As someone who's an alcoholic and coming up on 14 years of sobriety, I can say that any form of addiction is a disease, and whatever the issue or substance that is involved is a symptom of that sickness rather than the core issue. An obsession of the mind is something that isn't true that we really believe (e.g. "I can have one drink and stop"; "I can win it back"; "I need to save that and can't throw it away no matter what"). All addiction centers in a mind that doesn't really work in a specific area and that can't see things for what they really are in certain respects. I hope Evander can admit that to himself and really wants help. Giving up the single-handed fight, surrendering to the situation, and getting help (treatment) is the only way, in my experience, that an addict can truly recover.

My grandmother was spending $90,000 a year at our local casino's. She was afraid to go by herself so I would take her. I took her 3 times a week for 10 years. I didn't have a lot of money but every once in a while she's toss me a $20 and say get lost. My grandmother would spend 12 hours a day gambling. When I wasn't playing I was studying and looking for a way to beat them. After 8 years of watching and advice from my cousin with a masters degree in computer science I found a way to beat them. For 2 years I took them to the bank until they figured me out. I didn't make millions but I made 10's of thousands of dollars. I didn't get rich but I enjoyed the extra income. My grandmother can't go anymore and I know to stay away. I know the loophole I used has been closed and I know the house always wins in the long run. Casino's are evil.

As a former casino dealer, I recount the first time I saw someone come into the casino, lose all the rent money, and the grocery money, and the money for the utilities. I felt really bad for the guy as he walked out of the casino crying and distraught. I didn't feel so bad for him when he came back the following night and was gambling money he probably borrowed from his friends and family to try to recoup his losses. He lost his shirt again. I probably felt bad for the stupid people in his life that enabled the loser to lose more money. Valuable lesson: If you are going to gamble never bring more money than what you can afford to lose. Leave your credit cards, bank debit cards, and the money in your wallet that you can't afford to lose, AT HOME, or if you are in LOST WAGES, Nevada, at the Hotel's front desk in the safe. Set yourself a limit on your losses, and have the wisdom and guts to stick to your self-imposed limit. And most of all don't try to chase your losses. You can get into a real financial catastrophe if you get into an extended losing streak.
@jeffreyclinard20024 жыл бұрын
Part of my orientation for a casino job (I was in IT, but everybody had to go through it) was recognition of problem gamblers. I was given a card to pass to anybody who needed help. The nature of my job (computers, not people) meant I never was in a position to do so, but you pick up things. Problem gamblers will justify almost anything. Shannon mentioned staying at a machine because it was "due". There is also staying at a machine because it is "hot". Few see the contradiction (if it really worked like that, the "hot" machine should be abandoned because it's paid it's dues, or, in the reverse, the "overdue" machine should be abandoned because it's "cold"). Those displays at roulette tables that show the last 10 numbers or so made casinos a fortune as people tried to see patterns where none existed. The truth is, crap dice, roulette balls, keno / bingo balls, and slot spins have zero memory. Unless it is broken, a roulette table that hits 00 five times in a row has no more chance of hitting it on the sixth spin than any other number. Kane has a lot of debt, and the bankruptcy means he's out of options to hide it. It will be interesting to see if any prepayment on his salary for this year (notably the bonus) will be added to his debts (making the Sharks one of his creditors). It's obvious he's refusing to play because his salary will be seized by the courts or his creditors. He's going to have to crash back to reality.

Yeah... For me personally CSGO skin gambling got me into gambling at like 13 years old... Right when I started getting money from a part time job. I was gambling basically all my money away that I was making because of those stupid skin gambling sites. And this addiction has lead to me doing things I am not proud of to get money to gamble/pay bills. I am not a bad person, and I would have never thought about stealing money. But my addiction to gambling had gotten really bad and I had lost all the money I had as soon as I got my paycheck for the month. I then stole from someone I love with all my heart to pay some bills. And I just ended up gambling that away too... And with the internet it is so difficult to stop. It's one thing to stop gambling at casinos. There have been hockey players who have been down and out due to mental illness caused by a concussion, and I am entirely sympathetic towards them. The people I know who've gotten in the most financial trouble were video game developers who suddenly started receiving advances and royalties. Financial advisors told them that to keep as much money away from the IRS as possible, they should use most of the money to keep putting downpayments on more and more houses, paying the mortgages with future royalties and the rent they received. That worked great until the video game crash of 1984, when their focus on minimizing taxes meant they were tremendously overextended. It was almost like a self-induced Ponzi scheme.

