This big knob on the watch is the GPS anthena and it's placed this way so that when you run it's upward and keep a stronger signal. Good review, just got mine and it's awesome!

Hi Ginger, I have been using Ambit2s for about 3months now and I would give a 5/5 for your review. You nailed the pros and cons. I may have added no support of wifi or Bluetooth to the cons. I simply hate pulling my laptop out, looking for the cable and connecting all of that before I can look at my data. Beaming to a phone or directly to a router over to the internet would great. It seems that Sunnto wants you to stare at the movescount pop up screen every time...maybe they should add a commercial while waiting for the data to load, at least they would have a good excuse to do it slow. Keep the reviews coming, those are great

I've read lots of reviews of the Ambit2 and your review is about the best I've seen. I just purchased the Ambit2 Black having come from an old Garmin 305. I agree with pretty much all your comments, although the recent addition of automatically syncing from Movescount to Strava is a welcome addition. I love Movescount but hate the fact that you cannot rename your moves - this is a real pain in the arse. As for the watch - I love it! However I agree with you about the nub that sticks out and makes the watch move on the wrist. I'm constantly adjusting this. On long runs or swimming I don't notice it, but shorter runs or wearing it out and about I notice it a lot. The Garmin 305 was designed the same, but it was comfortably and stayed still. The one this I can't get my head around is the apps on the App Store. I'm pretty technical focused, but I must be missing something with the apps. Haven't got a clue how to work them. In fact some of the functionality the apps are proposing they do should be built into the firmware of the actual watch (like Virtual Pacer/Partner on the Garmin). All in all I'm pretty happy with the watch. I got a huge 30% discount; had I not then I wouldn't have bought it. Hope see more of your reviews....

Have owned and weared the Suunto Ambit2 Black EVERY day for the last 6 months. I absolutely love it!!! I finished my first Ironman with this watch, and although it took me almost 12 hours to get to the finishline, there was still about 30% batterylife left :D I personally like Movescount (haven't used Strava before, only Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks and Endomondo), and I also like the possibility to create my own apps (could be a customised interval counter :)).. I also like the build quality - Very rugged watch! So far it's only the slow uploading speed when uploading workouts, and the GPS receiver on the side of the watch, that I think they could improve. Btw I think the receiver sits on that side of the watch to ensure optimal GPS reception when running and wearing. If it was on the other side it would face towards the ground (when wearing on your left wrist). I 100% would recommend this watch, the Suunto Ambit2 !! ;)

The intro alone deserves a thumbs up! lol I'm definetly getting this watch now that it's almost 50% off in stores. This way I can time runs aswell as actually relaxing the mind when swimming instead of spending most of my time and mental energy in the pool on counting "fiftythree fathoms, fiftyfour fathoms.... errrm, fiftysix? Fathoms? The Phantom? The hell... where was I?".

I own Suunto Ambit (1st gen). I used to own a Suunto Core, but this one I love it. I actually like mine better than the ambit 2. Because of the bazel. I like it to be little raised than flat lol, and also I'm nowhere near Triathlon, I hike and a regular swimmer. SO I really no need for that feature. Mine comes with HR monitor which is also a great add on for suunto. BTW great video man...

I have been wearing the Ambit1 since December 2013. Comfort - I initially found it uncomfortable, now I sometimes forget I'm wearing it. Pricing - It's pricey, but a triathlete's bicycle and wet suit would make this seem cheap. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Connectivity - the Strava issue is solved. You still have to wait for it to download data when you connect it to your PC. It's a little frustrating, but I can deal with it. Overall - I love this piece of equipment. I just purchased the Ambit2 for my other half... she is excited to have one.

Good and honest review, thanks for uploading. The Suunto Ambit 2 has unique and very nice features but, everything considered, I don't find a really good reason to buy a gps watch. Almost every smarphones on the market have superior gps capabilities and very good apps and maps... So when I go trekking I will keep carrying my protrek 6000 for abc functionality on one wrist and an inexpensive cardio watch on the other wrist. The protrek is sturdy, solar powered, very confortable and...much more beautyful!

