Part two will be live in the morning. It was BRUTAL. In the last 4 hours of April 6th I had to fight it out on my own until reinforcements finally arrived with less than an hour to go.

You shouldn't surrender such easily defensible terrain, so long as the enemy is inclined to attack it, as you did in your first attempt. Waterways seem to be exaggerated somewhat in this game, making them better defensive positions than they were in reality, so you should certainly defend them if the enemy needs to cross. The Hornet's nest is one of the better fortifications in the early game, because it has 2 positions that are mutually supportive in melee, making it a great anchor for your left flank. Also, you shouldn't just give up woods. Inside, you're not likely to take much fire, and if the enemy tries to charge in, they will be exhausted quickly, and your guns can open up with canister, (still very effective even in the woods.)

have you held any of those first positions successfully ? your first playthrough? , even if you hold spain field the church will be lost and then u can get cut off. holding any of the first positions is a bloodbath and the retreat is worse than biden in afg. yes i got my most expensive and vet unit captured covering the retreat, other units gone, most "surviving" units 50% casualties , yes i got the victory holding every position at the end. no i didnt restart because i know what to do now

You are doing great at this point, and you are in a fine position to win the battle. This battle is won by buying time and making the enemy fight for every inch of ground. If you fall back to another defensive line that is fine, but bleed the enemy every step. Keep your units in good cover, and try to catch him in water or in the open. By falling back you do shorten the line, which can be a good thing if you are taking too many losses. You also might have to turn off the artillery resupply so that your infantry has plenty of ammo. I wouldn't bother with a counterattack until all of the reinforcements arrive on day 2, at which time the battle should be a lot easier. The way the enemy is taking losses, the allied units should be able to eliminate the entire enemy force by themselves. I recommend that you fight this out until the entire enemy force is wiped out, this is an opportunity to reduce the enemy force pool and capture a lot of weapons. Good luck.

Compass.......after watching some of you vids, i have tried to hit the enemy even harder , when they are in the water trying to cross.
@SomethingCompass5 жыл бұрын
@@Galantus1964 I am delighted that this helped you in your game. Units in water are supposed to get a cover penalty and also a penalty for firing while in water. There is some uncertainty that all of the buffs and debuffs are applied all of the time, but what is very clear is that consistently hitting enemy units in water is devastating to them. I am happy to hear that this information has given you better results in your battles. And besides, it is just great fun to catch the enemy in water and crush him with a couple of shots to the face. Thanks for letting me know.

Shiloh shattered Grant's illusion that the South was nearly finished. Unfortunately it also reinforced Grant's opinion that defenders that have dug themselves into fortified positions do so because they're demoralized. (A common belief among military professionals at that time.) Sherman also said "He (Grant) doesn't give a damn what the enemy does out of his sight-but it scares me hell." During the Overland Campaign an Army of the Potomac veteran summed it up: "Ulyss doesn't scare worth a damn." One of my favorite stories about Grant was during a march in 1864 a regiment of veterans marched by a railroad and seated upon a flatcar, legs dangling over the side was a dusty Grant munching on a ham. They gave him a cheer and he greeted them with a grin and wave of the ham bone. Such a Grant moment inspired by his hero, Zachary Taylor, 'Old Rough and Ready'.

If the Civil War was fought to keep the Union together, why then, 3 years after it was over and southern states had their statehood restored, did the Union refuse to seat the representatives from the Southern states for the Congressional session that started in Jan 1868? And how many of you knew that the southern states were under Martial Law from March 1868 to 1877. All because they (along with Oregon, Ohio, and New Jersey) refused to support legislation which later became the 14th Amendment. And even among the northern states...if a state voted against the 14th, it was allowed to change its vote to yes, but if a state had initially voted yes and wanted to change its vote to No, that was not allowed!

