Thanks Rhonda. I couldn’t believe the first guy. Joyce and I both looked at each other and said, “Is this guy for real?” He acted like we were interrupting something he was doing. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone! Anyway, tomorrow we see our Primary Care doctor to get a referral. (Ah, the joys of an HMO). Hopefully I can get some answers, explanations and options moving forward. I feel great with taking two blood thinners. Joyce and I are walking around the block in the morning. I have no problem with that. I know it’s not climbing mountains with 4,000 feet of elevation but hey, it’s a start. I just wish I knew what it’s going to take to get me back to 100%.

By the grace of God, I happened upon your video about older hikers, and also your video about your heart attack. it really hit home. I decided to return to work after being retired for 11 years. on the 7th of this month after arriving home from work, I experienced what I thought was a bad case of indigestion. I decided to go to the emergency room when I almost passed out. lucky for me my sons live nearby. They transported me to the ER, where after being given an EKG, I was informed that I was having a heart attack. To everyone who reads this, listen to the warning signs that your body gives. I'll see my doctor in a few days and I am determined to be back riding my bike twenty miles twice a week real soon.

I recently came upon your website. It is interesting that you did not have bipass surgery, I too have done two long distance hikes, at age 73 and 75. Last September, at age 78, I had what has been described as a silent heart attack. Three arteries were blocked, one at 99 %. After surgery, I have continued to be active, sought out a rehab program , and am considering a further 100 mile hike in the UK, possibly next year. Keep walking!

Sorry you had one, I had one in 2012, not near as bad as yours, to prevent future problems, I have changed to a whole food plant based diet, and this has helped a lot. I still walk the neighborhood most days, but going up in altitude such as Colorado is out of the question. Good luck, and drink a lot of water. Your blood lipid numbers are highly important now.

Thank you for your first hand information about hiking and equipment. You have encouraged me to pack lighter and dress more comfortably for plain air painting. Memories of hiking years in the Sierras fill me with gratitude for what my eyes have seen and filled my heart with love for all of God’s creation. Now I am 84. I’m glad each day to be alive. The earth is still under my feet and the sky above. Walks with my dog in the woods and on the beach have become daily “hikes” filled with wonder and talks with God. This is another trail.

Thanks for sharing Rev. Great story. Long story short. Im 64 and fairly active outdoors also. Several years ago I had my cardiac scare starting with an EKG during a routine exam. My concerned GP sent me to a cardiologist for a stress test. The cardiologist stopped the stress test mid way and told me I probably had 75-85% blockage of my "widow maker" and needed a stent. I said no Ill fix it with lifestyle change and let him monitor me. I later went to a second cardiologist and subesequently had a multislice CT. He was so concerned about the results in my CT scan images he scheduled me for an immediate angiography and told me to prepare for a stent at best and quite possibly cardiac bypass surgery. I was twighlighted during the angiography and was aware of the cardiologists amazment that once "inside" there were no signs of cardio vascular disease. He even called his partner into confirm during the procedure. I was sent home with a clean bill of health. All Im sayng is the angiogrophy is the "gold standard" of whats really going on in your arteries. All the other diagnostic testing/imaging can be subject to false readings and image artifacts as mine were. Be well and enjoy. Sounds like your doing everything right with diet and lifestyle.

I wish I had found your channel sooner. You had already completed the PCT but I went back and watched many. I was surprised with your heart attack video but I am saddened at hearing you didn’t receive the explanations and compassion you deserve from your Cardiologist. I’ve worked for the Mayo Clinic for over 35 years and it’s the only place I’ve ever received medical care from since birth. Sometimes when I hear stories of others, I’m reminded of how fortunate I am. There are excellent doctors everywhere and I will pray that your next one is a good match for you. Keep walking and keep doing your videos!

Thanks Deb. You are very fortunate to have received your medical care from Mayo. I had someone tell me that I probably “grew” the Collateral Circulation during my hike of the PCT last year. Sounds feasible! It’s probably what kept me alive.

My husband is 85 and had an episode in December where he spent 2 days in the hospital and he didn't have a heart attack but he is in heart failure with only a 32% EF function. He has always been an avid hiker and his only symptom in the previous months was tiring easily and hiking shorter distances. Our first visit to the Cardiologist post hospital was very disappointing. He did not give us any information just like yours except to just go out and enjoy life. Yes we now have a different Cardiologist and have found an invaluable wonderful retired Cardiologist NP that has explained so much more. Doctors are so overworked and burned out from covid especially since so many covid patients have heart problems afterwards that they start seeing patients as numbers to get through. Don't give up, just keep working to get them to see your real personality and life. We are still working on improving his EF function and planning camping trips and short level day hikes.

