I owned a 6.7 Powerstroke Super Duty. The engine itself was excellent--its downfall, the same with ALL current generation HD pickup diesels, is the emission system. Extended idling, short distance trips, and light load use will cause no end of expensive problems with the diesel emission system. 20 years ago, fleet buyers that had pickups with extended idle cycles, etc. would buy diesels because of their more frugal fuel use under such conditions. Today, those fleet buyers are largely avoiding diesel pickups like the plague because of the emission issues.

We you asked for my thoughts lol! I have a 2022 F350 7.3 Tremor that I do love. The engine is the heart and the oil is the lifeblood of any vehicle, so it gets synthetic oil changes every 10K or less. I tow a toy hauler of say about 9500lbs occasionally. I do like the 4.30 gears. In the meantime it is a daily driver and despite its huge size, my wife loves it too! We have taken it to SC for a trip and it performed fantastic! Next week we will be going to Moab UT, Monument Valley UT, and Sedona AZ hauling the trailer, from Ontario. The proof will be in the pudding over the next few weeks regarding reliability and capability. The trans does shift hard sometimes but I find that is unloaded and during shifts in the city. Economy wise, I can get 16 mpg in the truck when empty and just taking it easy at 90-95K on back highways or roads...but typically 14-15 mpg is easily achievable doing an hour run or longer at reduced speeds as above. Towing is obviously quite different and I am looking forward to seeing how it works out over this long haul. If you are interested, I will give you an update in a few weeks and some video/photo content to go with it. Great to see your view on the Godzilla!

Yup! Specsheet numbers don't tell you anything but peak- the dyno is where you actually see what a vehicle is capable of, and that's where the 7.3 is very impressive. By contrast the GM 6.6 gasser doesn't even reach 350 ft lb until 4k rpms while the Ram 6.4 gasser peaks at 380 ft lb at 4k rpms... huge difference. To put that into perspective, both GM and Ram at 3,000 RPMs are at or just over HALF the torque of the Ford at 1500- just let that sink in. That's why people compare the 7.3 to a 10-15 year old diesel- because that's exactly how it performs.

16:10 about the oil pump, the old 400ci V8 was considered a dog mostly because it had terrible bottom end wear potential, but most of that bottom end wear occurred at low RPM due to low oil pressure because the pump volume was too low at low RPM. Otherwise the 400 is a fine engine (not withstanding it’s low power and being choked down with 70s era smog junk). If you happen to be building one you just put in a high volume oil pump and low RPM oil starvation is solved. 400s that spent most of their time on the highway at cruise usually didn’t have bottom end wear issues. I suspect Ford is going to have to revisit the oil pump issue on the Godzilla.

Exhaust lifter loads will rise as cylinder pressure rises, since the valves must open against cylinder pressure at the blowdown event. RV & box truck applications have a more severe duty cycle than passenger applications, spending more of their time at higher loads (= higher cylinder pressures) as well as higher RPM. This may be a contributing factor to the failures.
@blawblawblueblaw3811 Жыл бұрын
My father and I deliver campers part-time in the United States and bought 2 of the 2021 f350 single rear wheel 7.3L running the 3.73 gear ratio one had a lifter failure at 82000 miles so we had the cam lifters and oil pump replaced and are currently at 107000 miles on that one. The other one has 156000 miles both are running strong with that being said the main problem we have had is actually melting the sparkplug wires. In my opinion the main thing killing these engines is the programming while using cruse control or running them like a Chevy 350 from 1975. If you start down or up a hill it can bring the RPM up around 5K to try and maintain the desired speed. Don't get me wrong, I love this engine and the 10 speed transmission and would gladly buy it again, but that is where I believe the failure is coming from

I really wanted to get an F 250 with the Godzilla, because I do a lot of heavy off-road towing on my ranch. I really like the power it produces. In the end though, because these trucks are so expensive, I went with the Ram 2500 6.4, because of the dependability factor. Another thing to consider with the cab/chassis lifter failures is how's the engines are treated during their first few hours of runtime. Since RV/box truck chassis are started up and moved a few feet and shut down again several times a day throughout the build process, I would argue the numerous short segments of run time without reaching operating temp can be hard on top end components.

