It doesn’t matter what guitar you play, they all sound more or less the same. Because the amp/speaker are the same, you’re the same week to week, and no effects. This channel is about spending time in your company while you natter on and pootle about with guitars, which you clearly love. You don’t take yourself too seriously, whilst being serious about the quality of the guitars on the bench. In my view you’ve put together the most fun, relaxing channel on KZbin. And that’s why I’m here every week. 😊

Hey Colin - love your channel and videos - you are one of the best guitar demo experts on the Tube. The reason why your method is so appealing to me (and many of us I imagine) is that you give us a great consistent baseline of amp/pedal/volume settings and play tasteful, simple (in a good way) riffs and very guitaristic pieces that don’t vary too much in style and “notiness” thus allowing us to hear the guitars in similar familiar situations and letting them shine (or not) on their own merits. Virtuoso level players (which I am not) might use such highest level technical skill to make any slab of wood with strings sound amazing and would thus be useless as demo-ers. Your playing and method is perfectly suited to this task and is very helpful to us. If you suddenly start busting out ultra high gain tapping riffs I imagine we would all be impressed and promptly stop watching since we now can’t hear any of the character of the guitars. Lol. Carry on, I implore you. And don’t let your lack of inspiration get you down. The true test of an instrument is whether you can play music on it, it would be unfair to expect any random guitar to inspire the next “Whole lotta love” or “Satisfaction” level composing on a rainy Tuesday.

It’s a universal truth that we guitar players get into ruts and sometimes get down on our own playing, but I will echo what others have said here Colin. Your set up and demos consistently showcase the guitars your playing. And perhaps the most important thing is your honesty. There are far too many paid promo channels that leave you a little numb because everything is “the best”. For me this model doesn’t interest me a whole lot. It looks fantastic, but I believe my TV yellow LP Special gives me what I want in this realm…keep on strumming Colin! ❤

Thank you for another great review. I got one of these at my local shop last weekend and did a video about it on my small channel. I absolutely loved mine. The knobs were perfectly installed and work extremely well. The guy at the shop commented on how light it was and I agreed- I got it home and weighed it to find mine is 7 pounds 10 ounces. I think it goes to show one of the big differences between inexpensive and expensive guitars. There is more consistency in an expensive guitar than an inexpensive guitar. It is much more a roll of the dice as to what the quality of the individual guitar will be when it is more affordable- one might be blessed and get one with no issues that is super light (for a Les Paul) like mine or get one that is heavier with a few issues like this one. I’d say two PRS core models, for example, would be much more likely to be uniformly almost perfect.

Colin, good post as usual. I'm done with Epiphone, at least the ones made in the far east. I'm a Strat guy but I do have an Epiphone 2021 Lucille, which is my go to( I modified it by installing a short Maestro Vibrola). I believe you're getting robbed with the Epiphone Les Paul's but this Bonamassa Les Paul is a bit more authentic than the usual models. To my naked eye the body dimensions seem correct, at least. This model seems like a better deal than the current Inspired by Custom Shop models!

The headstock shape on this Les Paul looks great but the older Epiphone shape, with the 'cut off' corners really bugs me. I'm not sure why. I just can't warm to it. Other LP type headstocks, Vintage, Dean, Ltd are OK, just not the Epi clipped-wing style. I know it makes no difference to the sound or the way they play.

I agree that I never care about my Epiphone not having a Gibson headstock. I'm happy with the clipped corners, the new style (a la this guitar) or whatever. It's not a Gibson. I'm not trying to claim it is. I don't care that it isn't a Gibson. The headstock makes no difference in the sound that comes out of my playing, for better or worse.

