When you try to avoid, a 2 front War, by going into a 2 front War.
@josephglatz25

Well, they weren't trying to avoid it, they didn't think they could. They wanted to turn it into a 1 front war as quickly as possible. Russia was seen as too big to knock out of the fight in a hurry. Too much land, too deep a pool of manpower. So, they went after France. But it wasn't just a two front war, it was something like 11 different fronts all spinning away at its peak.

You are thinking of the royals in a very nationalistic way; but royals did not think that way. We tend to think that the British Royals are ... "British" and Russians Tsars are "Russian". But no. The House of Windsor, the current British Royal house was originally called House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha with titles and holdings in Germany. After the war broke out, the house basically issue a decree to change its name of House of Windsor, and renounce the holdings in Germany. The Russian royals used to speak German. Catherine the Great was born somewhere in Germany. All the royalties are related to each other since once you are at that level it made sense to marry other royals to extend your powers.

I don't know if you know this or not but the reason why Jean Jaures's assassination shocked the world wasn't because he was popular, in fact quite the contrary, Jaures was very unpopular in France. The reason why his assassination shocked France was because his assassin, Raoul Villain (what an ironic name), was acquitted despite all the evidence showing he did the killing. What happened to Raoul? Well no one knows however after WW1 he fled to Spain and was ironically killed by the Italian army during the Spanish Civil War who mistaken ed him for a communist.

A lot of History teachers have to teach with a hand tied behind their back. They have to follow curriculums, set dates, etc.. Not really fair to compare a guy making a video with all the time in the world, to a teacher who has limited time, government and adminisstration regulations breathing down his back and telling him what to do, and dealing with kids who won't listen are being disruptive.

Incredible channel guys. I'm a WWI-WWII enthusiast, and I'm now like a kid in a candy store! However, I have a suggestion to make. In the map that is in the background, it would be great if you could "after effect" the state of every country as you speak, like showing where troops are advancing, and lands conquered, .. etc. Because just as the war began, France had already lost a couple towns in their territory to germans, and it would be great to be visually updated as the war unfolds. Thank you guys for the effort ! You have my vote on Webby !

The Great War I think a movie about people picking lice out of rat meat and dying miserably in trenches by the thousands, in a 100 year old war, with no romantic sub-plot and no great action beats, adapted from a book that opens by saying it's not a book about heroism, but about lives shattered by war, with a bunch of German actors, and ends with pretty much all the main characters dying doesn't scream "Box office appeal". You can imagine the comment cards from test audiences saying the movie's a bummer despite the book being so popular. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your videos, Indiana.

Amazing idea! Watched all episodes one after the other!! Some suggestions though: 1. The maps on this video were REALLY useful to keep track of everything but they should appear more often. Or side to side with the rest of the images and videos. 2. Name, nationality and role of every person could be written each time next to their picture. 3. You should do product placement and advertising of products of that time. Would be super funny! Or maybe products we use today with early century aesthetic. More income for you guys to help support the channel and keep the series up!

What about alsace-lorraine? That was the very reason why France had a lot of nationalism and willing of war against Germany. It's too important to be left out.

Heard once a wise quote which was from British officer in end of WW1. It was something like "victors wanted to humiliate the losers and doing so poison the future of the world" That's exactly how it is, Entente Powers. Any guess who caused WW2?

The proximate cause was Austro- Hungarians eyeing off Serbia - there was no evidence of official involvement in the plot to kill Ferdinand, although there was understandably personality support in Serbia, given the AH recording abuse of Serbs. The real, underlying causes were German failure to limit Austria-Hungary and it's flagrant breach of the most basic principles of international law by invading Belgium with no justification.

+The Great War I just found this channel through the collaboration video with History Buffs. You remind me of my favorite history teacher! Passionate about history and someone who wants to instruct as many as possible on the accuracy of the "forgotten war". I have subscribed, good sir, please keep up the great work!

Hello; I've just started watching, having ben directed to this channel from reddit.com. I've become interested in the great war since I started playing "battlefield 1", and initially wanted to understand the events causing the start of the war. But the more I read, the more questions I have! So far, I am enjoying these videos. I also want to thank you for taking the time and effort to provide accurate subtitles; one of the downfalls of youtube is often the lack of such an important addition. There is a whole heap of excellent content out there which the deaf and hard of hearing community have difficulty accessing. Thanks for making this an accessible channel for those people too!

Please don’t say England when referring to Britain in this sense. It is ignoring the sacrifice made by those soldiers from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Not to mention the wider empire which at the time covered a quarter of the globe and soldiers from all reaches of it signed up and some from each part inevitably paid the ultimate price.

I've only just discovered and subscribed to this channel. Man, I really wish that when I was doing my O-Levels in Modern History 1870-1914 (not that feels modern any more ... ) we'd had access to these sorts of resources. I love history presented like this where context is given over a deluge of just dates and places. I've a *lot* of catch-up to do on this channel.
