On today’s episode, the History Guy tells two stories of harrowing passenger plane incidents in the 80s. First he tells the story of TACA 110, where pilots did everything right only to find themselves in an unprecedented hail storm - and that was just the beginning. Then he tells the story of China Flight 006, when a small technical error quickly cascaded into a disaster.
This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.
All events are portrayed in historical context and for educational purposes. No images or content are primarily intended to shock and disgust. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Non censuram.

I should think those fellows who landed a 737 on a narrow levee ought to be as famous as the legendary “Sully”.

The Taca 110 story was an episode of “Air Disasters “ on the Smithsonian Channel. I loved the ending where they showed Carlos Dardano with his son and daughter, who are both commercial pilots.

you all should tell the story of "black Christmas" when 4 airplanes crashed in Shanghai on the same day in the late 1940's due to bad weather. truly sad but after all, its history that deserves to be remembered

I'm a limited flyer, mainly because i have an unwarranted fear of flying, lol, although I love seemingly all things aviation. Never had the option to fly on a 747. Always thought it was such a beautiful commercial aircraft. At least as far as modern aircraft goes. I'm more of a fan of vintage aircraft. Still amazing that any of the ones mentioned here made it safely to their destinations. Thanks for the podcast, lady, and gentlemen!!!

Two great stories, and surprisingly, neither involves pirates.

Did the passenger in China Air 006 who rang the bell for cabin service so he could have a stiff whisky get his drink?

The second incident was recoverable, primarily, because the pilots had enough of the most valuable of all possible resources in a mid-air emergency: Time. The time to get reoriented, the time to understand what was happening, the time to make the recovery. This is why incidents in take-off and landing are so deadly: The low altitude involved deprives the pilots of the time needed to understand and respond to many possible problems that might occur.

It might be history that deserves to be remembered that when you cited the US relationship with Iran Air was in the days the Shah of Iran was in power and the US had a close relationship with Iran. In the present that past relationship with direct flights to Tehran just sounds wrong.

Any direct flights to Tehran now would be carrying something other than passengers.

Talking about the 747. If my info is correct, there was a pilot confiscated a 747 & pulled off a loop at a Denver air show.

Like THG has the ability to foresee the future. This episode would have been scheduled way in advanced , just a freak thing that the planes collided a few hours ago

Funny how the well written, educative and profesionally presented story still seems incomplete without the familiar face on the screen. Keep up the good job.

I like these because i watch them to fall asleep to, but with visuals i often cant close my eyes because i wanna see whats going on visually. With these podcasts i can just set it aside and close my eyes. Also, without any video to edit, we get content faster👍
