Alex, Hask, and Tins are joined by Dr. Brett Robinson, former Australian Wallaby and front-runner to be the next Chair of World Rugby. With his sons as the motivators for his unexpected appearance on GBR, Brett reveals his path to candidacy, what sparked his decision to lead, and why he believes his experience in both business and player safety makes him the right man to lead World Rugby. The GBR team brings the heat on modernising the game.
But to begin, we are honoured to unveil the new British & Irish Lions shirt for their tour of Australia in 2025.

As a Kiwi, Ive always loved this show and its English take on the game we love. Brett seems like a very smart business guy who loves his rugby and has some big $$$ issues to handle. Hask and Tins raise good points about how to market the game, yet Brett is right. We have to look after players safety (an idea: brutal on the field, cuddly with Mum, and we've got Drs too!) Good work!

I think a major part of growing the game especially for a younger audience is the Gaming Console side of things there is currently a rugby union game coming soon “RUGBY 25” which if this was advertised during International breaks on tv adverts and podcasts more will buy or play it and do what FIFA has been doing for younger football audiences by showing off the game in other ways

Rugby needs a strong foundation in the clubs with youth programs. That’s where you create and nurture the stars of the future, their supporters, and enthusiastic spectators. It can’t always be about the professionals at the top of the pyramid. World Rugby has forgotten that. The kids who get involved, become passionate rugby enthusiasts, and carry that passion for life are the backbone of the international game. Players, coaches, officials and administrators have to have that passion. Without it, you just have people going through the motions. There are already far too many of them.

Indeed. My u11 played a school last week, they didn’t have enough boys to play because 10 moms (and dads) decided to take their boys out of contact rugby due to the ‘dangers’. Those boys are now playing netball. Some of the girls couldn’t get into the netball team and is now playing rugby 😮😮 I think the other problem is the schools that do play rugby is mostly private schools and I do worry about the fact that we’re all about encouragement. Don’t get me wrong we need to encourage but we also need to lay down expectations. My u13 son’s school team were losing 8-1 at half time, no one interested in tackling. The coaches 1/2 time talk?? “Well done lads, keep it up” It’s a massive thing in the UK - we never needed motivation to play rugby hard (but fair) be it the A, B,C etc teams. It was expected and you had your head in the game. I just don’t see any ‘anger’ or ‘intent’ in a lot of what the minis/youths do in rugby here.

In relation to Dr Brett I think people need to understand the difference between minimising risks and maximising safety. Minimising risks is taking the collisions out of rugby - only allow tackles around the waist, no more pushing in the scrums for example, whereas maximising safety is keeping all the elements that we love about rugby but just make that as safe as possible with improved medical monitoring and support e.g. fancy mouthguard, return to play protocols etc. A difficult balance to find.

Rugby is losing ground to American Football on its own home turf. The NFL is playing games in Europe and as I have experienced first hand (I teach in Germany), invests a lot of money in order to bring the sport to school children. They sponsor school flag football programs in order to get children hooked on football at an early age. If I compare that to most Rugby clubs in my area, they seldom have touch rugby teams which makes it harder to get children involved early. Also, this means that from a certain age, players just drop out of the sport because they do not want to tackle/be tackled anymore. In the end, players get into Rugby comparatively late at 10-12 and often drop out again after having graduated from high school, resulting in rugby not really having any footprint in the German sports landscape. I used to study in Coventry and went to Wasps home games and I loved it. However, there are things holding professional rugby back, I think. Firstly, the rules of Rugby Union are very extensive and rather complicated. However, the bigger problem is something else and that is, for lack of a better word, ‘name recognition‘. Currently, the NFL is so succesful and popular in Europe and a big reason why is that teams play in big stadiums and, more importantly, big cities. Would Europeans be as interested in the NFL if games were played between Lansing and Lubbock, Albany and Spokane or Alexandria and Akron, rather than between Detroit and Dallas, New York and Seattle or Washington and Cleveland? What I mean is that rugby would thrive more if it had a franchise system with teams playing in bigger cities. For some reason, Bristol vs. Manchester sounds better and ‘more attractive‘, at least to me, than Bath vs. Sale. Lastly, I think rugby would benefit from both codes reuniting and forming a hybrid form of both codes. No matter what people say, in the end it is the same sport and public interest is not big enough to have two forms of what is, at least historically, the same sport. Having watched this video, I am convinced this will not happen. However, I am afraid this will only make it easier for American football to pass rugby by in terms of active participation making it the most popular endzone sport in Europe. I hope I am wrong but I think the future of rugby looks much bleaker than these gentlemen let on in this video.

There is also far too much rugga being played...so if you want to improve player safety, rather apply the less is more principle. Currently its a war zone with the amount of injuries we see week in week out, its out of control.

