Great project and I’m glad it works so well. Your outboard probably has a sheared pin at the propeller. Just a suggestion: I used a 30 pound thrust trolling motor and deep cycle batteries (one for out one for return) for the power on my john boat. It’s quieter, weighs less and provides as much or more power than a 7 HP motor. Also I’ve added a 100 watt solar panel and charger to extend my range and provide shade when wanted.

Yep, I think all the comments are in agreement. That 3hp Evinrude should have no trouble pushing that boat along at a fair clip, so the prop shear pin has probably sheared. Make a couple of row-locks and get some proper oars and it should row quite well too. Great little project by the way, a boat from two pieces of ply and a bit of pine here and there, awesome.

That thing will row like a dream. After you pick up a few shear pins for your prop, add some oar locks to your boat. Get oars not paddles, will be perfect for it. Get further away from shore before you lower that long shaft and raise it before coming too close to shore. That motor should move that boat plenty fast. Always keep spair shear pins with you in the boat. Make another video when you are out again and up to cruising speed.

Keep a couple of small nails and some pliers on your boat or in the tackle box. They work well for shear pins. Especially if you use it in a shallow creek or river.

Check the shear pin on the prop. 3 HP ought to move that little boat at a good clip not just drift along. Awesome, is it 1/2" plywood? I built my own kayak for $37, totally half assed it for fun. . . . Eleven years ago and she still floats, been in the icy river many seasons, camping, hauling gear, caught in a giant storm once and she saved me. Have you made sure the propeller is well below the transom? If not it would be sucking water up and then back instead of straight back, causing you to be limited in speed.
@michaelcolby42414 жыл бұрын
You can see how well it will move that boat by how well it pushed the boat aground the first time it fired up. Most likely when you seared the pin in the prop. THe nut only holds the prop on, there is a pin that locks it up. Another bit of advise is to not let it run with the shaft out of water, there is a rubber impeller in the lower end. You don't want to let this run dry, if it fails the motor will overheat. Nice boat, thanks for the video.

Impressive craftsmanship and a handsome boat! The 3 horse motor should push it fine once you get it sorted. But I agree that an electric trolling motor is the way to go. If the propeller has a rubber hub the hub is probably worn out. Put the motor in gear with the off and try to turn the prop by hand. If the prop turns without spinning the motor then the prop needs replacement or you can have the hub repaired.

@lloydholt65114 жыл бұрын
I agree. Runners provide protection for the hull and help the boat to track. Try paddling out a short distance from the launch point before starting your motor. I agree with others pull the prop off and see if the shear pin is intact. Wise men always keep several shear pins in their tool kit or tackle box. Evinrude dealer should have them or be able to order them for you. Great video Enjoy your boat and engine

I'll echo the comments about the shear pin. Also check that the engine stem is long enough to put the prob below the bottom of the boat. nice boat though, the back looks very low in the water though with the outboard on it.
@RaiseHull4 жыл бұрын
Do check the prop - but when you check it see if it has a rubber insert in the hub. Sometimes they have that instead of or in conjunction with a pin. Sometimes the rubber dries out and rots a bit and you can feel like it's ok when you spin it by hand or put the engine in gear with no load, but when you put a load on it (ie in the water in gear trying to move the boat) the shaft spins and the prop really doesn't. You may need a new prop if that's the case.
@PaulWooten234 жыл бұрын
Saw a 4-year old kid laughing as he dog-paddled past you like you were sitting still LOL! Wait, you WERE sitting still! Put a trolling motor on it, the light weight of the motor will compensate for the weaker power, and you'll go faster. Great work on the boat, looked like fun. I'll have to stick with making a floating party barge using the used 55 gallon poly barrels that I've seen here on KZbin. They look a lot safer...

Could be a couple things. The RPMs say you should have been moving alot faster. Check the splines they may be worn and slipping but more than likely it is the sheer pin. Do a check if your worried about the compression should be above 90 and should be within 10 psi of the other cilander. Most good powerheads are 100 to 135 psi but will run ok at 90 is most cases. Also sounds like some timing and carb adjustment might be in order. You can order the manual on eBay for a few dollars will be a disk you can put on a computer. Keep working at it.

On the motor I think everyone is correct on the pin. You should be able to achieve significant thrust and speedeven for just a 3 horsepower. Would love to see a video of you cruising at full speed. The exhaust ports are almost always to remain below waterline. Again I am very impressed at your boat building skill, especially if this was your first build. @@TheGarageEngineer sure I will, I enjoy your determination. Watch you do it, give me courage to do it too. Sometimes I want to give up and go buy a electric motor for my canoe. My motor runs last year but doesn't run anymore this year... watching your video and troubleshotting along. Thanks for your time.

Did you get your motor to operate correctly?

Yes. I am also working in an update video now where I take it out on the water again with a newly installed rudder. Coming soon.

Do you mind me asking what you found wrong with it

@@dbentley2195 it was the shear pin in the propeller. I hit a rock under water when I ran towards the shore. The repair will be in the upcoming video.

@@TheGarageEngineer cool glad it was a cheap fix good luck should push your little boat fast as you want that small of homemade boat to go 👍❤

I don't think it has anything to do with the motor. It was turning plenty of revs. And I would think that almost any prop would push that little boat right along. The think the poster who suggested a sheared pin would be right (that or something else that keeps the prop from turning adequately). I wonder if a little ballast near the bow might level you out a bit once you getting it moving as it should. Life jacket might be a good addition.