From a fellow ginger to another. I am a very over weight guy looking to lose 100kg and I have lost 35kg so far. I need a reliable heart rate monitor as I have a dodgy ticker. I bought a Garmin Forerunner 620 and I had it replaced and I'm about to send the replacement back too because the watch just doesn't pick up the HRM. I had to walk with my arm to my chest to get a reading. Anyway, I have been given three different choices from the site I buy from and they are; Garmin Forerunner 610 GPS Sports Watch with HRM Suunto Ambit 2 S GPS Watch With HRM Polar RCX3 GPS Sports Watch With HRM Like you, I love my data. I love seeing where I walked. How far etc. I like having speed, distance and timer as my defaults on my watch followed by heart rate on the next. Remember I'm only walking between 4km to 5km an hour on not so hilly footpaths. I've been watching your reviews and am at a loss. Can you help?

Having just had to deal with the pain of my ~10 year old trusty Forerunner 205 finally dying, I am on the look out for a new watch. Also given the absolute trash that Garmin Connect has become recently I've been tempted to try other options, and battery life has become a major issue for me as I've started to look at 24 hour races. Very, very tempted by this, though as you say quite pricey. Food for thought, thanks for a good review.

Have been using the Suunto Ambit for the past year in documenting Washington trails for BestoftheNW.org. It is far better than its predecessor the T6 in terms of battery life, gps connectivity and interaction with Movescount. I have to agree that Suunto does make it difficult to work with the data from Movescount they seem to be getting more restrictive with each update. Thanks for the review!

Hey man, great review, thank you very much. I was torn between the Suunto and the Garmin as i have a Suunto S7, yes i know it's a very old model, but the heart rate monitor kept malfunctioning. NO idea why,BUT after seeing the review you posted ill give Suunto another chance. One more thing....... if you have enough energy to talk to people while racing, you need to up the pace man! Could be the moustache, it definitely attracts attention.

Nice review I just got mine and I read that a guy put the female portion of velcro on the back side of the watch to help with cushioning and sweat , haven't tried it yet but thought that might help your problem with the discomfort of the watch by lifting it slightly above your wrist

I just got the Ambit 2. Had the Ambit one all customized on moves count but was unable to transfer my custom screens and sports onto the new "gear" on my moves count profile. Maybe I just couldn't figure it out.... there goes an hour I could have been running! PS I agree with the watch being difficult to look at but I guess the GPS works so well because it is always pointed at the sky unobstructed by your wrist.

Ambit1 and Ambit2 are more than just decent for cycling. I've used both here in the mountains of western NC. They hold to the GPS and track much better compared to the Garmin 500 and 810. Both of the Ambit's aren't as accurate as far as elevation gain, other than that, I prefer the Ambit2 over Garmin any day. I had the Garmin 810 crash on me a few times, right in the middle of 60+ miles rides. Ambit1 and Ambit2 have never crashed. I think your dislikes were a bit petty for the Ambit2, I do agree about the App's though. Way too much garbage to pick through now. The Ambit2 is still far from perfect, but so far it's the best I've found.
@TheGingerRunner11 жыл бұрын
I ride with the Garmin 500 (multiple centuries and double centuries, not to mention the thousands of miles training) and haven't had a SINGLE problem with the device. The huge benefit of the 500 over an Ambit are the number of data fields you can display simultaneously. That's a HUGE win over something wrist mounted that displays 3 pieces of data MAX at a time on a bike. And as for thinking my dislikes are petty, that's fair. They are problems to ME so it's my job to let YOU, the consumer, know about them and make your own decision. I wish you the best of luck using one of these as your primary form of tracking on a bike. I consider this watch an adventure watch, and if your adventure takes you on two wheels, so be it.