Yes! You did the hold at the river strategy which works really well. Just keep them in place and just use skirmishers in the trenches to hold off his cav. The reinforcements will beef up the defenses but with how you are exhausting and weakening the rebel army, they are going to have a hard time getting to the landing before Buell shows up, and then counterattack tomorrow

Skirmishers are the way to go, a lot of micro but the only way to hold off the big units. Always have a unit shooting into their flanks. It looks bad when the skirmishers loose 5 men in a volley because they have low numbers, but remember one volley like that on your main units can kill 100 or more.
@panzerdeal87279 ай бұрын
Hold tight on your left. Johnston's plan was to seperate you from the river, gunboat support, and resupply. He gets on your left, he seperates you from Buell and Grant...and stops fire from the Tyler and Lexington, the gunboats.

I agree. You currently have very good command and control and are better placed to react to a developing situation then if you did a full withdrawal. Also you have a better understanding of his troop deployment now then if you were to move. You currently have a strong defensive posture on your right with a known area of concern being your left. If you were to move you will lose this situational awareness. I would look to move one Of the Brigades that are to the mediate west of the hornets nest to the north east with your skirmishes on the extreme flank up at the very north east corner of your line and then swing south hinging on the. Hornets nest. The gun boats in the past have not been the greatest but they have to do something, surely. If you can move you poor 10 pounders east a little more with their primary task to support the swing south. The centre at this stage looks to be the most unlikely axis of advance of enemy troops. The enemy most decisive course of action being a flanking manoeuvre around the left of your line, capturing the landing then rear flanking your remaining forces from the north, crushing them at Shilo church. This just my two bob worth (as we say in Australia). All the best Chris and you are doing very well considering what you are up against. That spawn of the 10 pounders would have seen them wiped out if anyone else was in command., well done mate! Look forward to part two

Yeah I'd go with this, just send some of the skirmishers you already broke off near the Hornet's nest to protect Pittsburg Landing. I'm not sure the AI is going to break this, would be nice to have 4 in recon to see for sure how many they have left but the gap has to be tightening fast with how many have been killed near the church area. Could possibly even consider sending Moore back as well if you're worried about losing him. Could slightly shift your line down to accommodate the brigade leaving.

I won the battle of Shiloh but it's such an rng roll to win it. I break off skirmishes from the main units in the first phase block the two reigments coming in from the far left and hold my arty in. I also push up a little bit so the enemy are in the river, water areas because they get negative cover in those and I unlesh hell on them. The problem with my victory is what the ai does sometimes the ai just charges 90k men into your line. My play style to is also poor with the union since in the game union troops have a negative in melee combat and southern have a buff to it.

37:42 this is my problem with this map, (and the game design in general) you need to memorize the battle to avoid this situation. there is also no gain to defend the minor sites, the gain is to kill the enemy from defensive advantage. In my opinion, the phases of the battle are the way compensate the horrendous UI without hotkeys. managing 60 brigades must not be a problem in other RTS if the have enough hotkeys. But here we have no control groups assignable, we don't even have the speed hotkey (+/-) that paradox games offer. every time I unpause, i have the same speed. in HoI4 for example I can use the KEYBOARD to manage the speed I want to play. so game-labs brings those phases with 12-15 brigades to manage clicking with the mouse, but the result is a thing I don't like.

Don't take the fortifications in a forest. You get more men in less space if you just sit in the trees and from memory better protection. This helps in defending as there is less"Surface" area for an attack, especially melee, and more fire power being returned. It weakens melee assaults and helps to hold the units flank as once it is pushed through the attacker is tied up by the surrounding units.

OMG I was freaking out on the first decision to fall back and hold Pittsburgh landing, enemy has tree's to cover their attack on PL so it's hard to hold. Slowly falling back while holding tree lines while they advancing in the open fields is better idea I believe, fall back when it's to dangerous to hold.

Really wasn't a surprise attack, noise discipline on the confederates was poor so the Union knew they were within striking distance, just inexperienced units that didn't have proper sentries posted nor procedures specified for when they were attacked. Fault wasn't with Grant or Sherman but mostly with inexperienced mid grade officers.

Some advice: DO NOT SECURE PITTSBURGH LANDING ON THE FIRST DAY. I cant tell you how it annoying it was that I was able to manuever my army to leave an entire open space for my men to slip right into Pittsburgh landing and capture it, hold it off with thousands of casualities, and then get a "proceeding to next day" message, to then have all my troops be reset off of Pittaburgh landing.
