Gary and Rory Gallagher were proper friends. Gary went and visited Rory near the end of his life when he was going through a hard time while living in a hotel in London. RIP to both of them. I started playing guitar because of Rory.

I was lucky to see Rory live in Toronto at Massey Hall as a young kid. It was brilliantly awesome. Only saw Gary Moore on the TV...Great songs ! He is still brilliant. Sometimes astonishingly great !

I remember watching Gary Moore for the first time on ‘the Tube’ TV show with his red Strat, the tremolo arm spinning wildly. The man was so determined to produce an awesome performance putting heart and soul into it; which i thought was clear in his 2003 live Sheffield gig.

very cool video, I was fortunate to see Gary when he toured the USA, after Victims of the Future I saw him using the white reissue Strat and the Junior that was 1984, then when Wild Frontier came out he toured through NY in 87, he used the white and red single p.u. Charvels only. Then in 1992 at The Beacon in NYC, he used mostly "Stripe", white Strat reissue and "Greenie". Thanks for sharing, appreciate all that you do!

@@TheGuitarShow oh most definitely, I forgot to add that I saw Gary with Greg Lake too at the Palladium in NYC, he was using his salmon strat and the leopard spotted Charvel, which he threw straight in the air and it crashed to the floor at the end of the show!

Those 2 Charvels do something to me. The tone he got with them. Based on the footage of the various live gigs from the end of the 80’s you find here on KZbin. That extra long version of the loner just gets me every time and of course empty rooms. Some serious emotion in both those tracks

One of my all-time favorites! Saw him a bunch of times and met him once at an autograph signing at Tower Records in (I think) 1986 in Stanton (or Buena Park) California. He and the band all signed my Ibanez Roadstar RS-440 and my "We Want Moore album. Both hang on the wall right above my head as I type this. :)

Most people associate Gary Moore with the 59 Les Pauls,but totally ignore that he played vintage Strats just as much. He recorded the "Corridors of Power" album,almost exclusively with the "Salmon Pink" Strat,which is nowadays owned by his son,along with the 59 "Still Got The Blues" or "Stripe" L/P. Not to mention during the 80s,he used lots of Superstrats and was one of the first famous players,using PRS Cu 22/24 models. He was also an avid user of the Floyd Rose bridge system,during this period.

I can't tell you how awesome I think this video is!! A couple weeks back, you posted that you would be doing this video. And I have been really anxious to see this. And it exceeds all I have anticipated! Gary was a force of nature on the guitar. He had so much fire and passion and yet could play a ballad so delicately and beautiful that it was hard to believe it was the same person. And as we know, he could play so many styles of music. Once I heard Corridors of Power when it came out, I was hooked for life. But he was also a great writer, great vocalist and live player. You have shown quite a few guitars I was not aware he owned. I was particularly interested in the details on the '61 Fiesta Red Straotocaster. I am very fortunate to own one of the Fender Masterbuilt Gary Moore tribute versions of this guitar. There were only 60 made and because my favorite music store: The Music Gallery Inc in Chicago IL knew how much I love Gary Moore, they gave me the chance to buy it. More importantly right now is - Thank You for this awesome documentary! You are creating some of the finest guitar videos on KZbin. Thank you Roman!

Yes, it is one of those guitars made by John Cruz that came with the red flight case with Gary Moore and the logo he was using around the time of Victims of the Future. It included a white Dimarzio guitar strap like he used with various memorabilia and even included some of this actual guitar picks! As much as I really love his blues work, his early Thin Lizzy and solo hard rock albums are the ones that are my favorite! BTW, the story on the guitar case on the cover of Back on the Streets you told is amazing!@@TheGuitarShow

Saw Skid Row supporting Atomic Rooster with support by Genesis at Exeter Uni' In the early 70's, Gary did a solo slot playing Drums and Guitar at the same time, also saw him promoting Grinding Stone at Killerton Gardens where after me and a couple of mates had invaded the stage he got us to "sing" backing vocals on Mama tell your Daughter. Happy daze.

I can remember breaking a B or E string as a kid and tying a square knot to mend the break and hope that it held while I tuned it up. A new single string was 25 cents that none of us could scratch up at the time, but we never gave up!

someone taught me in the late seventies to9 leave the length on the string, and then re tie it through hole in the brass ring and in a minute you were good to go...not a bad trick to know.

The red strat was used on "Blues for Jimi" and Live in Stockholm on some of the songs, "Empty Rooms" for example, I believe. Absolutely love the sound. By far my favorite Gary's sound with the Greeny Les Paul. Just floors me.

