The sole reason to eliminate the tried and true dipstick is pure undiluted greed. The average owner will be forced to go to a dealership for a fluid check which is coercion . Fiat’s products could have a dipstick if so ordered from mfg. Before I’m hit with the technical come-back as to reasons to eliminate a dipstick, I was military trained on their equipment which had dipsticks, civilian trained on vehicles with same. A simple check of fluid levels is NOT going to contaminate fluid or damage the transmission.

dealership literally won't service these transmissions. As far as they are concerned the fluid is lifetime.
@petertensuda1192 Жыл бұрын
Then they did it so you have to buy a new transmission or truck win win for the transmission manufacturer and their important customer..the manufacturer not you the consumer. And how do they know how long me or you will live what a joke. Lifetime means whatever period of time it will last so forget about trying to extend its life.

The number one reason transmissions go bad is heat not contaminants
@000302lf2 жыл бұрын
That's a pile of crap!!! That's what the filter is for!!!!!!!! I had an interesting professor in collage while earning my Degree in Automotive tech. One of his favorite sayings was, " parts left out cost no money and require no service, from the owner" meaning that you are forced to go to the dealer or a shop for service. The vast majority of contaminants come from inside the transmission via normal ware of clutch materials and bearings. Just change your fluid more often than the service schedule shows and most automatic transmissions will last well over the life of most ownership. My F150 had over 400,000 before it needed new clutches and seals. The bearings were still serviceable and the truck is still running with 550,000 on it. I sold it to the company I was working for at the time. I still see it all the time.

Theres a 2nd and equally important reason (dipstick) to check trans fluid. Smell and appearance to see if the fluid is burnt from heat ( towing)
@c.nacrelli75252 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have a dip stick because it has a sealed transmission. It was designed for you to not be able to check the levels to keep the transmission clean and free from debris. Take it to the dealer to have it serviced at 100k miles. Unless you suspect it's leaking fluid or something is wrong. Leave it alone.

ZF manufacture even went public and wonder why FCA keeps misinforms customers!! Over all is easy to do the service but time consuming!!

Whenever I level my truck, the front of the Trannie is still tilted upward. I put in about 5.5 quarts (estimated - I got a little sloppy with my pump) but was still concerned (since I had a gush of fluid from the fill plug when I started) so I topped it off the next day jacking up just the rear, putting in another 1/4 quart or so. I got the rear as high as I was comfortable with 3-4 inches or so, and the damn trans pan is STILL tilted. So is it the trans or the truck that has to be level? :/
@gerrymatheson40204 ай бұрын
This!! So many talk about making sure truck is on level ground. But a couple videos I've watched and a printout of procedure and protocols stress that it is not the truck that needs to be level but the transmission! This involves having the back end significantly higher... and you need the rear wheels in the air anyway so they can turn when you cycle thru the steps in the procedure. This involves actually putting a little level on or along the top of the pan where it seals to the body of the trans. If the truck is level the rear of the trans is lower and you'll lose fluid out the fill hole and end up low on fluid. Do your research... learn the right procedure and follow it carefully.

These engineers suck. Same as my 2007 Jeep and my 2012 Volvo XC60. No dip stick so don’t have oil dip sticks. My Volvo doesn’t even have a temperature gauge on the dash. That’s right I said they suck. People trust the stealership? Jesus your taking a chance with them. Most don’t deserve a two star out of five. Ask around your neighborhood about a good honest local mechanic with a good reputation that will take care of your vehicle.
@tonyolen138110 ай бұрын
The transmission is not level when the truck is level. The rear end of the truck needs to be jacked up at least 8-10 inches to make the transmission level when doing the fluid level check procedure. The procedure includes turning the traction control off, running the truck through all the gears for 5 seconds, starting with reverse for 5 sec with brake applied, drive with brake applied, letting off the brake and accelerating slowly until the trans shifts to 2nd gear, returning to idle, put in neutral and rev to 2000 rpm for 5 sec, return to park, THEN you can open the fluid plug and add or drain as needed. This whole procedure must be done with the trans temp between 86 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit. What a joke of a design.

ZF gearboxes are all like this
@GettysGarage2 жыл бұрын
it does seem that way!
@dasjuggernaut12 жыл бұрын
@@GettysGarage also, to answer your question as to why they do this, the answer is ZF gear boxes are very sensitive to the fluid, put the wrong fluid...... you will need a gearbox. Most of them are "life time" fill and you are not to change the fluid except when a repair is made. Also, ALWAYS get the fluid from the dealer. Yes, it is more expensive, but this will guarantee you are putting the correct fluid in and is still cheeper than a new gearbox.

Anyone smart enough to think they need to check the transmission fluid level knows about contaminants. This isn’t even check your dipstick 101. I agree with the other comment. They said seven minutes of my life wasted. The only thing useful was the ZF transmission being a sealed unit which I already suspected. That’s like on BMWs. I think they use a ZF transmission also. They’re very good transmission though. One of the best, but if you get a bad one, it’s pure crap.
