Gaslight Anthem is often overlooked and terribly underrated. Brian Fallon is extraordinary! To hell with the critics... This song will be playing at my funeral.

Read a review saying this song and selected poems were skip able. What? I guess brian was right when he said the press would hate this album. I love it.

I'm a big fan of Gaslight Anthem, but the more I listen to them the more I realise their music is made to be clapped and sung along to live

I understand why the press didn't like this album. I also understand why one reviewer said it wasn't 'cohesive' or like what Brian said it would be. But I think for those who listen, and find this music, they feel it and understand the entire thing. This album fits together more for me than American Slang does. Maybe they've never felt some things, or maybe you forget what it's like to listen to music, over and over, not as a job listening to new releasesevery day, hastily scribbling out notes and anecdotes so you can get paid. No, I think this music isn't for people like that,at least, not in that point in their lives. I think this is for the young and rash and unthinking children who feel the lyrics, even though they haven't really experienced the heartbreak at 16 like they would ending a 10 year marriage. But the words are for them. And the old, experienced, glory days long gone types as well, because it feels like a scar that's healed up years ago, but the music can make you feel as if you were young again and your wound is fresh and bleeding down. And it's for everybody in between, no matter where they're driving, even if they're at their peak and feel like they can't feel anything bad. I think if, given enough time, everybody could understand this music and album. Yup. Yup. I truly do. I heard one song and the first thought was, "I can already read the 'Gaslight Has Changed, Man!' comments all over the place". But if you've been a fan since they had their first pounding, bleeding heart song in Wherefore Art Though, Elvis?, to their explosion in '59 sound, the great song that was Handwritten, to now, and all the b-sides throughout... You'll understand. It's quite a journey, it's quite an experience. I myself was just 17 listening to them for the first time. 59 sound coming out and defining my life, graduation, drifting of friendships. All the way to today, where I'm older and I've moved out, up, and down around everywhere. And this record releases and reminds me of every happy or sad thing I've been through. Some songs make me want to cry, call up old long lost friends. But I'm rambling. I think if a critic says 'skip this song', and you happen to love it, those are the people I like the best. I think that shows good taste. This is a great song on a great album.

Dan Clemente Well said :) I'm not a long-time fan (actually, I pretty much just "discovered" GA), but I can really relate to what you wrote. And I just can't stand the comments about this or that band/artist changing - everything and everyone does, guys, so just chill out.

Dan Clemente you nailed it on the head man. Brian's lyrics are so unique and rare amongst today's mainstream market. So much passion, fantastic stuff..

The best thing about Brian's music style is always evolving. It's never an abrupt change and he continues to bring his "past" sound into the "new". He also uses metaphors a lot or adds lines that reflect important values. Or lines that fit into the meaning of the songs but are also references of pop culture or a historical event. Most people are honestly too ignorant to appreciate this kind of beauty. I also think it's amazing that the melody of each song changes subtly in each song, he'll start with one and just keeps adding until the end. My absolute favorites are when the melody feels completely opposite of what the lyrics are telling me until I listen to it a few times.
