Really enjoying the recent content with vintage guns! So much more fun and interesting than modern offerings. Thanks for sharing and appreciating this aspect of the sport!

The gun reminds me of a really good driver Jag XJ6. Old, complete, high mileage, but you can still smell the leather.

in the same boat as not being the average spec (6’4”) but there is something about being adaptable and able to shoot guns that don’t fit. I have a few that for sentimental or historical value I won’t alter.

I would love to see a video on your opinion of classic American shotgun brands. Brands like A.H. Fox, L.C. Smith and Parker Bros. I think it would be extremely interesting to compare them to the major British makers.

If you like to get it clean and free of old crud. Disassemble the action partly, remove all metal from wood. Find and ultrasonic cleaner, heat up the liquid, submerge all the parts and let it run a few programs - a few hours on total that is. You will be amazed of the result.

I love taking a SXS out now and again there’s a lot of fun to be had when your breaking everything with a scrapy old gun I’ve a £150 spanish BLNE that’s currently in bozard’s being extended and can’t wait to take it out again in the mean time i’ve started looking for another SxS there’s so many old guns out there but finding a good one at reasonable money is hard without it being as mentioned !

Like a fine wine, boat or lady they get better with age. That Woodward has plenty of stories to tell. It’s seen a lot of use. Sleeving has given it a new lease of life. A little gentle cleaning to preserve it, and Johny it will last your lifetime and still be good for your children. But use it and lots more stories to it. I have a Jeffery 410 that is in far worse a state, but it is beautiful. But a few knocks and hard wear has just made it more so.

A local Dorset Estate blue blood son shot with a pair of Purdey Woodwards.These guns sported a semi pistol grip and were pretty stunning as I recall back then in the late 70's and into the 80's.

Even on this side of the pond we certainly know what Woodwards are. Personally, if I were to choose from among Woodward, Purdey, Holland and Boss SXS's of the same era, it would be a Woodward for me. O/U it would be Boss, of course. The Woodward arcades on the fences and the integrated engraving sweeping onto the bolsters of Stephen Grants sets them apart.

I bought a A Nestor of Limerick circa 1865 . It’s a sidelock hammer side by side 12g . 30 inch Damascus ribbon steel barrels and maybe grade 2 wood . It fits me very well and smokes clays . I got some 12g solid brass cartridges and loaded them with 60 grains of black powder with 36 grams of no4 lead shot and felt like a country gent . Had a few issues spotting the second clay through the smoke though 😂 . Amazingly engineered gun and only cost me £150 from the guy I bought it from running 28g Elect select 7 1/2 steel through it 😣. There was no damage and after a strip , clean and re rust blue on the barrels I feel I can hold my head up at any venue with this gun .

Lovely gun, Woodward is one of the best of all time. I wanted to ask if you would keep an eye out for my favorite english gunmaker, Hussey. I would love for you to showcase some of their finest, an imperial perhaps. They are an underappreciated maker that your audience may not know much about.

Its nice to see someone rescuing diamonds like this in the ruff. Over and unders mostly do nothing for me except high end ones. But side by sides are fascinating no matter what condition they are in. In your opinion what would you expect to pay for a gun of such a high end maker but in such a condition?.

Your absolutely right. We get so screwed on shotgun prices. A local shop tried to sell me an old Spanish SxS that was so bad the thing rattled like a can of bolts and the lock up was toast. He wanted $2700 for it. I voiced my grievances and got the good ol' "I know what I got!"
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I feel bad For the person who ends up spending the full whack of $2700 on that gun, genuinely believing they have purchased Spain’s answer to purdey. I feel worse that they may go out into the world and convince similarly ignorant folk that this fallacy is in fact gospel (the fallacy here being that junk is worth money). Suddenly, the belief system that scrap guns are as valuable as quality ones has spread like a plague. Until finally, after years of gaslighting, I go out and happily spend £6000 on a baikal… Edit - apologies, long day.

@@tgsoutdoors Good grief! Had to read that twice. I think I understand your point. Many years ago I went pheasant shooting with 4 friends. Though I have a number of guns, I decided to bring a Greener from 1901. Certainly not a top echelon maker but still it just feels right. My friends were surprised and the dog handler was somewhat aghast. He said something to the effect of, "Haven't seen anything quite like that. Do you know what you are doing?" Told him that I loaded my own 2.5" shells. When I was on target before my friends could shoulder their autoloaders and pumps and my birds were dead on the wing they came to acknowledge the benefits of purposeful design and good execution. They soon "made" me shoot last! Still have that gun.

That’s a surprise, not too many years ago several high end gun shops in the UK would send most of there unsold stock off to US. I always assumed that that the best vintage stuff ended up over the ‘pond’?!?!
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnreed3576 The costs to export must be substantial since we see so few quality older British guns over here. Some years ago I heard that our State Dept. complained to the British Gov't. after some guns they allowed to be exported to the US blew up. In fact our gov't. was acknowledging that we, on the whole, are stupid and know nothing about chamber length, barrel thickness, shell pressures, etc. If we can stuff it unfired into the chamber, we expect the gun to handle the explosion. Often it actually does! Superior Steel is probably a death sentence for the practice of exporting elegant old doubles to the US.

That gun is a white canvas. Refinishing the stock and fore end with a sort of reddish brown finish, re-blueing the trigger guard and touching up the action and side locks, and of course re-blueing the barrels... that gun would be even more beautiful than it already is. It can be pricey though
@jackbriscoe1504

I wouldn't do a thing to the gun, its well worn sure, but that wear has a certain beauty to it that refinishing would destroy. The patina on the stocks is what really sells that beauty.
