I absolutely love this generation of the XC90, In my country these are very rare and very expensive because of high taxes, all of them were diesel except a handful of them in V8 specification of which only 1 was in my city, i got to ride in one once and it was passion red and was absolutely in love. I will at some point get an XC90, new ones however they cost the equivalent of $140k at my place with the D5 and the p2 generation are hard to come by but one day for sure.

@@damilolaakanni Bigger in terms of dimension or interior space? Mind you the E53 didn't have third row seats. Over here in the UK they were launched in 2002 and there was also a 2.4 5 cylinder turbo diesel which in earlier models came with 160 bhp than in 2005 thay produced 180 bhp and in 2010 they put out 200 bhp. They are not the most powerful but they have good low down torque and suit the car well. We got the T6 and the V8. I think we got the T5 but not sure but I don't think we got the 3.2. One thing to realize here is that the V8 engine was manufactured by Kawasaki. The Japanese do quite well with various engines as we all know, but it was SUPER HARD to work on…no room anywhere. The 2.5 L, five cylinder turbo was manufactured in Sweden by Volvo. It is a genuine Volvo powerplant and It’s bomb proof if you use synthetic oil and drive sensible. Well built engine (turbocharger is Japanese) The transmissions are another issue all together. The transmission that they put behind the five cylinder 2.5 turbo is made in Japan and it is amazing. The Aisin AW 55-51SN (think Toyota and Nissan) It’s probably the most durable transmission out of all that was used in the XC 90. It is the same transmission that Nissan used in their minivans back in the day and it’s very strong. The four-speed General Motors, that they put behind a 3.2 was a plagued and it was the demise of many xc90’s. I don’t know what Transmission they put behind a Kawasaki V8.

@damilolaakanni Жыл бұрын
I actually heard that the V8 was designed by Volvo and built by Yamaha (yeah, the same company that worked on many Toyota engines in the 2000's). And the V8s got an Aisin 6 speed automatic transmission.

A shame you guys didn't get the D5 2.4 litre 5 cylinder diesel engine. These engine were quite bulletproof. The V8 XC90s are quite rare in the UK due to higher running costs (fuel and Vehicle Excise Duty). The split folding tailgate orignated in the Range Rover. That's where BMW got the idea from. They acquired the Rover Group (of which Land Rover was a part) in 1994 when the P38 was introduced so they had access to the Range Rover technology to develop the E53 X5.

Its really a shame you never got to experience the 2.4D/D5 engines. It suits the XC90 a lot. To be fair the 2.9 is a good engine but that gearbox….it has the same 0-60 mph time as the D5 version. If you want speed, get the V8. Just later versions where they fixed some design flaws. If you want maximum reliability and as new production date as possible - 3.2. Its goes kinda alright, fuel consumption is the same as the V8 but at least its even more reliable and if im not mistaken, it had the 6 speed Aisin which in itself is a huge plus.

@@BernonCars You right. I have a XC90 and doesn’t bather to tune this engine. I choose the 2.5T over D5 because its sounds better and quicker than the D5. V8 breakes itself to pieces due to balance shaft failure. Did get fixed i 2008 or 2009 though. So at least stay away from earlier V8 models. I used that money on preventive maintenance such as changing fluids all around because Volvo service program does not include transmission oil change, haldex oil change, steering servo hydraulic oil and not break fluid change either. Typical neglect of these leads to replacing brake master cylinder, load valve and calipers. Then transmission rebuild, servo pump failure and Haldex failure. Costly repairs because Volvo want to appeare cheap to service, and these fluids is all reccomended but not included in service program. At least here in europe. (I live in Oslo, Norway)

2005 XC90 2.5T5 AWD here, and you'll find that the fronts wear slightly quicker than the rear, since the AWD is front-biased, as @BernonCars mentions, but in practice, you'll be replacing all four at roughly the same time. Here in Canada, I run Nitto 3-seasons on Touren rims, and switch to Motomaster winters on the OEM Volvo aluminum rims. Since I'm switching the tires twice a year, it's an opportunity to rotate the fronts to the back, and vice-versa, which definitely helps average out the wear. @brembodream 's advice on keeping diameter/sizing identical is crucial, and I would further suggest that you keep to the same brand/SKU of tire when replacing if you must do only two. I've always had to do all 4 when replacing: I usually get three years on average from each set, based on my heavy mileage and slightly more aggressive driving style. YMMV, obviously.