I'm sorry to hear this. You are doing the right thing-----get a second opinion and then possibly a third. You've got to understand what is going on in your own body and that's not too much to ask. And my sister "grew" new passages to her heart after hers were blocked also! Nature and God are great. One thing comes into question and that is, what has your past diet been like and if that is part of your problem, can you change your diet. Also, it is imperative that you stay on all your medications! Don't skip your meds and if you haven't in the past, start monitoring your blood pressure, etc. Knowledge is the best ally you have in this. God speed and I'll follow your progress.

I found your site today, 5/17/2022. It’s nice to see a contemporary out there amongst the young Turks. It’s good to see you back out and around following your coronary. I had my scare a couple of years ago with a 75+% blocked carotid. Successful surgery, all is well now. My first backpacking trek was in 1952 using WW2 surplus packs & tents...definitely not u/l. Ultimately over the years I refined my base weight to 28# including a Svea 123 & cookset. With expendables, ~42# for a 5-day, 2 hots/1 cold, at or above timberline, mid-late August in Colorado, usually with a 14er on the agenda. My last hike was a 3-generation family hike, 4 miles w/600 ft elev gain to a lovely alpine lake @ 10,100 ft in RMNP in 2017 on my 80th birthday. Good day! Two shot knees & an ankle has put me mostly on the sidelines, but blogs like yours keep me “in the game”. Keep on keepin’ on!

@TheHikingRev
@TheHikingRev 3 жыл бұрын
Kevin…I think you’re right! I just thought invasive interventions (stents, bypass, open heart surgery, etc.) were the only options but apparently my heart performed it’s own bypass. The doctor said my heart grew “tributaries” (collateral circulation) last year while I was hiking the PCT that provided blood to my heart past the blocked arteries. That’s why my heart attack was considered “mild” and I didn’t have all the typical heart attack symptoms. The doctor said that my heart problems came from genetics/hereditary (thanks dad!) and not diet or lifestyle. I’ve just got to let my heart rest and heal now and then I’ll be able to get back “on the road again!”

Lucky you! Seriously, I haven't been able to walk more than 1/2 a block because of leg pain so bad it feels as if it's going to explode. Doc at the VA says I have 40% blockage in the upper right femoral artery. I grew up in the Sierras, hiking all my life, so I'm presently fairly bummed out over the whole scenario. Not any fun when your leg just seizes up, hard as a rock, and absolutely refuses to budge! A stint or bypass is in the cards for me. 69 years young here.

Hello Reverend. Just found your channel with your heart attack video. I've been unfortunate enough to have had two heart attacks. The first at 45 in June of 2016, and the second last March at 52. The first one was a 100% blockage of the LAD (main artery on the left side aka the widow maker). I was up to normal quickly and did a cross country motorcycle trip that September. I suffered some damage on my second one. It was in the RCA ( main artery on the right side). Both heart attacks were stopped with stents . I now sport 5 stainless steel stents. In my opinion the heart attacks affect your mental state more than your physical state. It's hard to overcome that feeling of your body failing you. But you will! I look forward to reviewing your past hikes and sharing your future ones!

Sadly that seems to be too common of an experience these days in the medical system. As you are doing, we have take an active role in doing our own research, getting multiple opinions and actively managing our own care it seems. Have been there (with different issues) but understand how you are feeling. Best of luck and hope you are back on the trail soon and ahead of schedule! Just watched your f/u video of a heart attack. By now you must be back to normal and enjoying God’s nature. I had a quad bypass when I was 55. Now I am 72 and enjoying an active life camping and exploring slot canyons in southern Utah. A year later after the bypass I had 4 stents put in. Before the “cabbage” I was an active bicyclist and rode from SF to SD 626 miles. The active lifestyle helped me developed collateral circulation thus avoiding a heart attack. Now I can do what most 72 year old retirees do and some. Most important is continue to do what you love doing, listen to good music and trust in God. Ron

You sir have far more get up and go in you than many 20 year olds ! , your positive mindset will see you though this temporary phase , I am a similar age and cycle most days so activity is my god , recently out of the blue my back went into spasm and I could barely move the pain was excruciating ,after a month of total inactivity I started to walk around the lake a 4 mile trek , the first time took me a week to get over it , I then tried again , it was still tough but recovery time was 3 days , I felt the benefit , after 6 weeks I was back on my bicycle and now almost back to before my medical episode , Activity can be the best medicine self prescribed , so let those that just don't understand nature call rest , whilst we move to the beat of a different drum !

