What a very interesting guitar. If you hadn't covered this one it would have continued to fly under my radar. I really like these guitars, and didn't Stevie Marriott play one in Humble Pie? I love the fact that Epiphone are dipping into their history and their own brand guitars are great. These have been on my radar for a number of months now but I've been undecided on the Willshire or the Coronet but will probably have the Willshire for additional flexibility. I really like the look of the Crestwood too. They have mini hums rather than P90s which is a shame as I would like one of them for sure but my mini hum needs are covered by my Riviera. I think the geezer in Reef plays a Crestwood( an original I think). Great video again Colin and some really nice playing. 👍

There was a used one of these in a nearby shop. I thought it was interesting, but wound up getting a 2010 Epiphone G-400 custom (basically a repro of the ‘61 SG-style Les Paul custom with the three pickups) instead. What can I say, it’s an SG and a perfect mate to my Epi 1961 Les Paul SG Standard. I love the metal Epiphone plate on the headstock. I also had a moment where you took the pickguard off and I was like, “Wow, it looks sharp that way.” Great work, good sir!

I’ve had a bunch of recent Epis that’s I bought new…QC is all over the place unfortunately, all of them have needed varying degrees of work out of the box. A few that had to go back. When you get a good one, they can be a nice bang for the buck, but I’d advise anyone to try them out in person first if they’re able before purchasing. This one sounds nice, it looks and sounds the part.

The SG body style didn't come out until '61, this has been around since the late 50s. Gibson was putting out double cut Les Pauls with slab bodies in the late 50s if I'm not mistaken, which was the same time these Wilshires and Coronets were first being made.

These 2 guitars are setup very similar with P90s, TOM bridges and all mahogany construction. The Classic has a D profile SlimTaper neck while the Wilshire's Medium C profile is actually smaller. I have several Epiphones, the Wilshire has earned its place as my favorite but the SG Classic is right behind.

I stopped by my local shop earlier today (meaning Friday afternoon here in the US) to pick up some EB Slinky strings. Little did I know that I would run across this guitar in cherry red, Brand new with a 2022 serial number. Well, I just had to give it a play. I ran it thru a Blues Junior like the one I have at home and WoW!! what a great little guitar!! Epiphone Pro soapbar P-90's with CTS pots. It played and sounded great!!! So for $499.00 USD it followed me home. NGD!!! I'm a happy old man!!! You did a great review as always Colin!! I appreciate your insight!! Keep up the great work....Cheers!! Bryan PS. After careful scrutiny, I do believe that this guitar is NOT veneered!!! It might be much tougher to tell on your ebony model, but with the translucent finish on my cherry red version it appears to be a two or maybe a three piece body!! How Gibson like 🙂!! What do you think of that?? I'm really surprised!! Have a great day!!

Thanks for doing this one, Colin! I actually seem to like it from the first glance, contrary to the Coronet, which somehow seems odd, unbalanced looking to me with the gigantic white pickguard. I see this was an older episode. I've wanted to comment prior however if I'm honest I was intimidated. And then I found Tony Rice quote. When you sit in with like minded musians- Know you are as good as they are! Simple concise and empowering. What ever your level of guitar is look for the best players at your level & make you better, and there's no end to learning and becoming better! I'm buying this Epiphone because I too love The P90 sound, I played this guitar at Bob's in Pembroke ontario. It might be the best guitar story in that this is Epiphones design independent of Gibsons input! I thought it was like a Les Paul in body resonant tone and an Ibenez I have. I pick it up this week. And it's because folks like you and Tom Bukavac who just tell it like it is. Thanks for the inspiration Doug 😎

@@theguitaristas Got a reissue Wilshire Pro with mini-humbuckers and it's my favorite guitar for the last 15 years! It feels right and has a surprising amount of tonality - and when I play Gibson's - the Les Paul is too heavy and the SG is awkward to handle. The Wilshire Pro has the batwing headstock - which some think is odd - but I like it. At the end of the day - it is simply a joy to play - and that's what matters. The only thing that I have found that is more fun to play is a Parker Nitefly - which is currently out of my budget.

