This was my first season watching hockey, and my how sports have changed. I remember two commercials in particular. One was a Cam Neely ad, where he was teaching a guy how to elbow people in the head going into corners, and an NFL ad that was just helmet to helmet collisions with helmets flying off while a rap song played over it.

Bourque's best shot at a Stanley Cup in Boston for sure. They even had Home ice advantage in the finals.

As an Oilers fan, the 1990 Stanley Cup victory is my favourite Stanley Cup victory. We did it without Wayne Gretzky.

Agreed. That Cup win cemented Messier as a real leader. Not only was Gretzky gone, so was Sather as head coach.

My personal favourite was ‘88. It’s the first playoff I was old enough to have livid memories of and have an understanding of the game. The 1990 cup was my other favourite. A grittier and well balanced team that year.

@@oilersridersbluejays in 1988, Wayne Gretzky scored the game winner over the shoulder of Mike Vernon. One of the greatest goals in Oilers history.

Bernie Nicholls is one of the most interesting players of all time. He ended up with a Point Per Game career, but kind of just lived off that season. I mean if you get 150 in 80, it did set him up to where he could then get 70 in 80 every year for about 7 or 8 years before the PPG catches up to you. A really peculiar player to me. I always thought he was the Wendell Clark of his player type. Better then many thought, but far from the superstar others made him out to be. Always played hard though.

In that trade where Adam Oates went to St. Louis, heading back the other way to Detroit was Bernie Federko, who had been a Blue his entire career at that point. Even though it reunited him with coach Jacques Demers, he didn't get as much ice time as he was hoping, which was one of the factors that led him to retire a year earlier than he originally planned.

Gretzky invited Howe out to see him break Howe's record, and IIRC, it took Gretzky multiple games to actually overcome that record and he started feeling bad because Howe was just following him around game to game until he surpassed it.

Petr Klima is intersting, he's talked about in the new book about how the Red Wings got all these Russians. He was one of the first guys in the Eastern Bloc to defect and the story is kind of hilarious

As a Oilers fan this is my favorite cup by the team. Once Gretzky was traded everyone said the Oilers were done and could never win another Stanley Cup and the Oilers proved everyone wrong. I also like this cup because with Gretzky the Oilers were so dominate sometimes there wasn't really much drama in the games. After Gretzky the Oilers seemed beatable and it made for a more exciting playoffs imo. This cup was more heart and grit then their others and and it also felt so good to shut up all the nay sayers.

i don"t understand the Bernie nicholls trade . beceuse after that the Kings never had a solid second line center behind gretzky and that was a problem Gretzky kings era!. of course they that sandstrom and granato(depth to wing) and they got 1993 finals but still..

Bernie Nicholls got traded at the all star game that season. I've heard he went on NBC during the game and tore a strip off of Kings' management for it. If true, it's probably why the NHL put in a trade freeze at the all star break the very next season. lol

Been waiting for this video for my other sliding doors question. What would've happened if the Jets had finished the Oilers off after leading 3-1 and if Hartford had held on to that 5-2 lead at home in Game 4. Maybe my Caps would've got the Stanley Cup Finals or even won it?

You're underestimating that extra gear players get in their game when they're playing harder for the win. We saw that in 2018. It wasn't the best Caps team ever, but they worked their asses off every shift.