Personal accountability. "Excuses are just lies that you've told yourself to validate a failure or short coming", that is quote from one of my leaders, while I served in the military. I feel that it rings true here. The young and dumb is a favorite for a lot of people. I'm just an average person and I know that I am one catastrophic event away from being in trouble and this past year with Covid has made that even more clear to me. Kane has a luxury that most people don't have and that is the fact that he has come into a large amount of money based off of athletic talent. How hard would it have been to hire a financial advisor from a reputable firm to help manage and invest your money? He's human and as a fellow human I want him to pull through this and be successful but I don't feel sorry for him when it comes to failing to manage his finances. At the end of the day it is on him and it always has been and always will be. He's got himself in rough spot but he's also put his team in a difficult position should he choose not to play or even if does decide to play.....but for what incentive? He's not likely to be playing for any financial gain anytime soon. Just a bad situation all around.
@idiotidiot58214 жыл бұрын
Even if you have valid excuses to some parts of shortcomings when you stop putting the weight on them and put it on yourself you can push your self reliance up. This is more about a mentality thing and might not even be to this exact situation but it's pretty applicable across the board.

Gambling is a scary animal. My dad was a hardcore gambler on NFL and NCAA games. The bookie was a phone call away. He was luckier than most, meaning that overall he ended up close to even (at least to my knowledge). But several times he’d lose an entire paycheck - 100 hours in a steel mill - during a bad Sunday. We’d have to go to Grandmas for dinner because there was no food in the house. Many fights between my parents. It can destroy your life.

In 2002, the NFL Players Association set up a Financial Registration Program. Certified financial planners apply to the program, which includes an application fee and annual dues. The CFPs are required to have degrees, be licensed, have years of experience, be bonded/insured, have no criminal history or lawsuits pending, etc. Seeing what's happened to Jack Johnson and now Evander Kane, it's clear that the NHLPA needs to set up a similar program.

I hate giving advice to people when it comes to gambling, but if you're going to do it have a predetermined amount of money that you can lose and still be ok with it. I used to gamble at Blackjack and best thing that happened to me was going in with a $500 roll and having an 11 hand streak of pushes and losses on a table that saw all that money and what I was up disappear, walked out of the casino and haven't gambled since.

You see this a lot, I worked at a convenience store for a bit, and these people who are always saying they gotta choose between feeding their kids and paying their bills or buying medicine but still spend a couple hundred dollars a month in scratch offs and pick 3 and 4 tickets. So, it doesn’t matter how much you have, if you have a lot, you just spend a lot more than people who don’t, when you’re addicted.

Vegas native here. It’s almost sad how easy it is to gamble here. Even if you pretend the Strip didn’t exist, there are casinos all over town and slot machines in nearly every grocery store and gas station you go to. I know at least five people personally who have struggled with a gambling addiction. It’s no joke. You said it perfectly, it doesn’t matter how much money you make, you can still be consumed by it and chase that high of winning. It’s really sad.

Machines aren't programmed individually to pay out at a certain moment. All the machines in the casino are summed together to maintain a payout % for the whole establishment. Thinking a machine is "due" to payout is death.

Sports Illustrated did an article called "How and Why Athletes Go Broke" and ESPN did a 30 for 30 episode called "Broke". They go over a lot of the issues mentioned here, like gambling, lots of dependents, overspending, not knowing how to handle money so young... it's a story that's been played out in professional sports for years and it's still an issue, no matter how much the leagues try and help.

My friend's dad has a gambling problem, like you said whether in darts, poker, billiards, it's all about money. His addiction really factored into his divorce. Actually they had a dog they nicknamed "Gambler." Also, a friend of my dad's would get paid and go straight to the machines. He'd get my dad to sometimes pay him at the bar, so he could immediately gamble. It really is an addiction that can ruin your life.

Great video!!!! It can come at yiu from all sides too. Last time I was in Vegas, I used to go red or black on Roulette, but put in $100 and bet $20. Get $20 and then pay it out. Then maybe do it again and again. Eventually I won $200 just by being very random and opportunistic with it. I figured $100 gave me enough to play with to eventually get that $20 at some point. Well eventually as the days went on in Vegas it didn't and I was down $100. By the end of it, I just felt like a fool. Not doing that again. It can happen so easily though. Between that and the free booze, if you're gambling. Then not all the machines really give you an understanding of how much you're paying out at a time because they assign a random value to your money. If you feel like a fool after gambling, do yourself a favor and just don't go back.