I commented on this demo previous and had said I was picking one up soon. Well I got it with a great Gibson gig bag. So I love this guitar in terms of fit and finish this guitar punches above its weight - except for the p90s they are way to tame for this Guitar. I have to say this re issue Epiphone is incredibly resonant it rings for days. It's wonderful. I'm looking to replace the p90s with better ones. So I've re posted to ask what is the appropriate upgrade in your opinion. I'm in Canada so I pay more for everything music! I just thought Duncan's are over $200 each so $400 +15% tax seems wrong for this level of guitar. Help...... Thanks for your commitment to just bring the truth. Cheers Doug😎

That p90's sounds very good! For that price ar least. I think one of the guitarists of the aussie band Radio Byrdman used one of these (the humbucker one, don't remeber now) back in the 70's. Looks and sound like a great guitar for garage punk. If only the neck had a little thinner shape, maybe a modern C or D, it would Be more comfortable for playing chords with small hands. 12 Gibson/Epiphone radius is the best radius anyway.

Good morning Colin and all. Oh man this is great. Love watchin' you review Epiphones. Just got a new used Epi LP Special P90 myself, another GC 'steal.' The middle switch position is both P90s combined as humbucking- did not expect that but love it. Wonder if same on Wilshire? Cheers everyone from Dallas!

Cheers Mark, that's a good question I shall have to investigate that... I did wonder why they are so evenly matched in readings maybe thats something to do with it? 🤔

Yeah all modern guitars have neck and bridge p90s set up in such a way that there's no hum in the middle position (as long as both volumes are at the exact same level, that is). It's called RWRP "reverse wound reverse polarity"

Hello Colin, really enjoyed this one, thank you. I had been meaning to drop a line to you to say I bought a Crestwood Custom in a white a few months back, and thought, ‘This is just the sort of guitar I can see Colin playing and really liking’. Given your preference for SGs, these are kind of the Daddy of the SGs. The Crestwood Custom is really interesting with the two Mini Humbuckers and the very stable Trematone. Looking likely that there will be a Crestwood Custom on the channel soon then 👹

I picked up a vintage crestwood around my birthday and it needed a few things, nut, strings, etc but the price was right and I love it... although I'd rather p90s to these humbuckers any day. Awesome video as always 👌

See I knew you'd like it Colin. Like I've mentioned before they are said to be precursor to the SG. Like with the coronet as soon I heard the rumours that they where going to be re issued I just had to get one. I waited over. a year to get mine after preordeing and got very lucky with a chery one full of beautiful flame and figuring. The epiphone pro p90s are just killer they articulated and very responsive which is what you expect with a p90. But they have this knarly sound. They're amazing. One thing that's a surprise Colin is the pickgaurd it's so thick. No idea why.

Cheers Sionyn, it's a chunky thing for sure and you're dead right it's a killer guitar! 😎👍

I love the design of these Epiphones, the originals and the new ones! It's the only Epiphone I'm buying for my collection, just gotta design whether vintage or new!?🤔

Who slept on these when the originals were cheap? I did!!!! Tons of punk and garage bands would use these live and sound really good, too. Your jam sounds great. You're getting a real San Fransisco 60s vibe with the P-90s.

Man! It seems as if you are more comfortable in front of the camera and that your playing improves from week to week. Long live The King! How does it feel to be The King?

Cheers David! I don't know about that but sometime's when filming it feels like I've completely forgotten how to play, so often its more that I'm the 'King of Pain' 🤣 🤣 but somehow or other it always seems to come together and I really appreciate the kind words an support 🙏 😊 Thanks mate have a great weekend! 😎👍

Cheers, great video! I didn't care too much about these when they reissued them. 57 was when Gibson bought epiphone. Maybe this in 59 was one of Epiphone's first new guitars under new ownership. I wonder if it was designed prior to the 57 takeover or if Gibson told Epiphone to stop making archtops and come up with something new or if Gibson donated the design....Thanks! 😃

Cheers Scotty, some good questions there!... that gives me a great reason to buy the Crestwood now so I can do some more research and answer them in the future 🤣👍 Nice one mate have a good weekend!