As someone who's got 4.5 decades on this planet I find it hilarious that the younger generation refers to a 400+hp V8 truck engines power as "modest". I grew up with my dad driving our 1969 F350 4x4 with a swapped in 302. The original 360 died, the replacement 360 was killed by parts jockeys backfiring it to death and the 390 died somewhere halfway to getting it's heads rebuilt. Dad hauled or towed dozers, gravel, cows, grain, firewood, etc with probably about 200hp and maybe 300 lb-ft of torque with no problems. Hell our early 60's (sorry can't remember the exact year) F-600 would haul 6-7 yards down the highway no worries and it had a 262 straight 6.

Great video. I've had my 2022 7.3 for 6000 miles only. Was concerned about low end torque in fwd. Used it hunting last fall in deep snow and it performed quite well. I am used to a Duramax so was happy with that. So haven't had any problems yet, still basically new . Interesting to hear about lifter issues, I change oil every 5k and use mobil1 full synthetic? So overall I'm happy with it. My son works for a Wildlands fire co and they have one f 550 w/7.3. it will do lots of idle time so will be interesting to see how it fairs. Again good vid ,thanks

I've been wanting to upgrade my F150 to a Super Duty so I'm shopping around. I've been interested in the new 7.3L trucks but I'm skeptical of new designs, its got big boots to fill from the outgoing V10. I heard you call the V10 a boat anchor, I haven't experienced that. I find them fantastic from the V10's I've been around; decent fuel economy, low maintenance, excellent reliability, great towing, and they're peppy for big ole truck for running around. They were a solid replacement for the 460, and a great alternative to the expense and upkeep of modern diesels.
@billbarton69036 ай бұрын
Excellent video. Lots of great information. I want to take issue with 1 second of it....at 2:40 you say the 7.3L Godzilla weighs a thousand pounds which it does not. The 6.7L Ford diesel weighs about 990lbs, the Cummins is about 1050lbs and Godzilla weighs about 540lbs. It is immediately obvious that these trucks have a dramatic amount of nose weight removed just by how they ride especially when the terrain/pavement gets rough. Its also evident in how sure footed the trucks are off road in 2wd with 500lbs removed from the front. Their diesel sisters will climb a damn tree in 4wd with all that weight over the front wheels so I'm not taking anything away from them, but the F350/250 with the 7.3L V-8 is VERY well balanced right out of the box.

I purchased the 2020 F-350 Lariat Super Duty with a 7.3 L Godzilla engine about 2 and a half years ago. I purchased this vehicle used from Don Hinds Ford in Fishers Indiana. Certified used vehicle with factory warranty up to 100,000 mi. I purchased the vehicle and it had 44,000 miles and right now it has 89,100.. I have experienced two issues with the misfire recently in the last month. The misfires were bad enough where the truck had almost no power everything was covered by warranty both times but it's still was a pain in the ass cuz the dealership had to have the truck for a few days each time. Other than those two issues I have not had any problems with this engine. I pull 15K on a weekly basis and most of the miles had a trailer behind it with heavy equipment. These vehicles keep track of your engine hours and idling time also keep track of the mileage with a trailer. So this truck has 68,400 accumulated trailer miles. I have pulled fully loaded 24,000 lb multiple times and the truck handles it very well. I never take the RPMs over 5,000

Engine weight is actually pretty light almost half of what you said. 538 pounds. So far so good with my 20 I have 28k miles on it. I changed the oil at 1,500 miles 3000 miles and have done 6,000 intervals ever since. always used full synthetic 5w30 in motorcraft or mobile 1 with wix or motorcraft filters. After watching this I’m going to start changing oil every 3k as I plan on keeping this truck for 20 years.

Have a 21 F250 and had to replace spark plug wires. Other than that I have a 5 star tune, AFE throttlebody upgrade, AFE cold air intake, and AFE exhaust upgrade. Currently at 49k miles and it's the best truck I've owned. I've towed close to 20k lbs and normally pull around 10k every day. It's an awesome truck and compares to my stock F550 with a 7.3l diesel. The gearing is 4.30 and with the 10 speed it's amazing! Also live in Colorado and have towed up at 10k ft and average around 6500 ft elevation. Just reset fuel economy headed out for bids and got 13.8 mpg not towing. When towing normal load of around 10k i get around 10 to 11 mpg. When I can afford it, I'll buy another one!

2021 F250 Tremor 7.3 has been wonderful. Before 2008, I always drove diesels and this engine reminds me of them. The power is all I could ask for. In town, mpg is as bad as my E350 van. On the highway, at 65mph and 1,500 pound load in the bed it gets 16-17.5 mpg. At 75 mph , not great. The Tremor is geared low so at 45 mph it is already in 10th gear. Anyway, I love it, no issues, wouldn't change a thing.