Got to hear Joe shred on this last night in my hometown of San Jose. I had just purchased it from his website the day before! I'm not a guitar player, but am a collector. This is my second guitar. My other is a GCJ Signature "Blak & Blu" Epiphone Casino. When I was at his merch booth before the show I saw he had several of these for sale. The one on top of the table had a sign that said $1100 and it was the limited to 300 edition with his name in the fretboard, and a big fat signature in gold on the body! He had what looked like 10 of these lined up in the back in his "Nerdville" branded cases. There was another sign next to this, that said he was selling this same guitar for $1500, but it would be the one he opened with his first song of the show! I asked his merch team for more details, and they said yes, the same 300 edition model he would be playing in the first song of the performance would be for sale, and he would sign AND date it. Like Arthur_My_Dear said, they all sound more or less the same, but Joe himself said this Epiphone actually sounds better than the real deal '55 Les Paul's in Copper Irredescent he's acquired (3). Watching and hearing him play this Epiphone replica live was the biggest endorsement ever, and I'm super happy with my purchase, even if it never gets played.

Here in the US, Guitar Center is carrying a Limited Edition Epiphone Les Paul Custom P90 for $799, on sale for $599. It came in a fancy gig bag from the factory. I had been considering the Special P90 but hesitated on the color somewhat. I decided to trade two guitars and an amp for the Custom. Black with gold hardware, P90 Pros, ebony fretboard, and a comfortable weight. I wish I had more details than what GC provides. So, $100 more than the Special for a Custom. I didn't tear it down when I got home, just a setup with the existing strings. I did swap out the black knobs for the ones from my Standard 60s. I like the looks better, and one of the stock knobs was wonky, btw. I'm definitely keeping this one! I read about the Joe B 55. I think what I have is good enough for me.

Hey, here’s an idea: redo the guitar with 6-pole mini-humbuckers! A modern day LP Deluxe! With the Gibson type surrounds and the Deluxe style mounts, they would fit right into the P90 cavities. (Don’t get actual vintage Gibsons, the size is off a bit). Mini’s would make it scream glorious sounds. New project and a new pickup area for you. Oh, and do a full setup with a check for high frets and the nut slots lowered. Epi never does it quite right on the lower priced guitars.

Nice looking guitars these. I have a similar problem with new epi phones and the resonance they produce. I think these kind of guitars will age well and become more resonant in time as the wood dries out and they are played. I have a 2003 epi LP and that really rings out now but when I bought it brand new all those years ago it had the same problem if you can call it that. I have some advice on your playing if your open to that. When people sit down playing guitar they tend to hunch over the guitar tilting it back to see what they are doing. Try adopting a more relaxed upright position almost making the guitar feel more like it does when your standing playing. Try to listen and feel where your playing without looking what your doing as much. You have a really nice vibrato leave more space in your lead playing and use that vibrato 👍.

I bought a $65 2011 MIC Squier. Rosewood fretboard, full body. Installed a loaded noiseless pick guard ($200) a big brass tremelo block ($35) Fender locking tuning machines ($40). $340 total. Filed down the frets. Sand papered the neck, spray lacquered. Added Fender decal (no, not to scam but as my own inside joke). Would stack it up against $2,000 Ultras. Amazing sound, lovely. People, a guitar is a hunk of wood plus Electronics and some mechanicals. I had a blast with my little project. Better than almost all of the junk big companies are selling. Wise up. Have fun. I did wonder whether you were a bit critical of this guitar in part because of that comparison of more expensive Les Pauls (Gibson, Heritage, Eastman, Maybach) you did recently. Looking at it from a slightly different angle, I think it is important to get to that stage where you can tell the nuances between the "expensive, good quality" guitar and a "mid-price, medium quality" ones. The question is how much are you willing to pay for these nuances.

In my opinion there's nothing wrong with your playing, its absolutely great, i love tuning in and enjoy your bluesy improvs cuz that was mostly the kind of vibes i used to have when i used to sit down with my semi hollow and just see where it would go. I quite enjoy the sound of this guitar, i love p90s and one of my plans was to modify my guitar and put a pair of those instead of the humbuckers.

