Al Snow on Toxic Fandom Ruining Wrestling
WWE Legend and former ECW & TNA star Al Snow discusses how the very vocal minority of current wrestling fans are being listened to way too much by the powers that be in the major companies as they're playing the shows towards those minority fans that will watch either rather than the general public who are more interested in just being entertained by the best product possible.

While he's not wrong in what he says here, the majority of the fans just want to watch entertaining, well written product and to not be treated like idiоts. They have the right to be vocal when they get served trash shows, with boring wrestlers shoved in their faces.

I doub't Al Snow is saying fans aren't allowed to have opinions and criticize shows and wrestlers. He is just saying that wrestling smarks from the internet shouldn't have a say in the booking/creative decisions of wrestling promotions, especially if they've never even worked in the wrestling business themselves.

Nothing is shoved in your face. Change the channel or watch a different show, and if you can't find wrestling you like on any of the 8 or 9 shows going year round you just don't like wrestling and should get into something else. I did that a couple of times and later I gave it another shot and found new things I liked.

Today's fans really are the worst part of pro wrestling currently. The fans who go on Twitter and launch into frenzied post-match screeds aren't even making a difference beyond finding other fans to argue with whenever they do this in the first place. I read recently where Triple H was telling a reporter from either Sports Illustrated or USA Today that WWE have changed their philosophy of social media simply because the feedback they got from it mostly led them astray because that type of online feedback turned out to be inaccurate reflections of 90% of their fans. They found that listening to the perpetually outraged fandom is foolish. Triple H said the knee-jerk responses you get on Twitter forced WWE to alter their social media policy altogether. Nowadays, WWE has a company wide mandate of only using social media to promote with, but to never use it as a source of feedback because it's disproportionate to where 90% of fans are.

Somehow it is even worse. Back in the pre-google days knowledge meant actually being able to recall certain facts from memory or at the very worst knowing where to look for them in the scientific literature. Nowadays terminally online mfers genuinely consider stuff they'd literally googled moments ago to write their snarky reply as their own knowledge. They think that they can have discussions and arguments on very niche professional topics armed with nothing more than a search engine. At the end he basically described AEW in a nutshell. Made by a mark to cater to whiny marks and full of wrestlers who made money on being a living meme for whiny marks. I've always hated the term "smark" too as it implies somebody who is a mark for wrestling isn't one, you're not smartened up to the business because you read some websites with some insider notes. If you care who wins or loses in a fake fight and who holds a belt that's not won in a contest then you're a mark. Doesn't matter what you know or you think you know, the fact that you like a certain wrestler and want them to win makes you a mark. The end.

Al Snow is 100% correct here. People back in his days and before watched wrestling to have a good time and be entertained by the CHARACTERS and storylines that they were watching. Nowadays these fans have made wrestling look so corny by overrating these dull, boring and dorky "technical wrestlers" with no characters. The fans that Al Snow is talking about are these weirdos that think that goofy Asuka woman is a real life fighter beating up a bunch of people in a bar/nightclub all by herself like it's Streets of Rage just because she does kicks and rest holds. These fans today are so toxic that they would dox your personal information and threaten to kill you or your family for simply not liking The Miz. Look at how they reacted when Roman Reigns won that Royal Rumble, or when Goldberg won the belt a few years back. I’m reminded of a MMA match I saw, years ago, between two fighters who were both excellent ground fighters. The match went to the mat and stayed there. The boos from the crowd were deafening. There were chants of “Boring! Boring!” A lot of these fans consider themselves “experts” on the sport, might even train themselves, but what they really wanted was to see was a highlight reel boxing match. The referee had to stand them up a few times because the fight kept going to the ground…for MORE booing. I was stunned by the ignorance. I’m far from an expert (I wrestled in high school and graduated from there in 1981 so we know what’s up LOL), but there’s a lot to see in a ground match…if you know how to look. Great comment 🫡🎖️

John Noreck i went to an Indy show in Vegas... Its Vegas, of course I was drunk as a turd. They brought out the heel as a native american and he spoke cherokee and hated americans.. and I booed the guy, screamed you suck, but the dude totally got over as a Heel. Any ways, by midcard I had to relieve myself, and there was the heel.. He looked at me like “awww fuck, this mark” I told him he killed, and got over as a great heel. After that he was cool as fuck, and invited us to Phoenix for the next show, I guess we riled up the crowd... It was a great experience. Maybe because Al is used to the big time, he hates fans, but the Indy guys, the guys who are performing at a Rec Center in front of 40 people for $25 a night, they like fans

