BECMI and 1st edition shared a few monsters in name only. Sometimes the version of one edition far outclassed its version in the other. Demons were one such creature. They weren't monsters there to fight high level adventurers, they were incredibly powerful creatures that could harm immortals, and would willingly serve the entropics. Now found out the differences in not just motivations but power level as well.

Seems like an easy way to explain the discrepancies between demons in other D&D settings and Mystara could be the great barrier. Or rather, what happens when certain energies are trapped within. You've told stories of various gods that try to breach and are repelled, so what if some of their essence or whatever is left in Mystaraspace, just floating around. The Immortals don't want to touch it, for whatever reason, but some outsiders can gather some of it up. So instant power boost to Immortal levels. But the catch is they can't take it out. They only have that power on Mystara.

For the old school percentages, if you need them updated to current addition just divide by 5, 80% = DC 16 , 75% = DC 15. Thanks for the video you have a wonderful day!

If you wanna roll with Immortal-tier Demons, have them use some of the Immortal tools to operate on Mystara. Create a mortal avatar, or possess something to be extra thematic.

Mystera is like the special snowflake of dnd. No we don't have gods, we have immortals, no we don't have abyssal demons, we our special exalted demons! We're our own self contained universe divided from the rest of the multiverse! If there was ever a reason to awake therizdan the elder elemental, it'd be to ego check those smug prick immortals

Something that I don't get: why aren't Immortal boxed set Demons ruling the Abyss? If they can cast Wish at will, they can literally reshape the plane. So why haven't they ousted Pazuzu or Pale Night yet? And what does Asmodeus think about this regarding the Blood War? A single Immortal level Vrock outmatches most of the forces arrayed agaisnt the Demons on Avernus or in Gehenna. And what about the Yugoloths? Surely they want to make a profit off these ultra powerful Demons somehow. What I'm trying to say is that these Demons are too powerful to be allowed by the enemies of the Abyss to run around the Planes. What are the Devils doing to challenge them? What are the forces of Good, the Angels, Archons, Guardinals anf Eladrin doing about this? These Demons can easily beat minor Immortals. That should threaten the status quo on the Outer Planes.

Great question. It never came up in BECMI because there was a different cosmology. Which they changed again for the Rules Cyclopaedia/Wrath of the Immortals. And changed again later. I keep to the RC/Wrath cosmology as that was the one I started with. Mystara is kept in a different dimension to everything else and the similarities are just coincidences. I'm no expert on AD&D deities, demons or devils (so feel free to correct me 😅) but the power levels of the Immortals seem colossal in comparison. There's no contest.

Because the idea of one unified cosmology is relatively new in D&D. The Blood War was a Planescape thing that didn't really affect, say, Dragonlance. Eberron was a completely different cosmology, too. Traveling from, Krynn to Faerun was REALLY complicated in 3e, involving traveling to a completely different "great wheel" from where you originated.

@@templarw20 TSR was pushing a unified theory of campaign worlds as far back as 1989. They just didn't include Mystara until Lorraine Williams mandated the cancelation of Basic D&D. Simply put the ultrapowerful, Immortal challenging Demons from the Immortals set can't fit into the unified campaign. Given the chaotic dog-eat-dog natire of the Abyss, they would have curbstomped the Demon Princes long ago. Since Graz'zt, Lolth and Pazuzu are still running the show, these Ultra Demons either have a plethora of rules they have to follow, which doesn't exactly make them chaotic, or they never existed for more than a few days before the Demon Princes united to exterminate them, with a note sent to the Entropic Immortals politely informing them never to create them again.

I'd say that the Mystaran demons are more of an elite strikeforce. Good for raids and skirmishes, but _probably_ not numerous to actually take over other planes. On top of that those other planes are ruled by beings who are _more_ powerful than your typical Immortal.

Hmm. Never in my playing of D&D did I run into a demon like Lorne in the Mystara setting. Although I guess maybe Diaboli might have been close though the didn't like humans very much.