The red Fender strat was not used in the 1987 Stockholm gig, that was a red Charvel with a single EMG pickup.

Saw Gary play with Skid Row in 70' and it changed me, it was a great gig and Gary for the most part had his eyes closed, all I could see was these fingers flashing up and down the fretboard whilst his head was bobbing about with his eyes shut, I was gone, and the crowd were silent for a change with their jaws hanging down. From that night I have always tried to find how Gary played so well and get the tone. It's been a great journey.

I've heard the red charvel actually had an EMG 58 rather than an 81 initially, but was later swapped to the 81 to match the while one. From what I've seen online, he auctioned it off for charity sometime in the 90s. I think the estate may still have the white one. The two of those are definitely my favourite guitars of Gary's :)

Yes, for most of the recorded shows of the red one it had a 58 in it. He did auction it some time in the mid 90's. If memory serves it went for about £500!!! If only I had known!

great video. I believe the Les Paul Jr was left at Gary's one night when he was partying with Steve Jones..Apparently drunk, he threw it against the wall and left it. The red Charvel started out with an EMG 85 (gold logo) and they have a cleaner sound than the EMG 81 in the white Charvel. (I believe the changed the red one to an 81 towards the end of the rock "era"). The original pickguard on the white one was mirrored.

I had a Hamer Gary Moore special back in the day... 1980s. These days I have a vintage lemon drop, a vintage 62 icon red Strat fitted with Hendrix guage strings , a sunburst tokai Firebird V with Gibson mini's, also a red Korean Firebird VII with vibrato and all gold hardware, also a vintage SG junior and a Marshall DSL 5 combo for the bedroom😎🤘👍🌈

I now own the Gibson Les Paul Double Cut (30 mins 37 seconds) I bought it around 2007 from GAK in Brighton. It had huge strings on it that has twisted the neck a little but it does sound good.

The one live gig I really loved was the monsters of rock gig 2003 and then of course I saw him play the red Strat at the Strat pack gig in 2004. I was also lucky enough to get tickets for the Brighton Dome 2 years running...2008/2009 I think!

Gary's tech said his 61 was stolen either on the way to or while on tour in America. Gary sent him to pawn shops along the tour to buy a few guitars including a replacement strat for the 61. He found a reddish 84 strat that Gary really liked and it was that 84 that he played Red House with at the fender strat 50th anniversary concert. What a performance! If Jimi Hendrix could stand and shout he would have.

Very well researched Ramon! A couple of points just to add for info - Gary also used another guitar on tour with Greg Lake - a metallic red Charvel (?) Strat type with 2 humbuckers, tremolo and a maple neck (l have some photos). Also, the leopard print guitar finish was definitely fabric, not painted - l remember Gary saying that it stank (!) after using it on stage when G-Force supported Whitesnake on the UK tour. I didn’t see any of the shows but do remember seeing a live photo when a gig was reviewed (probably in Sounds) and reading his comment later :).

Wow that was a great piece of work. So much amazing info but I have to tell you about the one you missed out, which has a great story. It was a Gibson Les Paul, 59 Standard Reissue 2004 that a fan ( i would love to know his name) bought him as a personal gift and according to guitar tech, Graham Lilly, Gary used it as a dressing room warm up. He must have had a great affection for it, taking it with him to Korea, Japan, Russia and I believe the Ropetackle Centre at Shoreham by Sea to guest with his old pal Buddy Whittington. See KZbin Buddy Whittington featuring Gary Moore....All Your Love. Crosscut Saw. That Ain't Right. Night Life. Grits Ain't No Groceries. This wasn't an official gig for Gary and my theory is that, living nearby, he just took this guitar to jam with Buddy. If anyone can add more facts i would be most grateful because on 29/06/2016 I had the unbelievable good fortune to have my bid for £5k accepted at Bonhams, and become the very proud owner of this wonderful instrument. Just to hold it sends a shudder down my spine, the strap smells of Gary's perspiration and I feel connected to the greatest, by far, all round guitarist that ever existed. God bless you Gary and thank you for the music.

Great video, I would like to point out one little detail. Ibanez RS530. As I tried to observe photage from Out in the fields video clip, you can actually see that he wasnt using that pro rocker tremolo, I think he throw it out and put a set of floyd rose system, except you can clearly see that string lock was original part and they didnt changed it.

