Me and my mates used to pick potatoes as young lads back in the 70s and it was exactly like this. we'd get picked up in a van early in the morning and transported to what ever farm we were going to work at that day. You'd be assigned a row behind the tractor and pick the length of the field. Me and my mates used to pick a double row, which meant we got twice the daily rate but had to do twice the work. By the end of the day you'd be shattered with an aching back but you'd feel inches taller (because of the amount of mud stuck to the bottom of your boots :) You could take a couple of shopping bags full of spuds home each day if you wanted them, which I did and gave them to my mum and auntie. For a few weeks after the picking season, I couldn't look at a potato never mind eat one. 🥔😁

I mean, it also helps that he is a very very rich man and Amazon was also likely footing the bill for alot of it. The avg farmer doesn't have the luxury of millions of dollars (and another very high paying job) to fall back on if things don't work. If he was an actual farmer trying to do it for a living he would have failed miserably.

@@AD-df5tm That is the point he makes a few times throughout the show. Farmers have it hard in Britain due to bureaucratic restrictions and not enough subsidies that help them stay afloat, yet they are expected to provide a huge part of Britain’s food supply, and it’s just an endless cycle of diminishing returns for a lot of people. I think that’s why Clarkson was the NFU’s Farming Champion of 2021, because he brought this fact to light for a lot of people.

Because many farms in America are purposebuilt land, land thats mostly flat already being made to be perfectly flat and able to be easily farmed with equipment. As youve seen in this series, British farms are older than the majority of countries alive. The land is what it is. The land, the roads, the way of farming is not easy for machines and for alot of things its still easier to use people instead of equipment.
@colamity_5000
@colamity_5000 14 күн бұрын
@@APRCraigit’s more a matter of scale. If I had to guess the average acreage of a European farm is much lower. At scale tho, they obviously have very similar farm equipment, I know cuz I’ve bought used tractors imported from Europe. Spud farming for example must be done at scale with modern equipment to be economically viable, anyone doing it manually isn’t making money or at least not much: it’d be more of a hobby. Spud harvesters tho are very rare pieces of equipment and farms that do it are very specialized.

I have a farm in the USA. We sometimes do something similar. Sometimes people take produce and leave notes, saying they have no money but will bring some by when they do. Often times they really do come back, up the farm proper to hand deliver it. I just refuse the money if they turn up like that. If a person is so desperate to eat they need to do that, whats a few cents or dollars to me? I've never had to skip meals, they often do in order to get a 3$ pair of used shoes for a kid.

I sold a dozen pumpkins, watermelons, dozens of spuds, 50 broccoli and 60 cabbages at a third the price as our local tesco, i made a net profit of £320. Seeds only cost £2 each. Sold out on the first day. Used the money to buy a few liquid fertilizer drums, tossed in weeds and gras and food, its turned to sludge which i've mixed in the soil for this year. Got seeds from last years harvest to replant this year. Start in small pots then transfer them to the soil once they've taken. I'll do half price of Tesco this year and on a full harvest, im looking at £700 if i get more spuds this time (half were rotten)

Naturally, we also have our version of this song in Hungary: ,,16 tonna fekete szén 16 tonnát raksz és Mennyi a bér? Meghalni kéne De nem lehet A vállalat nem engedi A lelkemet"" ,,16 tons of black coal Load 16 tons and how much is the salary? I should die, but cannot The company will not allow that"

How do you become a millionaire running a hobby farm? Start off with $10m and run the farm until you have $1m left... ps. As a teenager I worked weekends at a market garden/roadside shop and aside from stealing 'green' from the nearby national park for use by the flower shop part of the business, one of the more delightful tasks was 'rebagging' potatoes - ie. opening up old bags of potatoes, throwing out the ones that had started to rot and were disgusting, washing off the remaining 'good' potatoes and putting the 'good' potatoes into new bags to be sold... (another favourite task was bending over all day in the hot Australian summer weeding the marigold field -- guaranteed to give you the most incredible headache and a backache) A great way to earn 60c an hour (and the bus fare to and from 'work' was around 40c each way!)

A mix of organic non gmo beetroot to strawberry's, soft fruit, veg, a move away from industrial synthetic "fertilizers" your shop would need a massive car park.

Well his options were either very limited or very little mass purchases (not enough time) or his honesty box (not enough traffic). Makes enough sense.

When it comes to figuring out potato farming, you'd need Matt Damon.