Good afternoon, Colin. I'm really not liking the guitar. I do like the copper color and the body color is really nice. The quality of the pick guard and the knobs really turned me off. Once you played your first set, I thought it sounded dull and lifeless. You are right, it is not singing. Pickup height adjustment may be critical with this guitar. Overall, I really don't like it. Your playing was as always and that is great. If the guitar doesn't meld with you, you won't FEEL the guitar. I would have expected better for the price, but maybe you paid for the JOE name and not the Epiphone. I've had some superb Epiphones and none ever sounded like this one. I have an SG with P90s and it sounds better than this one and it was 400 Euros. I say sell it and find something that goes with your heart and soul. Win some, lose some. Have a great weekend.

I currently own 2 Epi’s one has the club neck the other a modern sculpted neck. I love the club neck and really dislike the modern neck. If a guitar doesn’t feel right to you it will never feel at home in your hands.

@@richardsveum8452 this is fact, Richard. I believe a player can pick up ANY guitar and play it to some degree, but the real heart of the playing is in the connection one has with an instrument. For nearly every man is a woman, but one will never get the mate that fits and works completely. Guitars and people have to have a continuity to make the best sound and feeling come to life. Reviews and ratings are subjective for sure. You may love the club neck, others may go...bleh, that's shit, but what is right for one is not for the other. I make the most of my budget guitars and yes, some are like step-children, but still need the love and best I can give them. Your comment is perfect. It's about feel and connectivity. Rock on my friend, rock on.

I just ordered one. It’s on back order. If it feels cheap because of the knobs, switch and pick guard, all easy fixes. You can also buy a set of Gibson P90’s, ALNICO 3’s or 5’s for $238.

I’ve been waiting for one rave review about this axe to perhaps inspire me to buy one. Most recently I’ve been super happy with the purchase of an epiphone Les Paul modern . Bought used but it looks as though it were never played . Just to speak of epiphone s quality I believe this one is excellent . Surprised to hear that the pro version of their p 90’s leaves something to be desired . I could tell you that the standard p 90s in my 2010 gold top sound amazing . And that was 400$ brand new . I’ll keep playing my lps and hope to be inspired one day by you Colin , to purchase an outstanding find. I did buy a JB Lazarus , and agree generally with your review. It plays great , looks good , and has a unique sound compared to my others . Cheers

Thanks Colin. Yes, .. the price .. these guitar companies have to be profitable. And if it feels like a secondary thing to play .. that's sort of important.

You've reminded me that I have an Epiphone 56 Gold top reissue (P90's) made in 1981 on the wall somewhere that I need to give some love to. I think it cost me approx £300 pre-loved (came with a Hiscox case).

Thanks for another one, Col'! I've realized that there are times when I can be musicly creative and times when it's more difficult. For me, it's rarely the instrument - it's me. I was unsure how I felt about my first Gibson Les Paul for the first few months I owned it. I've since really come to understand it, and now it's one of my favorite guitars. 🤘☺️🎸

Hi Colin, another real nice demo/evaluation. I'm going to try and find one here in Maryland USA and give it a play. I like the price, but for that price it ought to have a Switchcraft toggle switch and output jack. Other Epi's in this price range have them, this one should too. For the sustain "situation" I think you needed to bring the gain up a bit on those P-90's and you're sustain issue will be gone. Don't apologize for your playing. we're all human and sometimes have crap days with a pick in our hands!! I know I do.....Lastly, I "think" you tested this guitar too close to all those high end guitars. Maybe you were expecting a bit too much out of this guitar. Just a thought, I might be completely wrong.... At any rate, thanks for another HONEST review. That's why I love what you do. You call it like you see/feel it. That's ALL GOOD,, Bryan

I've had that inspiration issue with some guitars. But, like relationships and neighborhoods and jobs and anything else that's different at first and then it becomes home, ...you could suddenly find that connection that makes it 'right'.
