Valencia was underrated (CL final in 2000 and 2001, 2004 UEFA Cup, La Liga in 2002 and 2004), but during the same period (2000-2004), Barcelona didn't win anything. They won the Liga in 1999, and they had to wait 2005 to win it again, and 2006 to win the CL with Eto'o, Giuly, Deco and Ronaldinho. In the early 2000's, despite they had some big players like Rivaldo, the Blaugranas level was awful. They had too much players who won titles with Ajax but weren't at their best level anymore (Kluivert, F. And R. De Boer, Bogarde, Litmanen...). Moreover, Xavi and Iniesta were too young at this time. In Europe, they were always trashed by the other teams. And in La Liga, Real Madrid bought Figo and was stronger than Barcelona. At this time, Valencia, Deportivo La Coruña and Madrid were fighting for their league. Barcelona was a serious rival, but they always used to lose. It was even pathetic.

Valencia were an incredible side but if Luis Figo was playing this leg - they would of ultimately loss this tie. He played the second leg unfit and Barca won that leg thanks to his influence and assist. Rivaldo was a better player than Figo but not in 99/00 and he was not as consistent imo. Figo always showed up in the big games too. I think Figo was a bit unlucky the following season too - Casillas made a howler in the semis against Bayern and that ultimately cost Real the CL. Again Figo was the best player of the tournament. In that sense he's always been a bit unlucky. He was far more dangerous and consistent in the CL than Zidane but he got some ill fortune - whereas Zidane's volley in 02 masked his shortcomings as player.
