Why forgive those FR issues (6:50) when they have DSP baked in?
@KanyeWestFan69
@KanyeWestFan69 2 ай бұрын
So true, companies are just lazy because mainstream people have piss poor standards for sound quality. They’d rather go for the useless hires stickers that can get normies to buy the headphones rather than spending time making a good dsp tuning
@metal571
@metal571 2 ай бұрын
I was kinda thinking the same. Even if the driver has a wonky natural response, with all the DSP onboard this thing they could have tuned it with a much better default profile
@jackjack3874

Do you think Resolve means that to implement as good an ANC as possible, the FR had to be that way? so the tuning followed the ANC optimisation?
@lisztomania1901ful

unfortunately Sonos simply does not have required DSP talents and capability to do this simple thing right.
@MayaTlab
@MayaTlab 2 ай бұрын
There's only so much you can do with DSP (or even passive tuning) when the headphones' FR will vary from fit to fit or between individuals because of coupling issues. Their feedback system ensures that when it's turned on the FR at low frequencies will be more constant than most passive closed backs (a severe problem with most HPs of the latter kind), but above 500-800Hz it may more or less vary (cf. one of the graphs). Some ANC headphones have severe coupling issues in the 1-5kHz or so range (ex : Bose HPs - not because of their active systems per se, but perhaps related to acoustic compromises made to maximise the feedback ANC performance below 800Hz or so), IDK exactly where the Ace would fit in that picture, but it could have complicated their tuning. But perhaps they could have done a better job still - the way the bass response is shaped in the range where they can precisely control it is a bit off, and the 6kHz or so peak seems common to both fixtures (but perhaps slightly shifted), so...

@GadZookz 2 ай бұрын
Thaks Resolve! Your review pretty much nailed it. Compared to the Bose Ultra, the Sony XM5 and the Airpods Max, the SQ is unremarkable. One thing they might have done to give it an advantage would have been to increase the battery density to make it a true Wi-Fi device but without the SQ fundamentals solved first this probably wouldn’t have helped. As things now stand the QC Ultra sounds better on aptx lossless.

Any remarks about the app? Sad that these ANC headphones reviews have been missing the app part, which with a good EQ could potentially solve all frequency response issues. For instance I'm a very happy owner of the Sennheiser Momentum 4, which sounds amazing but only because it has a decent app where I can input my sound preferences and it stays saved into the headphones.

I do not understand.. they have the ability to use DSP... if they tune relatively close to Harman OE2018 (slightly warmer with a bit less low treble) they know knowledgable reviewers will most likely like them... is their target audience people that do not care about audio and would not see a review or measurements? or consumers that follow reviewers that do not know about sound? i mean seriously..

There are probably some acoustical compromises in the design that you can't really fixed with the eq. Or they just don't care, because majority of the consumers don't.

@MayaTlab
@MayaTlab Ай бұрын
All ANC headphones with a feedback system feature a mic inside the space where the ear is and all will be comparatively more resistant to leakage or pad compression (but some designs will work better than others). The AirPods Max actually are a bit more sophisticated than most other feedback ANC systems (for one the systems they use can continue to adaptively EQ headphones even when the feedback system is off).

They came closer to the performance I have with the Hifiman Sundara. On this one, EQ is so limited and there are real technical limitations that I feel can’t be resolved even with a decent EQ. I think those sound okay compared to other products in this category, but their pads are very itchy for me and i had to send mine in for repair multiple times, because apparently something inside them just corrodes due to regular use (inside, at home, watching movies on the couch). I suspect that these companies have data that shows that "normal" people like this sound. Lower mids peak = "the bass hits hard" and treble peak = "they are super detailed". Otherwise there would be no reason for a headphone that uses DSP 100% of the time not to perfectly align with Harman or a similar reasonable target. I have to believe it's a choice, they can't be _this_ stupid.

Sorry my friend but this review seems to have failed to realise what the Sonos Ace was primarily made for, and it's not for us audiophiles to enjoy our critical-listening music, with a Harman-tuned pair (in the case of many here), nor for EQ warriors to tweak to their heart's desire, or rather to the venerated Harman curve.

Often, after experience, not everything that complex people tell you sounds real. You may like what they tell you is bad, and you do not like what they tell you is good, and you may even experience the opposite of what they say.

I've seen a lot of reviews for these headphones and it seems like they all focus on reviewing this for music listening. These headphones are meant primarily for movies watching. It kind of requires you to have a sonos soundbar (Arc supported , Beam gen 1 coming soon Beam Gen 2 coming soon). So you're watching a moving in dolby atmos it's getting late you don't want to disturb the neighbors or family but still want that surround sound atmos/spatial audio experience throw on these headphones. It's similar to what Apple has with their Apple TV 4k and airpod pros, max, and beats earbuds (which works amazingly well for movie watching btw). I haven't tried the Sonos Ace but I'm not invested at all in the Sonos ecosystem so it's a tough sell for me.

I purchased this strictly for watching movies at night, which it does well. Could use more headroom volume wise. I have a small head so this fits well, a little heavy as it does move around. I find it muddy when playing certain music. I’d definitely look elsewhere if you’re planning on listening to music.

I think a lot of the criticism is a bit unfair, I have audioquest nightowls for audiophile lossless through a dac, these are imho as good as most of the others Bluetooth cans around the price, but much more comfortable for long wearing than the AirPods Max, look better then the xm5’s and have the best reproduction of Dolby Atmos if you watch movies on a tablet or laptop of any headphones I’ve heard. Audiophiles don’t buy anc headphones for their nitpicking quality, cos they know a cheap pair of cabled cans will be better, doing a graph on these things is totally fair, but for most untrained anc wearing ears they’ll make people happy and I certainly feel no treble fatigue from them at all.

Because the nightowls are considered one if the worst headphone ever made. There is a reason it propped by 60% msrp in less than 2 years and was completely discontinued immediately after never to be replaced. It's that bad.

@@enjoshi-godrez8775 by whom I’ve also owned headphones 10 times more expensive that I didn’t like as much as the nightowls that had better reviews relatively, the thing with the nightowls is they are extremely flat curve wise and as a personal preference I like that as I can eq them if I want, it’s a shame you’ve seen fit to be apparently uninformed and abusive over a pair of headphones, there are many people that have written on the virtues of the nightowls for the reasons I’ve just noted.

@@Togoth-oz5dg uh I think I just attempted to understand the nature of the dog and the nature of anc headphones but again apologies I didn’t realise the heretical nature expressed to the church of geeks. Also, everyone has different preferences for usage and tastes for curve so much of this is relative, anc headphones by their nature are not the best sounding generally, maybe the focal bathys not withstanding. I use the Sonos for atmos specifically and they’re best in class for that, sorry if that offends anyone.

The Sonos Ace do everything good except for sound, whilst I found the T+A Solitaire T to sound exceptional, but do everything else poorly. Comfort, connectivity, ANC and transparency, physical controls, price = all awful, however, having tried most BT headphones out there, from the mainstream to the audiophile, these for me were the only ones sounding pretty decent with no EQ adjustment.. If only the two products could be combined into one...

I simply refuse to use Bluetooth headphones now - only hard wired - gets rid of and alleviates all of these issues - no codecs - no conversion - no battery issues - no microphones - all from source to headphones with no interference. I refuse to use any headphones for phone calls as well. Hence why I only use my Focal Celestee / Focal Clear MG / Sennheiser HD660S2 and Sennheiser HD800S headphones with my Fiio M17 DAC / DAP / AMP and no need to worry about all these issues.
