Main reason I went to (Malaysian) Borneo - was travelling from Singapore to Thailand overland passing through peninsular Malaysia, and in a random book shop picked up a Lonely Planet guidebook. On one of the photo pages was this very pointy treeless rocky mountain peak which grabbed my interest. It was Mt. Kinabalu which as it turned out is one of the highest peaks in east Asia and can be climbed in under two days. So I flew to Kota Kinabalu, went to the national park, and climbed it - fantastic experience! Then visited some places in Sabah, like Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a mud massage spa and some scuba dive sites off the east coast. I had a friend who was teaching at a school in Brunei so went by boat via Labuan (a tax-free island where you can buy cheap booze) and onward to BSB (Bandar, the capital of Brunei). As fun as it was to stay with my Kiwi friend it was also weird this country so locked away from the world, like everyone was in a hypnotic trance thinking it was the best place on Earth so why go anywhere else? I took a bus to Miri, where it was nice to feel relatively "free" after imprisoned Brunei. Then visited the Niah Caves park which has absolutely huge caves going on for long distances with very high ceilings and tons of bats. I hopped a quick flight to Kuching in Sarawak which had a pretty happy vibe, except the name means "cat" and they routinely kill street dogs. There are cat-themed things everywhere - cat taxi, cat disco, cat hotel, etc. Then I flew back to Johor Bahru on peninsular Malaysia and went to Tioman island for some diving. Anyway, I think Malaysian Borneo is definitely worth a couple weeks or a month to see some amazing nature. Happy travels! Map here: maps.app.goo.gl/ZJzmGProHU2CamzU7

In an alternate universe where Sabah and Sarawak never joined the 1963 Malaysian Federation, Borneo would’ve been somewhat of a microcontinent with five countries. It’s an interesting landmass for sure and despite the differences, you can pretty much speak the same language without much barrier. We all have our own issues but y’know what, we do love our own neighbours. In fact, there’s been attempts by governments of Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, and Indonesia to expand the road network (us Malaysians calling it the Pan-Borneo Highway), with some road expansions reaching the nooks of the Kalimantan border. Hopefully this new cooperation does rake in not just potential tourists, but also foreign investors. Sincerely, a Sabahan native.

I have not ventured much outside my village except going to Belaga town to buy groceries. My village can be considered the most remote village, not only in Sarawak but in Malaysia.. Anyway. Lusong laku is fast becoming an eco attraction point for malaysians and foreigners. If you are a foreigner, you may have a language barrier as most of us are not very fluent in English but you can still communicate with us. I was there for a few weeks in 1992 working on the river Kapuas which meanders up and down roughly following the equator from east to west, carrying a huge volume of fast-flowing water, reaching the sea at Pontianak, almost dead on the equator, which, by the way, has a population over 650,000, while you also neglected to mention Balikpapan on the east coast, 100 km south of Samarinda and about the same population, nearly 750,000. The new to-be capital of Indonesia, Nusantara is nestled in between Samarinda and Balikpapan, and is projected eventually to have a population of 1 1/2 million. It is less than 1 degree south of the equator.

It's sometimes called as The Land of Dayak, because it's the largest & indeginous ethnic in the Island. There's several theories where the name of Boreno comes from. First is from Sanskrit word "Varana" which mean water. Second is Portuguese word Buruni (kingdom of the northwest coast). These two words is the original name for Brunei, and then pronounce as Borneo (the whole Island). IKN nusantara is good for modernization of Borneo, but there's two main impact that the local need to concern. First, Borneo will lost its forest. Second, the indigenous Dayak people potentially lost their status as the "tuai rumah". Because, the new capital city will bring many people from outside (other ethnic) especially the Malay, Java, and they'll migrate and become citizen in the Island. So, the Dayak will lost their forest and we don't know if they'll received the main benefits (good job & important main role), economy in their home land. I don't think so.

as an Indonesian and native Dayak from east Kalimantan (East Borneo), i must say you made many mistakes in this video. first, the island original name is Klemantan which become "Kalimantan". Borneo are mispelled of "Brunei Kingdom" by western colony. 0:50 the island name is Papua. "New Guinea" is a country on the east part of Papua Island (Papua New Guinea). the western part of Papua island belongs to Indonesia. 2:40 we have around 400-ish native language in the island. and it's not the most diverse, Papua has more than 1500 languages. with each villages has it own language. and as a native, we didn't respect you saying "if Borneo are it's own country ...." over and over again. since there's many big countries try to fully exploit our resource and nature by separating us, even attempt to initiate a separatist movement. if you say that in here, i'm afraid you'll get in trouble.
@led3194

"many big countries try to fully exploit our resource and nature by separating us" The same can be said to Malaysia and Indonesia. Sabah and Sarawak could have been rich with the resource it has, same goes to Kalimantan. Currently, the future of these land are paved and determined by those not born & live within the homeland. I don't like the idea of a united borneo since it has so many different people & may likely result in conflicts. But suggesting as if we aren't already exploited is just false.

I'm Kadazan. A native race of Sabah. Sabah was known as North Borneo aka Crown Colony of British Borneo and was granted independence in Aug 31, 1963. The first Prime Minister of North Borneo and 6 others leaders from various race/tribes was killed in 1976, June 6 which is known as Double 6 Tragedy. The death of North Borneo Leaders led to Tun Abdul Razak and Tun Hussein Onn a Malays extremist to force Sabah joining Federation of Malaysia. In the June 6, 1976 North Borneo leaders was on board a plane heading to KL to inform KL that North Borneo wishes to become a republic. But Tun Hussein, knowing that Malaya cannot survive because of lack natural resources needed to "kidnap" And force Sabah (North Borneo) into the formation of Malaysia. Singapore managed to leave the union. North Borneo were dominantly Christian until the famous Islamisation of Sabah in 1976 to 1992 under the "Project IC Mahathir". Mahathir allowed the influx of Muslim from Southern Philipines (Palawan, Mindanao, Zamboanga, Tawi TAwi etc). These Muslims from Philipines was converted in Muslim Voters that led Tun Mustapha, a puppet politician by Mahathir to create chaos and the famous riot in 1986 in Kota Kinabalu.

Yep, so many are oblivious to the distinction between "km squared" and "square km". The unit symbol "km²" is the root cause; it should be pronounced "square kilometers". I saw a sign recently where a volume of 100 km³ was described as a cube 100 km on each side. It's exasperating... I want the time back, that I spent learning all of this. Apparently it's now irrelevant.

Lucky to visit? I've basically lived here most of my life. North of Borneo in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. Lots of clips you've shown are from our capital Kota Kinabalu, Sabah which is pretty unique for having a capital next to the ocean. I do live in the interior parts but it's mostly a 2 hours drive to Mt. Kinabalu. Heck I'm working in even further interior parts about an hour or two away from the Indonesian borders. Otherwise, a great spots for nature tourism. Just make sure to say hello to the locals 😂.
