Since 2000, every January, Bengaluru plays host to the Avarebele Mela. This 25th anniversary of the mela sees unique dishes, such as pizzas, pastas, berliners, jalebis and jamuns, all made with the avarekalu beans, otherwise known as hyacinth beans.
At the National College grounds in Basanvangudi, this mela attracts huge crowds. At the festival, people try various dishes, and also pick up the beans by the kilo.
