covid disappears but its been 8 months so far so idk might be forever lol (not funny 😭). Please look up some r3 combo vids. I also heavily recommend replaying it for at least 500K total score. It will give you most of the hidden scoring experience. This scoring system legitimately kind of ruined other 3d platformers for me, and I dont mean ""ruined"" like just I kinda wish it was there. It feels like every single 3d platformer has a gaping hole in its gameplay now. If you replay this game for scoring a few times, its undeniably a huge and unique success which never being expanded upon should be considered a crime against gaming lol

The thing with Rayman's World and Character is that he doesnt really have control over it. Every change is because of Polokus who changes the world and characters randomly with his dreams, thats why Rayman is so different between Rayman 3 and Origins. Although Rayman from Sparks of hope seems more conected to Rayman 3 personality wise 🤔

I actually think the Jaguar version of Rayman 1 is the best, not because I played it myself but because I saw this video by Pimpeaux that was very meticulous and detailed in what changed between the Jaguar and PS1 version of the game

Rayman 3 is my ideal 3d aventure platformer game. I just feels like it hits every sweetspot, it feels like any other game like this dials it a bit too far in a certain direction, like Mario has great gameplay and level design but it's so abstract and gameplay focused that it's difficult to get immeresed in, Sly Cooper has a great story but limited mechanics due to that, some games have lackluster combat but great platforming and some are the opposit, some games have great core mechanics while also having really annoying gimmick sections while others are the opposit. Rayman 3 just has such a balanced mix, it's abstract enough to facilitate many interesting gameplay scenarios, but still feels like an actual world, it humorous but also atmospheric, it's combat and platforming are neither the best you'll ever see but they are both good enough to compliment each other and flow well instead of making you wish you'll be doing one over the other, and also it's just so damn beautiful I love the way it looks and sounds. It's really forgottena and underrated compared to other Rayman games, or other 3d adventure platformers of it's time, it's quite nice to see such a detailed video focusing on it

I never played the original Rayman on PS1. Knowing how obnoxious its difficulty was is a colossal deterrent for me. The closest I ever got to it was a really middling GBC port of the first game that I became so disenchanted with I just gave it to one of my childhood friends. I did religiously play 2 and 3 though throughout my childhood and I loved them without compromise......but in my most recent run of 3, time has not been at all kind to it. I know it's over 20 years old by this point so in due time, flaws are bound to shine through. But when it gets to the point where it effects how well the game even fuckin functions, that's a major red flag.

I consider myself a fan of this franchise, but it's a strange bunch of games. I think the most consistent factor is a great magical atmosphere, which is a surprising quality to have for a platforming franchise. Despite being by far the least fun, I'd still like to see a game that's a lot like Rayman 1. I really enjoy Origins and Legends but they're not much of a return to form beyond being 2D platformers, their actual gameplay is much more focused on flow and keeping momentum. While I consider them some of the best in terms of fast and fluid 2D platforming, Rayman 1's focus on precision movement in pretty non-linear levels feels more unique to me, even nowadays. I'd also love to see the charging fist to throw it further mechanic get explored further, which I don't feel has been explored much past that first game.

It's strange to think of Mario as a "strong character" but I guess he, and many other Nintendo mains, really are in the sense that they always promise a specific tone and attitude. The change from Wario Land 1 to Wario Land 4 is pretty extreme - Never mind Wario Ware. But you can largely expect the same general tone across all of the games, it's not like Wario suddenly starts rapping or gets a goatee or something just 'cause that's in the wind at the time of development. The biggest difference you get is whether the devs want him to be strong, or if they want him to be gross. The largest change-up is usually when the devs switch. Donkey Kong's personality is always the same, but Rare Donkey Kong Country and Retro Studios Donkey Kong Country isn't the same at all. I dunno how the teams on the Rayman titles were set up, but it'd be interesting to look at those credits and see who came along from game to game - I wouldn't be surprised at all if it changed a ton every time.

I can confirm that Rayman 3 humour is much better in French, it can still be it or miss but the localization does not really do it justice.

Every Rayman 1 level HAS music in the original release. It's missing from the PC port tho.