Great re-up. I think what's lost on some people is that even going back now and watching clips from the 80's or so, we think we see those days in a new light, but we don't really. The quality of the creative content, from writers, to bookers, to the wrestlers themselves was at a level that's not seen today, because of whom the business caters too, the toxic fans. Put another way, I don't give a shit if it's worked, go ahead and fool me, I'll allow my own suspension of disbelief. I don't need insanity and stupid story lines to do that.

It's funny how the know-it-all prick fans can be so vitriolic when stating their opinions on particular matches/shows yet someone like Brian Zane (Wrestling With Wregret) who has some form of true knowledge of the business, having been a worker himself, is very tame in his opinions on a match that he would rate low.

The thing I love about this extremely articulated explanation is that it can be applied to other situations that constantly occur other than fans of the wrestling world. He is also describing the goofy idiots who criticise movies and tv shows like Star Wars or Game Of Thrones. People who think they have knowledge of the process of writing and directing and even casting, and think that they can know how to do these things better. He is absolutely right, these people are so dumb. And I hate them too, because they ruin it for everybody who just simply wants to enjoy the art that has been made for them to enjoy.

im 43, got into wwf wrestling as a young kid around 85' or so.. and was naive but it was entertaining, then saw wcw and georgia awa etc, and it was even better cause wasnt silly gimmicks, but then around 93 or the wwf product just turned to crap.. ive tried but just never could get into as much as used to...! its hard for me to understand who the current wwe fans are, they must be either kids or really pathetic or dumb adults, maybe some older guys who like wrestling and have no other options... cause if you watch any wrestling the crowd is so much diffrent, they are still, no excitement, they are just there! the product is crap, and you know its all a production, so how can you get into it ? like heenan explained the magic is gone, the suspension of disbelief is gone, and there is no heat anymore to create the energy of the fans, people say its no diffrent than watching movie, well i dont enjoy bad movies either... they at least used to make good event, now wrestling is the equivalent of a charlies angels full throttle or, nic cage wicker man, a parody of what wrestling was !

And now it's just a boys club, circle jerk party where these emotional weirdos all drool over the same thing. And let's not forget how completely fickle they are. I disagree with Snow. Familiarity breeds contempt is just a saying which is meaningless without context. By that logic, Hulk Hogan must really fucking despise pro-wrestling now because he has seen it from the bottom to the top but that does not seem to be the case. We should like our parents much less than strangers on the street because we know more about our parents (on average). It's true that a fan will never have the kind of insider knowledge or the skills involved in actual performance like an actual wrestler but saying they cannot know or have an opinion on anything is blatantly false. Some things are pure conjecture, opinion, rumors and lies and others are not. Most astronomers have never been to space but they know things about space that astronauts will never bother to look up. Meanwhile astronauts also have some knowledge that astronomers never will have. There's the concept of "silent knowledge" which refers to knowledge and understanding that's hard to transmit to another person. Presumably a wrestler will have a lot of silent knowledge about the business that a fan will never have and obviously the wrestler will have seen things the fan will never access have to but when it comes to things that are a matter of public record a fan can know plenty.

“Opinion is the lowest form of human knowledge.” That is PROFOUND on several levels. I’m old enough to remember Jack Briscoe as NWA champion and saw Superstar Graham win (cheat) the WWWF title from Bruno Sammartino. I’ve come to believe that the loss of “kayfabe” took a lot of the…magic?…out of wrestling even though I’m still a fan. But even after all these years, and all I’ve seen and read I don’t kid myself that I “know” a business I’ve never worked in. It’d be a great thing if the false experts would just sit down and shut up…

I get what Al is saying here and I do legit agree. But how can fans voice their opinion then? I'm sure he's not implying that wrestling fans simply can't or shouldn't spout their opinions. I mean, lets be real, there's no way every single fan will be able to gain the experience of actual wrestlers. I understand not spouting out uninformed opinions, but the information fans get online and in other outlets is the only info they have. They can't all become pro wrestlers to be able to say, okay now I have the information AND the experience, now I have the right to spout my opinion.
