There are so many different types of lime trees out there. How do you pick with certainty the best one for your situation? Lime trees are fairly easy to take care of. In the spring and summertime you can practically sit them out in your yard and let them do their own thing, provided you monitor their water consumption. Wow! I thought I would watch the video and might pick up a tip for my key lime tree. I have a key lime tree planted in my backyard and it’s about three feet tall. I live in Southwest Florida. I couldn’t believe how long this video was and the amount of information I learned. It’s not my fault this tree hasn’t died, but I’m anxious to apply what I’ve learned in this video. Thanks

I've grown Key Lime trees from seeds several times but when they get too big I have to let them die *Sad* So I'm hoping your advice will help me keep one smaller & longer! I almost let it die this winter from lack of water; it dropped a lot of leaves before I got the hint... Once I had one freeze but the next Spring it grew back from the roots (Western NC). My wife was going out to Home Depot and she bought me a Mexican Key lime tree. I super surprised they charged $35 near Boston and this tree was nothing but a cutting. The tree I thought was going to die when leaves all died but 6 weeks later new sprouts popped up all around. I have had at least 3 more sprouting and the tree is at least 3 times larger in volume. I will probably bring the tree into the cellar by mid October depending on the nights. It should get sun from basement windows not ideal but enough I hope to keep leave drop reasonable.Thanks for all the good information you provided in your video

I just got a key lime tree probably a foot tall from store. Planted in sunny spot in yard. Is the jobes fertilizer spikes good for this or does it need more nitrogen etc I like the idea of it lasting 6 months you just put it in the ground.

Here in California the citrus leaves turn yellow with green veins - they need iron. It is Chlorosis

Amazing video! I brought my dwarf mexican key lime houseplant home 2 months ago to my SW facing window. After a 2 month adjustment period it has lots of new growth but I am worried how sustainable this is as we enter the low light season- is there anything I can do to prevent the inevitable low light shock? It is currently getting ~7 hours direct sun but in winter that drops to about 3-4 hours

@@janeenutley3167 hi!! I've had mine for 2 years now. It flowers all the time and it's been doing very well. I live in Southern Ontario Canada. Like I said I have a very good SW exposure and that seems to help keep my plant healthy. I have harvested 8 key limes so far ! Remember you might need to use a tooth brush to pollinate..just move between the flowers and that should do the trick.

@@janeenutley3167 I got my plant at Lowe's! There are plenty of tropical plants available this time of year so go and have a look! I was told it would take 3-5 years to get fruits but I got fruits in under one season! Hope this helps!!

What about pruning mines in apot it's about e years old. One is about 7 foot tall. Should I cut it and trim up from the bottom. I live on Las Vegas. I dont have it in derect sun. Leaves are dark green. I feed it fish emulsion. Thanks jim80

Enjoyed the video. Not sure if you could give me some tips. I've had my key lime tree for a few months now. I live in the Midwest and brought in my plant inside before it gets really cold out, under a full spectrum artificial light. I've noticed a lot of leaves are falling off. I'm struggling with trying to figure out why it is. I've used epsom salt, a citrus fertilizer 2-2-2 ratio, just recently moved it to a terracotta pot, re-potted with miracle grow succulent mix. In México they are called lemons (limones). Mexican/key lime are excellent for seasoning sweets, sours, potato chips Lays/Ruffles, soups (not creamy soups), seafood. They are a must on a Mexican household table.

@@TheGreenAlchemist Very handy, by the way also got a Haden mango tree which I can't wait to see it bloom for the first time. Try using this lime on potato chips alone or with some hot sauce. 🍟😍And absolutely try adding some drops of lime to chicken soup.

My mom had this tree growing in her back yard when I was little in Florida and one of the hurricanes killed it years ago... in Puerto Rico we call the key lime fruit "limón verde" or like what my grandfather called the fruit "naranja" which means orange but in Puerto Rico we call the orange "china", whereas the Persian lime or Mexican lime that you find in the grocery store is called "lima" sometimes Spanish people still call it "limón" though, the term is up for debate for sure... When I was little and the bush bore fruit my mom would make this delicious limade/lemonade with it that was unlike any other lemonade I've had... just recently I found this tree in home depot and started growing it for the first time and this year it's starting to bare fruit!!

I've made lemonade with the typical USA lemon the Eureka lemon and I didn't like it, Eureka lemonade is extremely sour and no amount of sugar will be enough to take the sourness. Anyhow, my preferred lemon for lemonade is mexican lime.

I bought a lime tree online, and it's mostly doing well... but it keeps losing leaves pretty consistently. The leaves dont turn yellow or any other color, they just shrivel/dry up and fall off. Is it a problem with moisture level? I read somewhere that I should start misting, so I've been trying that in order to help. My tree is producing new growth (albeit slowly in my estimation), and it's flowering A LOT.

Yes I'd say its a problem with both lower light and humidity levels. When we bring them inside unless we have a greenhouse or a Florida room they probably won't get enough light. I have to end up putting my tropical citrus trees under grow lights. Keep in mind our houses are fairly hot and bone dry too. Make sure you have a humidifier going with them to balance them out and I usually shut the air vent in their room so they don't get very hot and dry. Sounds like you're taking pretty good care of it if its flowering and putting on a little mass. Good luck.

Think the mulch is not needed our trees take 90 to 100 degrees here in CA no mulch used We have old trees and they have withstood short periods down to 29 degrees in SoCal but we cover them also if frost warnings Ours from beginning as a two ft tall plant has gotten hose water outside.

Your comment about temperature is wrong. Citrus works as a great landscape plant all over florida which gets down to zone 8, and can tolerate temperatures down into the 20s

It will probably be ok, but you can prune it if you want.

Sure will. Just remember, he is stressed, so try not to add any more stress to him. This means not much intense direct sunlight, do not overwater, and on the other hand, don't let him go too long without it. During this time once the top inch to two inches of the soil dries out give him some more. Make sure the excess water can drain freely away from his pot too. Depending on how bad it was he may even drop every single leaf but don't worry, trees have secondary leaves/buds (and the stems can photosynthesize in the meantime) that will emerge in a couple of weeks and all will be fine. I wouldn't feed too much during this time either. If you do, use a little bit of citrus-specific fertilizer that will provide the right micro and macronutrients that he needs. I had this problem and would only give like 2 limes and a lot of flowers one year I tapped every flower or as much as I could pretty much pollinating them and that year I got like 40 limes

Yes they will. Usually in about 3-6 years with full production at about 10.

I got a dwarf keylime about 3 years ago, first 2 it actually produced a couple of limes. The 3rd nothing, but I was also sidetracked with cancer treatments. Now I'm trying to get it back to good health, it does have healthier looking leaves than it did, but they are super sticky/sappy and I'm not sure if that was its defense to what looks like little bugs that got stuck and died. I have cleaned 1 leaf off to see what happens. I would like to get it fuller, it is rather scraggly looking.

My statement would be that if you had to do so many things to grow a lime wouldn’t it be just better to go and buy it from the fruit store? All I ever did was water my trees and look after them and give them chicken manure and every time they did not give any fruit I’m absolutely fed up and I will throw the laundries out onto the compost heap as an absolutely useless fruit that demands too much care and give so little for so much work sorry

It truly is, plus I get bitten just about every time I try to prune or assess a certain situation. I love mine though. He's got such a beautiful shade of lime green to his leaves. And even though they hurt I love his thorns. I reckon it's because I know most of that pain gives way to ample fragrant flowers and juicy fruit! He's definitely one of my favorite bonsai trees!