Why not reduce subs Have 8 available but you can only do 5 subs. This will increase the attrition of the game, open it up and make the management think in real time about who comes on the field. Also this will reduce the gladiator collision and make people fitter for 80 minutes and think more on their feet

You're operating under several false assumptions... 1. The two Springbok forwards who routinely play the full 80mins are Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph Du Toit...so having to play a full 80mins doesn't lead to smaller players with smaller collisions. 2. The Springboks now, with bomb squad and all, play a far more expansive game than they did in 2007, when they played 10-man rugby under Jake White and hardly used their bench at all.

They should all be allowed to tinker with rules that suit the peoples interests in that country without hinderance from World Rugby. Each country has to commit to international windows where tests are played under agreed international laws and top tier pro Rugby cannot be allowed to happen at the same time. Rugby Union has great playing numbers they just don't know how to run pro comps for entertainment that generate money other than the World Cup which is great. The club comps need to learn the entertainment game fast or the game will die at a pro entertainment level & we will all be left sadly watching the NRL every week.

@@johnnievanderwalt6910 I see your point but you cannot compare combat sports and Rugby (in the way you mean it). The whole purpose of combat sports is to hurt people. You purposely look to KO, choke or massively hurt somebody in order to win. In Rugby, those things are a byproduct of the physicality of the sport. Would you like somebody to neck roll you in such a way that would can no longer walk again? Would you like to be hit mid-air, land on your neck and be on a wheelchair your entire life? Probably no. Therefore, you can bring those situations to the minimum and make it "as safe as possible" which is not the same as "making it safe". Injury and contact will always be there. One last word from me, then I'm done. You won't ever globalise rugby, ever. Is NFL or NBA globalised? Not really. Rugby is an alpha-male sport, and thus the appeal of the game is limited to certain personality types. This contrasts with football, the global game...due to its refined physicality, its way more accessible to a wider range of people. Rugby is for the precious few who understand what happens at the base of a ruck for instance...you'll never be able to explain it to some landscaper in California, for instance. Let's keep the game sacred.

Utter nonsense. If managed properly the sport will be globalized. But the older unions want to retain their pre-eminence at the expense of the up & coming teams many which would have greater resources in the long run. Nobody else thinks that is a good idea. Speaks about safety but going to pass 20min card
@JohnM-yl7ly
@JohnM-yl7ly 6 күн бұрын
It is much better - 20 minutes, not back on the field and a suspension is plenty to drive behaviour (if it does at all) - plus you can still get sent off for extreme foul play. The mistakes that get a red card now can ruin the game and I don't want to pay good money to watch 14 on 15.

The jersey is rotten looking. The last ones is miles better. If it was brighter shade of red then maybe.

Rugby is not a product. Please leave the game to the players, coaches and fans. Officials, refs and corporates need to take a huge step back. Money, bureaucracy and bad losers have no place between four white lines. Australia, and a few others need to pull up their socks and start fixing their game, and their players. Stop focusing on rugby politics please.

World Rugby needs to be made a democratic organization firstly. How is it that South America & Europe the two fastest growing regions for union won't get a seat on the Executive Committee because they supported Benazzi ? Why is it many Tier 2's don't even get a say in the direction the sport is going. It's still an old boys club. Don't expect much change from Robinson another dinosaur like Beaumont.

SA here. Rugby is a game of speed, power and violence. Australians are obsessed with rugby league and woke…this man is going to dilute and ruin rugby. World Rugby runs a big risk of losing traditional rugby countries because they want to grow the game in Panama It’s almost impossible to tackle a player running in a crouched position. People are being carded for doing really great tackles

@@B-tr9kzso-called "rugby" leaugue" has got nothing to with rugby; it is a totally different game. Perhaps "rugby" leaugue should be called 5CBK; 5 crash balls and a kick; and surprisingly, the pattern repeats itself; another 5 crash balls and a kick; and again; and again. So called rugby league is for players who are too dumb to play rugby.

There are more registered soccer players in NZ than rugby union players. And looking at the entry of an Auckland team into the trans-Tasman soccer competition, most of the spectators at Mt Smart Stadium looked like white middle-class former politically neutral right wing Christian heterosexual rugby union followers.

Now that the northern hemisphere teams are good, let's have a southern hemisphere type lions team your England or France or whatever ,and also a northern hemisphere team vs southern hemisphere team match every two years, and also the winner of super rugby plays the winners of your comp winners. As an Allblacks fan I love when we play England not because I hate the team it's coz I hate those cocky media people(some), but that's what gets me emotionally invested in the game. Ireland are the same I can't stand their (we the best) attitude so again that makes me emotionally invested. It's getting the fans emotionally invested by creating a dislike for the other team because winning against them is so sweeeeeeeeet

What does that do for growing the sport exactly ? Tier 2's need to be brought up to speed as soon as possible & part of that is exposing them to T1s on a more regular basis. Union is run by an Anglophone cabal that in some cases wants a return to the 1900s.
