I agree that the Sire is very bright sounding, but that feels like one of the biggest aspects of the Telecaster. Bright, twangy, etc. I like it's neck the best to look at. Also people complaining about a 4-600 budget, I think the price range is reasonable. Sure you can find $1-200 guitars, but there is a lot of risk there. I've seen reviews of folks playing gems from companies like Firefly, but usually that ~$500 or so range is a pretty safe bet. Considering you're looking at a minimum $1300 for the Gibson name on the headstock or $800 for Fender,, it's a solid point to review around from well known companies.

High fidelity is a great description of the G&L pickups. The drawback of the ASAT is that parts, like the neck, are not interchangeable with standard Teles, so if you want to mod it, you can not. My partscaster would have the Squier body, Sire neck, G&L pickups, 6 saddle ash tray bridge, and, Kluson tuners. Thanks for another great video Colin! Skoal!

Colin, try the G&L ASAT Special. I've had a 1990 USA version and a 2013 Indonesian "Tribute" version. The Tribute is still in my collection. They don't quite do the Tele twang, but with your love of P90s, I think you would dig the tones.

Another fantastic review Colin! Really appreciate your honest thoughts. I am a G&L fan, I own 3 Tribute ASATs because a store here in the US kept putting them on sale and all were between $300-$400. I have the Classic Ash, the Bluesboy (with neck HB) and the Special (with two Jumbo MFDs). The special sounds amazing, those MFDs are so wide-range you can get into HB territory (like a LP) and change the tone to get a really full Tele sound. And I have added Fender 4-way switches to 2 of them to add the valuable series position.

I will be very interested if you do cover Fazley and Jet guitars: think they are made in the same factory? Been reading about / looking at both brands online for a while with interest but never seen either in person yet: spec and build quality does look good and at price where changing p'ups, tuners or saddles if not as desired would still keep em in the budget range. I reckon a good few of your subscribers, like me will really enjoy your budget tele vids. Keep it up Colin! Cheers Wayne

Great comparison. Loving it... got yourself another subscriber :) The way I figured this si: The difference between CV and Affinity (where I live) is EUR 285. I bought used one, so the difference went up to 310. So I just changed to original Fender parts: - pots + 4-way switch: EUR 60, - PUPs to Fender Ultra Noiseless Vintage: EUR 160 set (if you go Tex-Mex way it will be EUR 70 cheaper and some prefer true single coil) - Fender American standard tuning machines: EUR 50 - bone nut + a good setup (do it yourself or pay for it). The total came to EUR 270 + the setup which is about EUR 20 where I live. At the end the bridge and the wood are the only things Squier on it. AFAIC the bridge does the job and, if you pay attention when buying, the neck on an Affinity can be quite good too (apart from the fretwork, which can be corrected) ;)

@ryanmct1892 Жыл бұрын
I bought a Player Telecaster last year, 2021 model. I’ve changed the pickups to the 51 nocaster set and added an ashtray bridge. I love the guitar a lot, but it definitely had some basic issues: 1. The fret wear was almost instantaneous after a few weeks playing. More than I’d have expected, and I wasn’t putting hours and hours into it. 2. The pick-up selector switch. Cracked and had to be glued on within weeks. 3. The strap button at the bottom of the guitar. Begun unscrewing after a few weeks and eventually the thread inside the body completely wore so now it just pops in and out. Ultimately as much as I love the guitar, it was nearly 700 euro new and these things feel really avoidable at that price point from Fender. So it definitely was disappointing. Most importantly of course, it sounds amazing.

I love Telecasters and I have 5 of them myself (1 Mexican, 2 Japanese, a self-build and a Chinese cheapo thinline which is surprisingly good). The 5 you demoed are all good instruments and like you say you could take them gigging and they'd all do you proud. I think I would probably go for the ASAT, I think that sounds the best. as for the price range 4-600 is affordable for most people but the Fazeley Telecasters are probably the ultimate in value for money based on the reviews I have seen. A couple of hundred quid gets you something very comparable.

It was interesting hearing each guitar sound a bit different yet still sound like a Telecaster for the most part. It seems that you couldn't go far wrong with any of these. If I do get a Tele, I wasn't planning to but I get tempted, I would want mine in butterscotch blonde. For me, part of the desire to get a different guitar is to nod to history, so I have a preference for the most historically iconic colors. That's why my 335 is in cherry. If I were to get a Les Paul I expect for that reason I would go for either a traditional burst or a gold top. Anyway, I'm looking forward to your budget model comparison to see if one of them can tip me into full GAS. Thanks as always for the great videos.

Big G&L fan here! I currently own 9 of them... 7 US made and 2 Indonesian. The older G&L imports used US made pickups and hardware (now made by Cortek) and many argue that they rival the US made ones. While I agree they are fantastic and better than some US Fenders I've owned and/or played, I still very much favor the US made G&L line. With their "options" order you can order a semi custom guitar to your preferred specs (within reason - kind of like Keisel/Carvin) for well under $2k (US) which includes a G&G hardshell case. You can even order stainless steel frets.

The Sire T3 is about the same price as the ASAT Tribute and Squire CV. Around $400 in the USA. For the lowest price, The Squire Affinity is really hard to beat. The body and neck are good. A good set up and new pick ups and it's a good guitar. The Squire Bullet is a thinner body, so if you want to save weight...The electronics are a little rough though.

Kudos for this one, Colin 👏 I was really looking forward to the tele shootout and you didn't disappoint! Can't wait to hear the cheap competition next time, maybe you could throw the Squier in there just for reference? I especially appreciated the back to back bits of each guitar, which makes the comparison much more usable. Sure must have taken a lot of work but worth it IMO! If I should only choose one, I'd go with the G&L because of the excellent pups, individual brass saddles and a classic maple neck and board. Lookwise the Squier and Sire are killer for sure and the Tokai natural Alder body is beautiful, too. Cheers!

Bought used Affinity Tele 20 years ago, fallen over loads, left out in rain in garden, still plays/works as it should❤

Great well edited and planned video Colin! For me right from the start I had made my mind up on sound alone. There wasnt so much obvious during the back to back first bit of playing on the bridge pups but for me what nearly always lets the tele down is awful lipstick neck pups. This is where for me the G & L shone brightest, followed by the Fender. All subjective but although they all sounded damn good the G & L price / sound seemed spot on over all the sound tests. Cheers for another great vid mate.

The Tokai looks almost exactly like how I've modified my telecaster, so I have a bias towards the looks of that one. Doesn't sound very tele like, but I agree it has a very nice sound of its own. The Squier looks so good and sounds so good, at least coming through my speakers was my favorite tone. Would definitely be my first choice. Beautiful brightness without being too shrill. I wasn't crazy about any of the others tones.. including the real Fender. The Sire and G&L just look too different for me, but I think I am listening with my eyes . Great video and very nice tele collection coming together!

Always looking forward to your Friday videos! Considering Harley Benton is one of the best bang for your buck guitars out there, why isn't one of their many Tele copies in your comparison?