Epic moustache, great review - I agree with almost everything except for accuracy. Mine seems to be almost spot on - during marathons I regularly get around 42.5 km reading instead of 42.195 km which is less than 1% difference. Can't really judge the accuracy on ultramarathons as the length of the course is always only approximation. Anyways - it's a beast - expensive but worth it. For me the selling point is the map / route feature which let's you upload a map of the course you're going to take and at any moment you can check where you are and whether you've gone off the track. Saves a lot of time on the trail as you almost never have to take out the traditional map and wonder "where the hell am I right now?" Waiting for the Nao review :)
@TheGingerRunner11 жыл бұрын
Right, it's weird. Also know that a marathon is in a city and most likely has easier access to more satellites (unless it's a trail marathon) and therefore more chances of being accurate as opposed to deep in the wilderness. As I mentioned, spot-on during the cuyamaca 100k (I mean, reading 62.1 miles at the finish is DAMN close). During my recent Cactus To Clouds adventure, all my friends' garmin watches were reading upwards of 2+ miles MORE than my suunto! When they uploaded the file, it corrected back DOWN a few miles w/ auto-GPS on Strava, but stayed higher uploading to garmin connect. My Suunto still wasn't close and when I looked at the track on Movescount, it had straight lines all over the place where it would drop signal for short bursts of time. Really strange. But overall for road-type races where you won't lose satellite signal at all, it's great.

HI, i'am choosing a GPS watch to track my running, cycling and crossfit workouts, is the Ambit2 S a good choise today over the competion on the same price tag (Ambit2 S in super sale!)? Some units now feature Optical HR, but can strugle in some cases, i have this ones in mind: - Polar M400 + H7 Band - TomTom Runner 2 Cardio (OHR) - Garmin Forerunner 220 + HR Band - Suunto Ambit2 S + HR Band - Garmin Forerunner 225 (HR) I am almost certain that the Ambit2S is the one, but is the only one that use ANT+ as base tech. My main concern is buying a unit that is technologicaly outdated! Help!

Hey Ethan, I wanted to ask you about your preferences in shoe cushioning. I know you rotate your shoes but do you look for a certain amount and kind of cushioning in your shoes. Do you prefer more in the forefoot or heel? Never heard you discuss this topic in any of your videos and this kind of stuff is always mentioned in shoe reviews. I'd like to hear your take on it. Maybe you can do a running topics series of videos where you talk about your take on different aspects of running. I think it would be very interesting as you've always portrayed yourself as a regular runner and noobs like me are curious about what more experienced runners think. Have a great weekend.

The price is justified because of (1) quick satellite acquisition, (2) the watch doesn't fall off (hello, Garmin 610), (3) GOOD and easy firmware updates (Garmin, are you listening?) and (4) battery life. I don't like the apps (mostly junk) and I don't like the small typeface used on the watch's large face. Also, the lap button is not in an intuitive position. I also don't mind the "nub", and frequently wear the Suunto while wearing a suit. I can keep it on my wrist all week and then put a 2+ hour run in without worrying about the battery (Garmin, are you listening?).

The "nub", while you may prefer it to be on the other side of the watch, is on the best side for GPS reception. With it to the inside of your wrist, it's almost always pointing to the sky.
@TheGingerRunner10 жыл бұрын
yes, but why not include it in the strap so it flexes at the strap joint? or on the side of the watch? or IN the watch? the logic of pointing it to the sky is form dependant and not always true, unfortunately. Other watches are able to track accurately without the nub and I've lost signal w/ the ambit2 before so there has to be a better solution. hmmmm
@BuckRogers249110 жыл бұрын
***** I'd venture a guess that electronics in a flexy strap would degrade in reliability after a while. Why not in the watch? Maybe Suunto tested and found better reception with it as a semi separate piece of the body (speculation there). Granted, I haven't taken my Ambit3 in deep covered woods, but all the uses so far it's been very accurate. Good thing there's lots of choices for runners.

Looking for an upgrage in watches. Need help since most shops are unfamiliar with the watches. The watches that I am interested in are the Ambit, Ambit2, and the Polar v800. I want the altimeter/barometer feature for the ascent/decent ability to train for my races. Also I need to be able to plan out my runs provided by my coach which are very detailed. I think the software from polar allows you too but really unfamilar with Movescount. I created a movescount account and could not find the ability to create specific workouts (very basic workout creator). It looks like the Ambit is quite large and my wrists are small too. The GPS beacon is on that side so that it always faces up when you have it on your wrist
@TheGingerRunner11 жыл бұрын
I am referring to them moving it to the other side of the watch face (think 12 o'clock) so it aims away from the body. That would keep the rotation of the watch face TOWARDS our eyes as opposed to away, avoiding having to over-rotate the wrist.
@EvanDaviesOutdoors11 жыл бұрын
***** I agree it's definitely a bit in the way when you want to glance at it quickly. But if you think about how you hold your arm while running (kind of sideways) you always have six o'clock pointing upwards, towards the satellites. I don't know if this actually makes a difference or if that's why Suunto put it there but it's what I have been led to believe