Thank you so much Vickie. I’m doing better. I’ve just got to be patient and let my heart heal. I had two major long distance hikes planned this year but I’ve had to pull the plug on both and consider this hiking season a wash. Oh well, I guess I could have had my Myocardial Infraction in the mountains of Colorado instead of a local trail here in the area, so I’m fortunate in that sense. I am so glad for your daughter. She will come back home a better person than she was when she left. Having faced this year’s challenges on Trail will reinforce her tenacity to face anything the world can throw at her. I missed the original post about your MI. What kind of MI did you have? Which vessel was involved and what were your symptoms? Did you have balloon angioplasty or stents placed? Are you a candidate for bypass surgery? Was a cardiac echo performed post MI? How were your ventricles functioning? What is your EF? Are you on a beta blocker? What kind of "blood thinner" are you on? (Higher risk of serious bleed with falls). Altitude can increase stress on your heart so consider acclimating or choose hikes at lower altitudes. Keep baby aspirin with you and chew four as soon as you have any cardiac symptoms and call for evacuation if possible. I would not plan any strenuous hikes until all of these questions are satisfactorily answered. Add magnesium and vitamin D to your daily supplements. Consider NAC. Wishing you all the best

Wow! I’ll try to answer all your questions. I had 3 blockages in my right coronary artery. 100%. My cardiologist told me that because I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail eight months before my heart attack and was in good physical shape, I developed secondary circulation, which basically saved my life. The only symptom that I had prior to my heart attack was an extreme lack of energy. My cardiologist told me that I did not suffer any damage to my heart. I am taking two blood thinners, 81 mg aspirin and clopidogrel. I do bleed very easily so I have to be very careful. Three months after my heart attack. I had three stents put in my right coronary artery. Since my heart attack, I’ve completed two long-distance trails the John Muir Way in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the Pinhoti Trail with no issues. I’m just a little slower than what I used to be and I can’t fly up the mountains like I used to.😁

Great story! One solution that I have come across is Cayenne pills. Reasonably priced at less than $15.00 but very effective. Heard about this from a medical doctor (off the traditional path). These pills increase the ability of the circulatory system to increase the oxygen content of the blood flow. I am 73 and still hiking with my 75 year old wife who I met on Mt. Whitney. The best part of this is that it is pharmaceutical free. I take one before a hike and have had great luck with it. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I like all your videos and this is not exception. I’m so sorry about your heart condition. I developed Chase and Gianna about 13 years ago and did not know any better other than for the cardiologist prescribed me. I canceled the procedure he was going to do in my heart because I wanted to give a chance to natural remedies. I meant to say chest pain. I had blockages and some arteries in the coronary arteries area. One of the chambers in my heart was not receiving enough blood flow. I got to the point that I could not walk 20 steps without chest pain nor carry anything at all in my hands. Not even my plate with food. What really helped me big time was to eliminate animal product, do fasting with water intake two or three days in a row like, maybe, two or three times in one month period, I also need as much raw food as possible. I eliminated fast food, sugar, pastry, all the Bad oils. I detoxified my liver with Epson salt and olive oil and grape fruit.. I also detoxified my column with the oxy powder pills. The liver detoxification took me one night but I had to do it four times, once a month each. The colon detoxification took me six days. Now I feel a lot stronger. My life it’s more meaningful now and much better. After not being able to go back packing for, Maybe, five or six years, I went back to Back Packing and I am the happiest person ever. I cannot hike up the mountain as fast as before but I’m getting better at it as time passes by with my new lifestyle. I know that in the future I will be able to walk as fast, up the mountain, as years before. I don’t take any medication and I have not been back to the cardiologist for 13 years. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t go to one of those professional doctors that advise you in natural remedies and vegan food. I think they call them natural pathologist. I could be wrong about that. The most important ingredient in all this new lifestyle of mine is a lot of prayers.I also eliminated all the caffeine and green tea. Just to let you know, chocolate also contains caffeine and Termine which is worst than caffeine. This to drugs and drugs contained in green tea are very bad for your heart. Believe me. You will not find that much information about this in the Internet but a lot of information and it says that Coffee, dark chocolate and green tea is good for you. They do sound good for you but also some very bad for you. You better believe it. I’ve done a lot of research and I know what I’m saying. The walking exercise is what you should not stop but yes you have to take it easy for now. Also, you have to do your prescribed medication until you get better but you should try to eliminate them from your life, little by little but as fast as you can. Don’t try to do things alone but consult your doctor. Drink a lot of water and go to bed early. This is a must for everybody but especially for people with heart conditions like you and me. I also eliminated sold or reduced it to almost 9. Nowadays, I use potassium chloride to season my food. I’m not advising you to do any of this. I am only sharing with you what I have done based on all my research that I’ve done for 13 long years in the Internet. I meant to say, reduce the salt to almost none. I could tell you more details about my lifestyle but this comment would be a lot longer than what already is. Good luck and God bless you.

Thank you so much for the information Erick. It is very helpful. I have been eating fairly healthy for over 20 years, lost over 100 pounds. Since this was posted almost a year ago, I am hopeful that you have had a better experience with a more responsive doctor! I found out last year that options for "older patients" are not the same as for everyone else. While this may sound cynical, in my experience with my husband, I have found that once you pass a certain age the miraculous surgeries are not even an option, and sometimes, even stents are "not safe" so the only medical care you can get is prescription medicine and lots and lots and lots of doctor appointments.....wishing you all the best!
