@@thegreyhavens167I totally agree lol. I always laugh so hard when watching it because it feels like a fever dream 😭 I understand what Peter Jackson was going for, but it just didn’t get executed right. Don’t get me wrong though, I love it. Weird laughter, hobbits jumping on beds, Frodo forgetting Legolas’ name, long slow mo shots, etc. just wouldn’t be the same without it 😂

So you wake up, seeing Gandalf really hits you as a huge surprise, and before you have time to make sense of any of this he looks at you and starts laughing. Adding to your confusion. So as Frodo you do the one thing anyone can do in this situation : a confused mixed feelings laugh.

I think the scouring of the Shire was necessary thematically. The Hobbits couldn't "go home again," for there was no longer, strictly speaking, the home they remembered. Peace and innocence had been lost, and it required further effort on their part to try and restore it. As for Saruman's motivation, we're never specifically told, but I think we can connect it with something Gandalf said to Frodo in the chapter titled "The Shadow of the Past." When Frodo wonders why Sauron would possibly want to attack The Shire and enslave hobbits, Gandalf says, "There is such a thing as malice, and revenge." I think we can apply this statement to Saruman as regards his handiwork in The Shire. Also, though it is a bit beside the point, The Shire's scouring mirrors Frodo's own internal scouring. And while The Shire can be restored (with a little help from Sam and Galadriel) to its former Edenic beauty, the scouring Frodo was subjected to is too deep and lasting for him to ever be fully restored. Thus, Frodo is forced to make further sacrifice and leave behind the land and people he loves.

@JeffRebornNow, well said. Very well said! I totally agree how it's thematically necessary and makes perfect academic and philosophical sense. Your totally right. It's definitely the right ending. My personal challenge, though, is that I just don't "enjoy" reading it. It's a bit anti-climatic, it's sad and melancholy, we dont really learn anything new, and honestly after such a long and emotional experience of the ROTK I often find myself putting the book down after Elessar's coronation. \(〇_o)/ Am I crazy?

Frodo not being able to be fully restored to what he once was is part of the allegory Tolkien connected ro WW1. The men who returned from the war were never quite the same and Tolkien lost many friends. Another allegory to WW1 is the orcs. They're described as being quite skilled and intelligent, great at craftsmanship and mechanical engineering and fascinated by explosions and machinery. They symbolize the new military technology of the era during WW1 and the fresh horrors that awaited those who for the first time experienced this new warfare. How we fought was rapidly changing and the ways it impacted the soldiers was like nothing seen before
@WyoCutlass71
@WyoCutlass71 6 ай бұрын
@@tubbyduck5317except that Tolkien said that the books weren’t allegorical, and that he “cordially disliked allegory” due to it’s too on the nose nature. It would be impossible to say that the LOTR books weren’t influenced by Tolkien’s time in the First World War but to call it allegorical would be an insult to the professor. There are other ways to interpret Frodo not being able to be restored while in Middle Earth, including Christian interpretations. There are also ways to interpret the orcs that don’t include the industrial system that came post WW1. Hence why to call it allegorical is not the way I would describe the books

I just finished reading LOTR for the 59th time. Yet again i find that The Scouring of the Shire is one of my favourite chapters. Grima cutting Saruman's throat and his spirit trying to go west but being blown away to nothingness by the wind. It was probably Eru's way of saying "Fuck you, traitor!" Now, for me, that is far more satisfying than a knife in the back and being spiked on a giant water wheel. Each to their own i guess.

Well said. I am probably only on read thru number 10 or 12. 🙇‍♂️ I personally do not love reading the Scouring of the Shire all that much. It just bothers me that Elrond (who seemed to know this was going to happen) and Gandalf (who seems to know it did happen afterwards) didn't help out at all... and it's just so sad. But that scene where Saruman asks to go home, and is blown away, is so incredibly poignant, and sad, and justified, and sympathetic, ... just every emotion walled up into one paragraph. Epic...