Thanks so much for the incredible detail on Gary’s guitars! Question: Was the ‘59 Burst Gary acquired (late 80s/90s?) the one that Ronnie Montrose tried to get back? I followed that story closely because I was close to a number of 50s Les Pauls that were “nicked” or lost back in the 70s and emerged 20-30 years later after being acquired by legitimate collectors/players. There are quite a few. Lastly, did Gary’s family auction off his guitars after he passed? I really hadn’t heard one way or the other. Thanks again for the incredibly arduous work you did on this video! It is amazing…

A red , Chuck Barry Red. Guitar mentioned sounds like it must have been a 345 or 355 according to the switches you described, after the removal of those features it may had been similar to a regular 335... thank you for your attention to details and your post are excellent.... JD

Amazing research, well done. One guitar not mentioned here was another Charvel, a dark green Strat type thing with one (bridge) pickup that he used on the first Greg Lake tour. Unfortunately my ticket stub for the night that I went (Hammersmith Odeon in London) has the date 30th October then the year got torn off! I would assume that this in 1981 as that is the year Grey Lakes LP came out and I know they were on tour that autumn. Now this guitar sustained a bit of damage that night as after hitting the last chord of the gig Gary threw the guitar into the air and walked off stage leaving the guitar which came crashing down on the exact spot he'd only just been standing on. I spent the entire gig leaning on the stage so was only about 30 feet away and had already deduced by this time that Gary was in a very angry mood by this time for whatever reason? The guitar didn't break but would have sustained at least a nice big dent at a minimum. Gary played gloriously that night, using mainly the green Charvel but also the Salmon Pink Strat for Parisienne Walkways etc. the only non Greg Lake/King Crimson number they played that night. I saw Skid Row in 72/73. Gary played a Les Paul , presumably Greenie, and a white strat for slide. Amp was a Hiwatt combo.

Enjoyed the video. Lots of interesting detail. Wonder if you know if Gary ever owned a Firebird with the pale mahogany finish. Back in about 1990 I tried out one of these at Guitar VIllage and was told it had been owned by Gary Moore. I didnt buy it, as it was really battered. This was before beat up guitars were considered cool.

The original Gibson signature was Lemon Burst.. I had one. The black fender in DDIP was a model called Hot Rod, original floyd rose and a dimarzio paf pro, I had one.

I'm trying to find a photo of Gary using or even a shot of the guitars with his Pink Strat with EMGs and a Floyd Rose, it was a partscaster built out of a few guitars and mainly used as a backstage/rehearsal instrument I believe. I still have it here as his tech sold a 335 and this strat in or around 1993-94 and i bought it before it even made it to the guitar shop floor.

I’ve heard it said that Peter Green only intended Gary Moore to borrow the burst but I’m not sure that adds up. You wouldn’t tell somebody to sell their own guitar, give you the money for it and in turn I’ll let you borrow my guitar. That doesn’t add up with anyone much less Peter Green and the state he was in. It’s far more likely that the commonly known story of him having Gary Moore sell his SG and take the money for the burst is correct. It almost has a cynical feel to it that the other story would surface. Basically using Peter’s illness to make Gary out to seem like a scumbag, or perhaps to add an element of doubt whether he is/was the lawful owner of the guitar. It just feels scummy to me.

Cheers, great video on Garys guitars. I learned a bit and didn't know he sold his Greeny guitar in 2006, I thought he'd always just had it. Other than that guitar, my fondest memories were of Gary murdering that Gibson Melody Maker on the Black Rose tour 😆 One guitar you left out was the BC Rich Mockingbird he used on the "Do Anything You Want" video with Thin Lizzy. Not sure if these were loaned to the band or whether he owned it.

The white charvel pictured in the group photo and on the dirty fingers album cover is not the same one used on WF tour etc. The one on dirty fingers cover / group photo only has 21 frets. The white one used as the donor had a mirrored pickguard and matching matching white headstock. The red and white charvels were modified in 1985 which is when he started using them. He was using both of them by September 1985 as he used them at the Manchester gig for Run For Cover.

Just 2 (important) notes: 1 neck pickup was checked in mid ‘80s and the interior of it was factory stock, so they did see how the out of phase thing came from the magnet polarity. 2 The ‘Gary preferred the other Les Paul’ thing isn’t true. And it’s a thing which started when he sold Greeny, before giving interview in which he explains that he was forced to sold it to repay the tour deleted dates due to his July 2003 left hand tendon injury gone bad into an infection. People looked at the thing and did say ‘oh, he sold Greeny, not Stripe, he likes Stripe the best’. Not at all, the only reason is that Greeny had more historical appeal, obviously, and worth more. Gary always remember how much he loved Greeny after he sold, and always told he was forced to sell it.