I see some really expensive aftermarket conversions to a standard oil pump. Surprised no one has came out with a kit for the factory pump… I couldn’t find a picture of the variable displacement pump to see if it was mechanical or electronically controlled but either way it would just be a matter of either changing a spring or some programming/in between harness to increase the output at idle. Enjoyed your video, I’ll be replacing my service truck soon and deletes are getting harder to come by

Use commercial grade oils in commercial grade trucks. The common oils today do not have enough zinc period. I have seen a couple of the 7.3 ford gas engines in the 400k mile range with no failures in heavy box trucks that drive 70k miles a year running rotella oils every 5k miles. The commercial Ford dealer replaced the oil pumps before the trucks were sold with a constant pressure pump. Ford should offer these trucks with 6 or 7 speed manual transmissions. The firm shift automatic lasts longer than a smooth shift truck that gets hots allowing them to slip when shifting. For decades we put in shift kits to make automatics last longer in heavy use applications. If you want smooth car ride then get a 1/2 ton or a car.

I had a 2014 Ford Raptor with the 6.2 gas engine. I owned it for 5 years, drove it to 156,000 miles and idled it for years. I am a home builder in Dallas,TX there were many days when the truck didn’t shut off and idled for 8-9 hours for MONTHS on end. I used good oil and changed it according to what the oil called for around 5,000 miles. The only problem I had with that truck was a leak in the a/c condenser and the dash had to be removed. I had a 2020 Raptor after that with many issues here are a couple that I recall, two bad turbos, cam phaser, and other electronics like the screen just not coming on and other issues with it. Just incase anyone was curious about that engine.

7.3 is a game changer period! If people get past a 2% lifter failure rate and 13mpgs which by the way is cheaper than diesel at current costs these trucks would fly off the lot. To be honest i havent seen a 7.3 sitting at my local dealer its all 6.7 because they want 100k for them now at 7 or 9%.

Indeed, if the variable displacement gerotor oil pump drops oil pressure to ~7 PSI at idle, that sounds like it could become an issue. Ford could revise the gearing and/or gerotor profile to increase pressure at idle while maintaining the same pressure as before at higher RPM. Supposedly, they save ~1 MPG at highway speeds and RPM

Hello from Colorado, USA!! I have a 2021 F350 7.3liter with 4.30 gearing. I tow a 10000 lb travel trailer; and it has done real well in our Colorado mountains! We are at around 25k miles so far; and about 18000 miles towing. Yes...on our 5000th mile-ish, we did have a harness issue that was repaired under warranty. Also, we do have a hard shift point going into or out of 5th gear (of the 10 speeds) when empty. The maintenance team has reflashed the computer once, but I did a trailer tow shortly after it; so I feel that the transmission was still in the "learning" period to set its shift points; which seems to have a hard shift. My idling ration seems to be at about 100 hours of idling and 1000 hours of driving; so, I am hoping that is at an acceptable level!! I really try hard to not idle. Probably most of that idle time is when hooking up or unhooking the camper. Yes...I agree....oil changes are cheap as compared to engine repairs!! I change the oil at 5000 mile intervals. Since we live in a walking town, I'd say probably my biggest negative is that I can go like up to 9 months between changes; which I extrapolated off of this video that is not so good. Otherwise, I really really like the truck!

My 2020 7.3 F250 Godzialla. Definitely an issue with the 10 speed. Mine was fixed. The picture the mechanic showed me when my transmission was completely apart at the dealer looked like some sort of ring that had a space which was what he said the issue was. Part was on backorder so mine was at the dealer for 8 weeks. Loaner was provided. But they fixed it and no issues since. Hard shifting in two different gears was the issue with it finally getting stuck in 10th gear. No charge all warranties. Same hars shifting with my 2018 10speed f150. Real bad in reverse. But traded it for the f250 Godzilla so never know if it finally went bad.

I have a 2019 f 150 with the eco boost. At 36000 my phasers started making noise they replaced them and said are programing would fix everything. In about 8000 miles it felt like it had a minor engine miss so back in it went. They told me what it was doing wasthe new programing they installed was creating a minor slip in the transmission and it needed the original version. I also told them it had a minor rattle on startup they checked it and said one of my phasers was starting to make noise. By this time I was getting close to running out of warranty. The service manager told me that Ford had redesigned the phasers and they were going to install those. I haven't had any problems with it since. I will say I love this engine.
