Not for some. Others will have different opinions. I have met a number of ex-DDR people and views vary widely. One man I met accessed his Stasi file after the Wall fell.....only to find his own sister had been working for them. He has never spoke to her or seen her since '89.....and doesn't want to. But imagine how he must have felt?

It warms my heart to hear those soft words, we in north america were constantly bombarded with lies about threats and enemiesd that didn't even exist, we were told to live in fear and we did.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the DDR is actually treated fairly in this. The key quote is this one: "If you didn't expect too much, it was pretty easy to live a good life." Hear, hear.

The Guardian is considered a leftist newspaper. So you can expect a rather positive report about a socialist state, compared to rather conservative media.

It is very common assessment that lifestyle was a reasonable one, once you let go your freedom of speech. Now, the problem was that, as a whole, the country could not keep economically functioning... Basically, as most socialists countries, it went bankrupt.

East Germany pretty much had the same weather and nature as the West. Buildings were more drab and maintained worse, but a sunny day in a park in the east was just as pleasant as in the west. With the side note that the man in a trench coat reading a news paper, was actually listening to you and not doing any reading in the east. But to avoid people thinking life was normal for people in the east, it helps to show just the drab black and white films and pictures.

Stan Paweł churchill devised operation unthinkable which meant all out war with the soviets after the germans were defeated. It included atomic warfare from the allies, but the soviets had more troops on the front. Anyway i'm pretty sure people were tired of war then and i think the move would've been hugely unpopular

I find a certain charm in East Berlin, I have seen some other videos of East Berlin too. I prefer the fancy statues, towers like the Fernsehturm and the sort of old fashioned looking buildings over the neon signs...although I always thought hi-rise flats were kinda ugly...They look like they could collapse at any minute.... 0 ~ 0
