This was terrific!!! I’ve overwatered, over fed, done everything wrong. Wish I had watched this before having to clip dead leaves off. I am left with a large stem and four leaves. Not sure it will make it. All plants do not need same care, like all people do not need same- just love and encouragement.

I just bought a yucca cane plant ( i named him Mr. Yuc ) and I am curious should I be re-potting it in a pot right away or should i be waiting a little while? and when i do re-pot it how large of a pot should i use? (i am really glad i got a yucca i am trying to teach myself how to not kill plants and i think this is a good step forward)

I would wait a bit. When you buy a plant and then bring it back to your home the change in scenery, humidity, light, and temperature can be a lot to adjust to. It can stress a plant out. Not to mention watering too. You'll no doubt have a different watering schedule than some of these big box stores. Most of those places try and water just about every plant they have practically every day. Consequently, you should only water your yucca once the soil has dried out COMPLETELY. Don't forget this is a desert dweller so they can go extended periods without water. You want to water profusely yet infrequently. If you aren't sure if you need to water, stick your finger down in the soil and see if you feel any moisture at all. If you do, wait a bit. After waiting a month or two you should be fine to repot. Again this is a desert dweller so they don't need a bunch of new soil and a bunch of new nutrients in with the soil or with fertilizer. Honestly, they enjoy being a little root bound so if you wanted to wait you could wait a year or two to repot. I kept mine in the same container it came from the store in for three or more years. Now if you want to repot that's fine. Just don't get too large of a pot. At most you shouldn't go up more than two inches. If it's in a six-inch plastic pot don't get larger than an eight-inch pot. Make sure it has plenty of drainage holes in the bottom of the pot too. Honestly, terra cotta would be the best because it's porous and will help wick water away from the roots which is great for a desert-dwelling plant like this one. I would only use soil that's made for cacti and succulents too.

Ive got the same problem with a 6 foot yucca outside growing in a ceramic pot. The roots have worked their way into the cement flooring and i cant pull the pot free. The yucca needs repotting as its bent in half but the whole plant looks healthy otherwise. Which compost did you use with sand and perlite as I couldnt quite see on the packet but Im sure it wasnt a multi purpose compost and lastly what fertilizer do you use????

Hi. We live in North Carolina and we have 2 of these plants and have them both in big pots. We keep them outside under our patio and kerp them in a small greenhouse in the winter. They have grown so much that if we have much wind at all they get turned over because they are so tall. We were wanting to plant them outside in our rock bed but not sure if they will make it in the winter months. Any suggestions?

Very informative video ! Thank you. My indoor Yuca plant is growing so fast the branches are hiding the trunks. I would like to expose the trunks more. How would you recommend dealing with thinning out the greenery without harming the plant ? I think this thinning would give the plant more interest. More character.

Yes, I agree. Take you some sharpened, sanitized pruning shears or scissors, and cut flush against the stem with cutting the stem. If you find you accidentally nick the stem/trunk and you worry it's a decent opening to let in infection, or rot, or pests just use cinnamon to cover the cut. 100% cinnamon is a natural antibiotic and will keep all that from entering your yucca and potentially causing a plethora of problems. I wouldn't remove more than a quarter of the leaves. Good luck!

Great video. Do you have any suggestions for my yucca. I watered it about 2 weeks ago and the soil just won’t dry. It’s the standard potting mix that I bought it in. It has pores in the container to allow for drainage. It just won’t dry and I’m concerned for root rot

I had the same problem and I have found that clay pots dry out faster and my plastic pots were holding in the moisture. Also, I tried Miracle Grow Cactus and Succulent mix soil and I nearly killed off all my succulents because it NEVER dried out. Even in clay and peat pots.

My yucca is struggling. I see a lot of gnats on the yellow sticky trap. I got it 3 months ago and the leaves are turning yellow and brown. Some are spotted and most have a powdery white thing on them. It has 3 stalks and the smallest one has only about 7 leaves while the tallest stalks inside leaves are all dying turning brown.

Oh yes, I hear this a lot! lol. At most I give mine 3-4 cups of water about every two weeks or so. You want to water it enough that the excess water runs out the bottom, and empty the saucer underneath after 20 minutes. Then wait till the substrate dries out almost completely before you water again. They're from the desert so they can go a good while without water, just don't do it to them every time. Good luck with the fungus gnats. There used to be a killer product out there that cut down on aphids and fungus gnats like no other product I know. Unfortunately Monsanto bought the company out and they stopped making it. You may be able to find some on eBay though. It's called gnat nix. Plant prudently!

You could throw in a little perlite but miracle grow does a great job of making their soil pretty porous and on point. In fact depending on how large your plant is you should definitely throw in about a quarter or so of some reputable gardening soil for added heft. Potting soil would be too loose. Mine was so large I had to add in more gardening soil too, because he started leaning. He's fine now though lol. Putting on some mass!

Honestly, I do. The glue is typically a water solvent so if you want to keep the rocks that are glued down just hand wash them in the sink with some soap and warm water. You may need a screwdriver or butter knife or hammer to help break up the glue and rocks. And don't be surprised if the glue has gone deep into the soil.

WOW Justin, your Yucca Cane looks great!! I bought my Yucca Cane and repotted it on Earth Day, but after seeing how many roots yours had compared to mine kind of surprised me. My root ball was really small, slightly smaller than the size of a baseball, and my Yucca is about half the size of your Yucca. I guess I just thought there would be more roots LOL but maybe my Yucca is still a baby? I replanted it in a slightly larger New Mexico pot so I hope I didn't make a mistake on the size of that. It seems to be doing just fine tho. None of the leaves are yellow or brown thankfully, but I can't wait till it has leaves like yours. Could you do an update video once your Yucca has gotten used to his new pot and just show us how much the correct amount of water to use is?

So I assume you are talking about the Dracaena fragrans? This is a completely different plant and needs fairly different caring requirements. This plant is from the tropics of Africa while the yucca is around the more desert, and semi tropics of Southern Mexico and Guatemala. The established yucca can take brighter light than the corn plant and the yucca needs less water and less fertilizer. They both like a moderate amount of humidity. I love love love the corn plant especially the larger ones. Make sure you clean the leaves with four parts warm water to one part lemon juice and a wash cloth when they get dusty. This well help them with photosynthesis and breathing too.

They're like us and they often crave some greens to digest. Try and give her some healthy plants to chew on. Like your catnip, cat thyme, cut grass, lemongrass, rosemary, oat grass, and licorice root is a good one too. Also certain flowers they do enjoy if you have any outside cats like I do they also like echinacea, zinnias, marigolds that could lure them to a certain area of the yard. There's also a spray you can purchase on Amazon called cat mace that you can spray on certain plants and it deters them. All it is is the urine of a predator cat that keeps them away from just the smell. Cats also don't enjoy strong citrus scents, so you could chop up a couple of oranges and place them around the house. Or if it's outside they don't like lavender, rue, coleus, or pennyroyal if you want to plant any of those to deter. My fiance's cousin uses strategically placed pieces of aluminum foil and/or double-sided tape to keep her cats off shelves and aquariums, etc. in the house. You could go that route too, they don't like stepping on either one.