@thegreyhavens167 I'm 55, and I got the book for my 10th birthday, so I've had plenty of time. Also, there was a period where I read it twice a year in my teens. With Gandalf, the fact that he knew Saruman was up to no good doesn't mean that he could do anything much about it. He was travelling with the Hobbits and wasn't going to get there any quicker than them. Plus, as he said, his time has passed, and our four heroes are more than capable of dealing with things. Which of course they do. Elrond was never going to interfere in the Shire. It's not the Elven thing to do. I also suspect that he was more invested in getting home to Rivendell and setting things straight before leaving for the Grey Havens. If things hadn't been manageable for the hobbits, then it would have been down to the King to send aid and boot out Saruman and his bully boys.
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 Жыл бұрын
I get it... but honestly seems to me Gandalf could have continued his ride and helped them out. Seems like the hobbits were owed that to me. And Elrond had a guess at the council something like this would happen... I mean literally 5-10 solders would have been enough to prevent it. And he knew he was taking away the Shire's protection when he sent the grey company to Rohan... it's just not a big ask to send a couple guys to look out for the Shire while Frodo and Sam are literally killing themselves to help fix YOUR problem (Elves making rings). Am I crazy?
@markstott6689
@markstott6689 Жыл бұрын
@thegreyhavens167 You're not crazy. You just expect more from the powerful. That it wasn't offered offends your sensibility. However, Tolkien explained why Gandalf left the hobbits to rely on their own abilities. Gandalf believes that between them, dealing with a hundred ruffians was well within their strengths. After all, what they had experienced during the proceeding year had changed them. It had made them understand their own toughness and resourcefulness. They were armoured and armed. They didn't need anyone else. In the end, you either accept Tolkien's script as the final word. Or you could continue to rail against the supposed injustice and let it drive you mad. The best hope in that path is for your watchers to take your side. It won't change anything. Sorry. Expecting anything from Elrond and the Elves is also wasted energy. They're not known for getting involved in minor squabbles, which to them it would seem. For Elrond, he's fostered and protected Isildur's heirs for centuries. He's given Aragorn his daughter and all the symbols of the Kingdom of Arnor. His time is also over. All that's left is shuttering Rivendell and packing for his final journey over the sea. I guess you could argue that Glorfindel could have accompanied the hobbits. Yet what extra would he have offered? In the end, Meriadoc, Peregrin, Samwise, and Frodo managed just fine. The fact that our four heroes led the successful revolt and usurpation of Saruman also cemented them in the minds of general hobbitry. It picked them out as leaders and hobbits worthy of high honours. It, in my opinion, makes Sam's rise to mayor more likely. Without, he's just a gardener. The showing of leadership by Pippin and Merry smoothes their path to Thain and Master of Buckland, respectively. If they had entered the Shire with a guard of Rangers, Elves, or Gandalf, then their part in liberating the Shire would have been lessened. Their stature would have also have been lessened. Sometimes, what is seen is more important than what is said. How Frodo is seen by the hobbits of the Shire is a salutary lesson here. Frodo didn't lead from the front, unlike Sam, Pippin, and Merry. The result is that Frodo's renown is lesser. Yes, he threw a gold ring in a volcano somewhere far away, but Sam, Pippin, and Merry fought big people and freed the Shire. If you still think that I'm wrong, then so be it.

@@33kbohemianseparatist4. Grima has such a rushed character arc that his turning on Saruman this early meant that the movie had to make stuff up about how Grima arrived at Orthanc much earlier than he actually did, messing with the timeline of the entire story. In actuality, Grima arrived at Orthanc after the Ents had flooded Isengard and the Battle at Helm's Deep had already finished. The Ents marched on Isengard on 2 March (reaching it at nightfall), the same date that Gandalf healed Theoden, and Grima was sent away. The Ents flooded Isengard at the end of 3 March, right when the Battle of Helm's Deep starts. Grima reaches Isengard on the 4 March. There's no Grima shedding a tear at seeing the grandness of Saruman's army, no desire to be a "man of Rohan" at that point. However, he does begin to hate Saruman as well as Gandalf, so he throws down the Palantir to try and kill Gandalf, but also to get back at Saruman. Later, after months of torment and verbal abuse from Saruman, and then being betrayed by Saruman to the mercy of the hobbits as the person who killed Lotho Sackville-Baggins, despite being ordered to do so by Saruman. Saruman was using his last remaining power, his very persuasive voice, to try and incite violence once the Scouring of the Shire had ended, and he betrayed Grima in the process, lea. After this, Grima threatened to leave Saruman, but Saruman tried to persuade him that he had no other option but to stay by his side. So, just like in the movie, Grima stabs him in the back and is then shot by one of the hobbits. So, Saruman's death in the movie forces the movie to change the timeline to allow Grima some character development, but even so, it is minimal compared to the books and just ruins the timeframe since the movie fails to establish a new one that compensates for this change. That'd be the objective reason since the timeline is messed up in the films, which is objectively bad for a story. Another reason is that it allows the character development of the four hobbits to reach a proper climax in the Scouring of the Shire. Tolkien describes the Scouring of the Shire as the logical conclusion to the story, and whilst I felt sceptical when I first read that he said that, after reading the books it is very clear that he is correct. The films are very anti-climatic with the hobbits returning to the Shire and then life resuming as normal. This is a more subjective reason, but when complimented with the prior reason of the timeline changes, it is clear that Saruman's death in the books is far superior to his death in the films.