What about the tendancy for the V-8 valves to leak / difficult to repair (what the 3rd party Euro-shop told me when I had them check out an 08 V8 for me) thanks
@ghostwrench2292
@ghostwrench2292 4 ай бұрын
Volvo V8 valves don’t normally leak. The engine itself will usually need some oil leaks attended to at higher mileage but the engine itself is solid. Some techs are weary of working on this engine for some reason but maybe since I worked on these early in my career, I developed a familiarity and appreciation for this engine, so I was excited when a 2008 V8 XC90 came for sale in my budget, so I bought it. Just find a good mechanic and the P2 XC90 will take good care of you.

I am a long time Volvo owner and fan they make solid vehicles but do stupid things that make no sense and right now they are currently driving away and alienating many would be customers with direction of vehicles in my opinion. The 1999-2005 T6 6cyl where they had to use the GM transmission due to size constraints never made any sense when they had a proven 5cyl and could have had a low pressure and higher pressure version with more power. I feel that reliability issue really hurt Volvo's reputation where many swore to never buy Volvo again and I believe Volvo is doing a similar thing with hybrids that in my opinion have reliability issues. It is funny how back then they were clearly worried about competitors and engines being too small but now with new SPA XC90's go the other direction to a dinky 2.0L and are all militant about not going to anything larger which has been a major marketing issue in my opinion. It feels like Volvo is all over the place. The thing that always cracked me up about the P2 XC90's in previous years to the one you were driving was the mixed match woodgrain. The one you were driving was a newer model that didn't have this issue but I remember seeing 2 totally different shades of woodgrain and like 3 totally different shades if it had the woodgrain steering wheel option. I have seen the steering wheel be a reddish brown, then light and dark brown on the center console and glove box strip I just thought looked terrible. That and fact that sitting in the front always felt tight to me compared to our P2 V70 and S80 is the reason I never bought the P2 XC90 although we loved driving them. Volvo had dominated with SUV's you would see them everywhere. Sadly I feel Volvo has handed business to the competition because first I have read comments from prior Volvo owners that said they don't want the new 4cyl and they are buying from competitors just due to this. I believe this has been a major marketing issue with new vehicles Volvo totally underestimated. Then Volvo further alienated customers by making them all hybrid now which many people including myself don't want. Then those that do buy hybrids I believe will likely have reliability issues which will drive customers away similar to the GM transmission issues. California used to be what I would call a Volvo state you would see newer Volvos all over the road and now I hardly see any it's very sad and I have serious concerns about Volvo's future. What I am seeing now are newer competitor SUV's and vehicles all over the road that offer larger engines and traditional NON hybrid options. It is funny you mentioned the MDX because I am seeing newer Acura MDX's everywhere in California even RDX's and TLX sedans. I feel Volvo sadly has just handed business to competitors and I actually have a page on my website about mistakes I believe Volvo is making. I have been trying to get through to Volvo and their executives about the mistakes I believe they are making and to make changes. Volvo has also driven away customers with issues like brakes in new SPA vehicles because they made the pads too soft where pad deposits were ruining rotors and pads were wearing as low as 15,000 miles then was like 4 years too late in my opinion to finally just recently revise pads. My P2 Volvos had the best brakes I had ever experienced extremely durable and lasted with no pulsation ever.

6:15, I don't know who at Volvo comes up with the idea to fit plush beige mats to a car, it's just not practical, a car's not one's living room! One walks in the streets where dogs (and humans) urinate and defecate, one may wear boots with black soles that mark floors and carpets, mechanics get in with dirty shoes etc. I experienced the same while working at Jaguar in the 80s, cars would arrive with the most wonderful thick pile floor mats. Mats must be black!

Bigest problems what are killing this cars: interior.. why they will not lift it? 2014 still looks really old. Seriously dont understand why s60 when it shows up in 2011 had new interior. XC60 - from 2007. Even v50/s40 from 2004 had interior what looks normal.. but here? :/ It doesnt looks luxury, it looks cheap. Another - one of the shitest gearboxes. They are killing all power from d5/t5/t6 and... fibreoptic.. Volvo.. only one brand where you cannot put normal after market radio with nav.. From other hadn.. xc90 mk2.. is a melex with TV everywhere.. its not even a car.

Yes T6 has bad transmission. If you use a XC90 for hauling heavy trailers, install a external cooler for the transmission. Especially important for D5, but these don’t have part number for it. You can use V8 external oil cooler. T5 AWD is reccognized as the most relaible drive train. A really good deal can be a were good deal, because the 2006 model has all the tech updates such as haldex gen 3 and the D5 has the 185hk in 2006 as well