For watch: If you carry your phone on you, there are TONS of free apps that track you through GPS (if you have a smartphone/iphone). That's a quick-fix. I know Nike, Garmin, Suunto, Polar, Timex and Soleus all make cheaper versions too. I ran for years with the Garmin Forerunner 110 and loved it. Never failed. The strap ended up breaking so I had to get a new upgrade. For shoes: Best bet is to go to you local running store and be professionally fitted. Also, know in advance what sort of runner you are or what sort of form you're working on/towards. I started not knowing anything, but soon learned that a forefoot/midfoot strike was what I wanted in a shoe. When you get fitted, try on EVERYTHING and feel whats comfortable for YOU, not always what the store tries to push on you. Good luck!

I have the ambit 2 s and the ambit 2. I have had the top of the line garmins and like the Suunto watches much better.

I recently purchased the R on sale. Not very pleased with it so far. My main gripes are the battery life and the discrepancies in data that uploads to Strava. The battery life is no where near what is advertised. Maybe I have a bad watch but I recently had it set for 12 hour battery time and it only lasted 8:14 (without any pausing and auto pause turned off). I guess the only good thing that came from that was i did notice that it turns the gps off at 3% and allows you to use the clock function at that point. Secondly the data that uploads to Strava never matches. They even advertise on the packaging that data automatically uploads to Strava. Why promote this if it raises questions about the quality/accuracy of the product? I was told it was due to them using different algorithms...well which algorithm is correct? My rating for the R would be closer to 10/20.

Rob Waeger That battery life is way off. I'd suspect a bad watch. And the data is ALWAYS screwy with Strava. Strava uses Google maps accountability as opposed to GPS based accuracy. However, my discrepancies are very rarely off on mileage. It's more elevation/calories. Again, perhaps a bad watch. Utilize the warranty.

My Gym teacher once said "the only running you guys do is running from the cops!!!" Probably a true statement. But if I had this watch I would have also run for pleasure.

I really am considering getting a Garmin forerunner 110. Any thoughts?

Used that watch for YEARS. Seriously. Only reason I retired it was because the strap broke and it can't be replaced. I believe they have the 220 and 620 dropping VERY soon, so you might be able to get older models on sale or you can get one of the fancy new ones!

Thanks you for convincing me NOT to get this watch. For the price, it should have vibration alerts, smoother and faster upload of data to Move site, better wrist ergonomics, etc. Good watch, should be better.

Having had a couple of suunto's- the straps are replaceable, but if yours breaks after they discontinue it, expect to have to eventually source some shop in Japan / Mongolia / wherever which charges 60 bucks for the strap, 40+ bucks for shipping, and then you decide it's less hassle to watch a review for an Ambit 2, then go buy one :/ These guys are like drug dealers... but it's such a good drug!

I am dissatisfied with my suunto ambit because of the bracelet. the watch is very good, plus the bracelet is weak, it breaks easily and has poor durability I was very sad when the bracelet comersou to have cracks and soon came to break

I'm surprised accuracy was a concern. My Garmin 405 sucks at altitude calculation, not that I'm ever in mountains, and I was expecting altitude to be a strong point of Suunto. It uses some sort of barometric (?) method and many big time mountain racers use the watch so I expected it was very accurate. Maybe Suunto is accurate and Garmin isn't? Who's to know.

Honestly, the discrepancies between what my friend's watches show, what online GPS correction shows, and my watch are all different. I figure it's a close enough estimate that I'm ok. As for elevation gain/loss, that's been pretty spot-on, and I think THAT'S probably what most mountain racers look at more often, at least that's what I focus on more.

Oh also it says on Movescoount that you can link your movescount profile to your strava account for automatic uploading of data. Here's the link, hold your mouse over the Strava icon. www.movescount.com/connect Hope that helps out.