@willlamb9675, great question. Valinor (and the little island of Tol Eressea) are where the gods live in "the west". Humans aren't allowed to go to Valinor. So there used to be 3 big continents on the earth: * one in the west, that's the undying lands of Valinor - sometimes called Aman * one to the east, sometimes called Rhun or Harad, etc * and one continent in the middle, called "Middle Earth" * so you just sail west to get there. That was long ago though. The earth was flat back then. Aften a human actually made it to Valinor (Earendil, Aragorn's ancestor and Elrond's father) the gods made the earth round, and then moved Valinor to another "plane of existance". Heaven I guess? Now the only way to get there is to go to the grey havens where Cirdain the Shipwright builds magically ships that can get you there.

Question: Why did valars didnt defend middle earth from sauron
@thegreyhavens167
@thegreyhavens167 Жыл бұрын
@nawabansari4138, seems to me there are two reasons here: 1) it was always their plan to be super involved at the beginning of the earth, and then slowly back away. I think they felt that the big evil (in this case a weakened Sauron) was finally a small enough villain that we could learn to handle it ourselves, with just a little help from the wizards. I picture it as parents finally letting their children grow up. 2) they had helped the elves before, and the elves yelled at them about it. "stop babying us, let us fight our own battles, wah wah wah". So this time they decided to help them, but not do the fighting themselves. This is how I read it, though other's might read it differently. What do you think?
@AverageCommentor

@@thegreyhavens167Another reason is what happened in the War of Wrath, when the Maiar, who were less powerful than the Valar, helped Middle-earth defeat Mordor, and by doing so destroyed the entirety of Beleriand (a large area West of the Blue Mountains), making Middle-earth a much smaller continent, about 70% it's original size. The Valar were way too powerful, so their only help was through allowing some Maiar into Middle-earth, but take away a lot of their power to prevent the mass destruction that happened previously. And so we get the Istari. Gandalf, the only Istar helping defeat Sauron, then gets much of his power back once he falls in Moria, helping the War against Sauron in its final months, the most vital part of the entire Third Age. So, the Valar did help as much as they could by sending the Istari, and Gandalf's power increase during the War of the Ring allowed his help to be amplified when his help was needed most.

if only he had moved his ass from Orthanc once and tried to do his initial job, he would have already been cooler than Gandalf.

Joshua, I personally find Saruman to be a sympathetic figure most of the time. I feel like he would rather be a good guy and just got in over his head.... But then he has to go and do a total jerk move by attacking the Shire and I lose all pity for Saruman the Stinky! 🤬🤬🤬

@@thegreyhavens167 no, he’s power-hungry and corrupt you could tell there was a problem with him right from the beginning when he was sent on the quest Yavanna (one of the Valar) had to beg him to take Radagast she is the equivalent of a goddess in that world yet Saruman argues with her to the point where she has to beg him then you see how jealous he gets of Gandalf as time goes by starting with jealousy and turning to hatred but Saruman was never really a good guy at least not when he was in middle earth

Definitely a wizard. Gathering wisdom, helping in wars to protect innocents. And the good thing is Kings will trust my advice which means they will listen when I say they're making a mistake and reconsider because it comes from a wizard, instead of acting egotistically and not second-guessing themselves like when the advise comes from a human. Saving even more lives as a result. But I don't want to look 70 for an eternity. Realistically speaking my side quest would be screwing half of Middle Earth, so... there's that... I'm not spending eternity with my dick in my pants. I know I sound like an idiot but come on, as a guy would you really consider the option to go to Middle Earth and stay a virgin for a hundred thousand years lol

Nope, Rohan took them all out. He instead invaded with about 100 men... not really solders... just low life bullies. He also had the help of Lotho Sackville-Baggins, the relatives of Bilbo that he always hated.

I never understood Saruman losing his powers. He was a powerful Maia who rebelled like Saruman and the balrogs. Rebellion shouldn’t have changed his nature.

To be fair if saruman never menched about the belrog gandalf whould of skip that side quest and not got the bonuses of that side quest to help mach saruman's level and upgrade to be able to steal his looks so it saruman's faulty really

Truth! I mean Gandalf didn't let anyone else fight against the Balrog so he could get all the XP and level up. Kinda selfish, but kinda genius at the same time. Honestly, just about everything Saruman does backfires on himself. Are we sure he's the smartest guy in Middle Earth?

@@thegreyhavens167 probably not maybe it was a side quest that saruman couldn't be bothered to do so he sent out gandalf to do so without realising the reward that was given upon it's completions once someone slay the belrog also what if saruman fought the belrog instead will it be the same outcome or different
