I agree, special jerseys stop being special once they have them every single year. We can revisit this in 10 years when teams like Vegas and Seattle might actually have some retro stuff to use.

On the CHGO Blackhawks Podcast, the Hawks’ ownership and business office people (Danny Wirtz and Jamie Faulkner) were asked how Reverse Retros are decided… They basically said teams are given the choice of three options that Adidas staff comes up independently, and that teams themselves don’t really get much interaction or creative liberty with Adidas.

Pure hearsay, but apparently Detroit's owners absolutely despise the RR concept and intentionally pick the worst of the options Adidas gives to them so they won't sell and only have to put them on the ice for the absolute minimum mandated amount of games.

However if Nike takes over, expect them to bring their "City" jersey concept that is currently used in the NBA in the NHL as well. Those jerseys are mostly ugly especially the Brooklyn Nets one from a few years ago.

The Australian Football League had a "Heritage Round" from 2003 to 2008, where all 16 teams wore guernseys based on old designs from their club history (or former teams from that same area). It even extended to the umpires for a few years as well, just to add an extra touch to it.

Change up the colours, either a perfect reverse or a different colour in a similar vibe.... they arent meant to be game changing beautiful jerseys... The Calgary jersey has been a big controversy among Flames fans from what I've seen but personally I like it. My only preference would've been to have the flaming C be smaller much like the original jerseys they are based on.

@@Art29Art29 Because the diagonal stripe it was the same design used in the '94 jerseys these are based off of. The jersey was short lived because it was fairly controversial back then too from what I know and the fact the Flames were not in a good spot in the late 90s doesn't help it's reputation. I think it'll look good on the ice though we'll have to wait and see.

Agreed on last go around for RR jerseys. It's an Adidas thing (for the most part), let it fade away with Adidas from the NHL. It'd be interesting to see the NHL adopt a City Edition concept the way the NBA does it. Obviously, hockey jerseys are basketball jerseys can't rock designs the same, but the idea on a hockey jersey would be new and allow teams to try new things, similar to what Montreal is doing with this RR. Just my thought

The only way the City Edition concept makes it to the NHL is if Nike takes over the jersey contract from Adidas. If another brand tries it, Nike will likely sue them.

I think there’s a lot of fun 32-team jerseys runs the NHL could try. Fan Created Jerseys: Like Shannon said. Let the fans design them and vote on the top 5. Colour Rush: They do these in the MLB. Design a jersey with a bright primary colour and then teams use them against each other. So rather than having red vs white or blue vs white, you get a gold vs green or purple vs orange matchup. Futuristic Jerseys: Go full Vegas. Chrome logos, weird striping, shadows, whatever you want. Yeah, they might be ugly but they would be really cool. Set Template: Guve all teams the same template to use. Same striping, same logo placement etc. and let each team add their colours to it and choose which logo they want. Literal Jerseys: Jerseys designed completely based on the teams name with no logos. Flames jersey is literally just Flames. Stars is a night sky. Wild is a forest with animals all over the place, etc. they would be UGLY but as could be cool to see for 3-4 games in a year.

With Adidas’ contract expiring soon, I don’t think there is enough time for another RR cycle. And the new retailer like Nike or CCM would want to do their own thing rather than recycle Adidas’. What I’d like more is for teams to keep the RRs as alternates, like Calgary.

I wish they'd take a page from the AHL and ECHL, and have "theme night" jerseys. Like superheroes, autism awareness, Star Wars, various "heritage" nights, camouflage for Veteran's Day, jerseys of a defunct local team... Yesterday was the "kids" game in Chicago. They use all kinds of children's drawings in their social media. It could be fun to base a jersey on one of those drawings. They could pick one from a previous year. I'd love to see a 4-year-old's interpretation of every team's jersey.

Its really tough but some teams just have so much material to work with like LA or even Boston but this time around it really shows that Detroit and some other teams really struggle with it. I totally agree with your take on the meaning behind reverse retro. I watched a rating by the bar down guys on tsn and they were so mad at jerseys because "this was their chance to do something the team has never done before". I chuckled because the definition of retro is going back to something previous, not new. They missed the point, looking for something new and fresh. The teams that respected what was asked truly stand out, whether they are the finest looking of the bunch or not. As in Tampa and Calgary, they are kind of crazy and somewhat ugly. But that's what makes them great.

