For the $3000 price tag it almost sounds like they practically quoted to replace the entire furnace unit. Where I live I just helped a friend replace his forced air furnace. The 2 local heating contractors quoted him $4100 and $4450 respectively which I thought was fairly inline with current prices but he decided to replace it himself and he bought a new unit for $2200 and we were able to swap it out over the course of about 3-4 hours.

Maybe 30 min drive time to and from customer location = 1 hr. 3 hours to diagnose, troubleshoot, help customer pick new fan, install it. That's 4 hours. $1,500 ÷ 4 hours = $375.
