Let's call it ''the end of old good Hellenic Railways''....the last period of floorish, variety of rolling stock with less graffity vandalism and cleaner trains than today, old MLW locos and lots of freight action...from middle 2008 all these were reduced and until the end of the year gone. I was only 10years old when i captured these scenes. Although i was fiming since late 2006 these shots are some of the best (quality and steadybility). Enjoy the video, the pure diesel sound and the clean waggons.
Filmed in 2007 and 2008 and Edited in 2013 by Alexander Sikalias.

Greece was such a good place for the diesel enthusiast, but that has gone. Not to talk about all the lines which closed or were robbed from passenger trains. One has to be lucky now to see one of the few remaining Alco's, good that you have mixed some ADTranz locomotives in between the Alco's, just to remind you how boring these newer loco's are. Nothing can beat that chugging Alco sound.

What was that green engine at the beginning? It sounded great and not like an ALCo. It's just like in the UK, mate. All our old English electric, Sulzer, Maybach, Paxman, Rolls-Royce, Ruston and Mirlees engines have been replaced with MTU and GM rubbish and there are virtually no loco-hauled passenger trains at all. Those ALCos sound superb. You may already know about all these but check out any videos on KZbin of classes 14901, D9531, 17, 20, 25, 31, 33, 35, 37109, 37901, 37906, 40, 42, 47, 50, 52, 55, 56 and 73 to see what has gone or almost gone from our railways.

Hi William, this locomotives were built in 1973 by General Electric and they are composing the 220 class (A.221 - A.233) of Hellenic Railways Organization (O.S.E.). Always, the older the train is the better for us... however, as the years pass by, the technology is "creating" angly railways. Do you have any videos of the classes you mentioned in your chanel? You can also check out this photo in our site for further details about the locomotive you liked: hellenictrainspotters.piwigo.com/picture?/290/category/52-16_04_2010_aghii_anarghiri_station

The Hellenic Trainspotters kgogis Can you gentlemen explain what the "A" in the ΟΣΕ locomotive number signifies? My best guess is that it stands for "Ατμομηχανή". While we're on the subject, why do they still use the word "Ατμομηχανή" for diesel or electric locomotives when the word literally means "steam engine"? Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ.

yankinga The "A" in all diesel locomotives of Hellenic railways has nothing to do with the word "Ατμομηχανή". In general, the numbering system of Hellenic State Railway (Σ.Ε.Κ. (since 1971 ΟΣΕ) on the steam locomotives was based on how many axles each serie had. All the steam locos had two letters (for example: Λβ, Κα, Εα etc.) The first letter described the number of motor and "helper" axles and the second the size or the time of arrival in the country (for exaple Λβ were older than Λγ - have a look in the hellenic alphabet in order to understand better the order of letters). However, why our diesel locomotives have an A in their number is officially unknown. Only, Krauss-Maffei V221 that came in 1990 in Hellas did not took the A in their new number. In addition, our first generation's Siemens "Hellas Sprinter" took an "H" from "Ηλεκτράμαξα" in their number and some of our railcars have "AA" from "Αυτοκινητάμαξα" (automotriche in French - French were the official foreign language of Hellas until its replacement by English in the second half of 20th century).

The Hellenic Trainspotters I enjoy your videos very much and those by kgogis and MLWA450 as well. You all have a very good eye for subject material, scene composition and excellent camera and editing techniques. Thank you so very much for taking the time to answer my questions. I have read up on the various Hellenic Railways steam types, the Μα being the largest and most impressive locomotives in all of Continental Europe. I presume, based on your explanation above, that the "Μ" stood for 2-10-2 or 1-D-1 and the "α" signified that it was the first (and only) series of that wheel arrangement. I had the good fortune to witness an Μα type passing through Σταθμός Λαρίσης, when I visited Greece as a 13 year old in 1970. I had an 8mm movie camera with me but unfortunately the train surprised me just as I arrived on the station platform and I wasn't able to take the shot. I invite all of you to visit my channel where I have numerous videos of most of the main line steam excursion locomotives that operated in the US during the period from 1984 - 1997. These include the largest types restored to operating condition, including the N&W 1218 2-6-6-4 and UP 3985 4-6-6-4 articulated types. The earliest videos are from VHS masters and the later ones from Hi8 tape. I also have some Audio Only recordings of steam and diesel subjects there as well. I am probably older than all of you fellows (57 years old) and I grew up with mainly sound recordings and still photography, so I enjoy closing my eyes and painting a mental picture while listening to train audio, just as much as I enjoy watching videos. I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have about US trains and operations. Γεια σας.

yankinga We have subscribed to your channel since last night! ;) The Μα 1001-1020 was the last and the largest steam locomotives that came in Hellas as a war compensation from Italy. They took the M due to the fact that the M describes locos with 7 axles (as you said Μα are 2-10-2 or 1-5-1 according to ΣΕΚ numbering system). In general, in late 60's and early 70's the society's condition was a little bit complicated because of the "government" but these years was - as far as the railways is concerned - caracterized as the "golden" years. You are very lucky as you witnessed a legendary and impressive loco of our railways. Now, there are only two Μα, one in Rouf station - Μα 1002 and one in Thessaloniki Freight station - Μα 1013. Also, visit our website to see photos taken by the other fellows-members of the team and by me of course. All the best to you and have a nice day! :)
