This episode was posted a week before June 6th, 2022 which marked the 78th anniversary of the D-Day landings. In honor of the enormous sacrifice by the many men and women who fought, planned, and supported that battle, today the history guy tells three lesser-known tales of heroism and sacrifice, just a few of the many meaningful stories of those first days in the battle to crack fortress Europe. First, the history guy tells the story of two D-day medics, Robert Wright and Kenneth Moore, who spent those days saving lives. Then the history guy will tell the oft-forgotten story of the Coast Guard’s contribution to the massive invasion. Finally, the History Guy will talk about the US Rangers and the 116th Infantry Regiment.

Thank you for this wonderful podcast. My father, Dr. Samuel Klein, was the Battalion aid surgeon who landed 2nd wave at Omaha Beach. He was wounded 2 weeks later and evacuated back to England. He was also mentioned in Earnie Pyles book, Brave Men. When the war ended, he was asked to see General Patton after his automobile accident. Thanks again for all your work.

My grandfather was on Sword. He didn’t say much but one thing he did tell me is that the worst thing was later on D Day when it got quiet. That meant the guys down the beach had stopped shouting for help. James Doohan, Scotty in Star Trek, lost a finger to friendly fire on D Day.

My dad landed on Omaha beach, second wave in. Once the beachhead was secure, he was then assigned to the 3rd Army, 3rd Armored Division under Patton as a tank driver throughout the war. RIP dad, you are my hero.

General Teddy Roosevelt Jr ,the son of President Roosevelt, was the only US General to land on D day and he organized the advancement from the beach. As he urged the men forward, the men looked up to see this "old man " moving and they said if he could do, we can Unfortunately over a month later General Roosevelt died of a heart attack. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and is buried next to his brother Quincy, who died in WW1, in France

It's amazing that these doctors and medics behaved like the doctors in the TV show MASH .Treating both sides casualties equally.

So, in my timeline this is August 2,2022. The introduction to this podcast (which contains previously released vlogs) placed the date prior to the 2022 anniversary of D-Day ?? Btw I enjoyed these stories by THG again

Thank you for doing this specific podcast. One thing that I don't like about Saving Private Ryan is the totally fabricated story. Spielberg could have told any soldier's story, and it would have been so much better.

@@davidfryer9218 not when these excellent podcasts are simply the best of KZbin. The vast majority of us enjoy the stories the history guy teaches and entertains us with. I've learned more about history from Lance than from ANY other source. And I am a better citizen of this country and world because of him. Thanks History Guy!.👍