My personal take on the Flames RR 2.0 A lot of Flames fans never liked the pedestal in the first place. Many Flames fans never liked the fact that black has become an adopted secondary colour for Calgary teams since the mid 90s. (Stamps/Hitmen/Flames) I don't mind the jersey, but the horizontal stitching in the front that divides the pedestal from the chest is very noticeable. Makes it look cheaper imo. I also love black on red, like you stated, it pops(especially with the white "C"), eventhough the colour scheme is very overused in the NHL. The 03/04 Flames home jersey was one of the most popular jerseys in Canada. (especially during the Stanley Cup run). I would love to see a RR black jersey of that design. A white "C" would really pop on that.

I loved those. And the flaming horse was on the shoulders. Yet the Flames inexplicably got rid of the pretty mountain landscape on the tail. And put some goofy vertical black stripes or panels on the sides running up into the arms. That was a bad decision. Just stick with the flawless jerseys from the 2004 Stanley Cup run. Those were perfect.

The Devils have artists designing warmup jerseys. They had a cool one for Chinese New Year last year, but they only auctioned off player worn jerseys. They didn't sell them.

Alternate jerseys will never get old or flood the market, fans will keep buying them as long as they are good. There's endless possibilities where the NHL can go after reverse retro. They could pick a specific decade? 70's, 80's, 90's. if a team wasn't around then, then just make what you think the team would have worn during that time. Have fun with it. Future designs? City pride? Minor league retro, rival colors, color rush etc. it's endless!

I agree. I remember when “Sunday Jerseys” came out. It was the beginning of “Third Jerseys” and only some teams had them. The Penguins had them if I’m not mistaken this was the debut of the gradient/robó penguin. Bring back the Sunday Jersey where the home team wears their custom Jersey on Sundays.

I also have watched a lot of the Reverse Retro reviews. And many don't have the Flames that high. They can't get over the random diagonal stripe that comes up out of the tail and clashes with the horizontal stripe. I would probably put it in my top 10. I initially liked it even more. But then TheJerseyZone correctly pointed out there is some weird seam where the stripes intersect that makes the jersey stand out in a bad way.

32 Teams and you do a jersey contest like what the CHL is doing. They only let you vote on the top 3 chosen by the team/league and I think you can only vote on 1 team's jersey everyday, which would prevent the whole voting for your rival's jersey concept. Granted several of the jerseys that made it through this year look like practice jerseys.

NHL should just do what soccer teams do and have a home, away and 3rd kit. and i think the away kit shouldn't just be a white version of the home kit. actually do different designs to make each jersey unique and different. The new Rangers jersey i got last season is virtually identical to my first jersey when i was 16 in 1994.

Hey Shannon, 2 weeks late here but here’s your resident ducks fan on what we think the jersey situation is The orange has different striping than the RR Now, with all the rumors saying the ducks will refit with the might duck logo, speculation is now that the RR will have a black counterpart as the home sweater going forward starting next year. So I don’t personally think the orange sweater lives past this season. Also a “throwback” night is scheduled for dec 30, and the weird thing is it’s not a reverse retro night So we might have a “heritage” kit with the eggplant and jade in Anaheim

How about a color-swap jersey? Something where the team uses alternate colors that may or may not have anything to do with the hockey club. For example - St. Louis Blues could do a jersey in St. Louis Cardinals colors. Calgary Flames could do a blue jersey, because actual flames often have a blue hue to them. Seattle Kraken could do jerseys in the color of the Seahawks, and so on and so on....

My favorite jersey are those dark San Jose ones, I'm surprised those didn't become the new home jersey. I think it would be cool to raffle off designing your local team's jersey. Give the fan an artist if they need help getting it designed.

It would depend on who would have the rights to making the uniforms after next season. If they want a go at the rr uniforms I'll be all for it but I wouldn't mind if they come up with something different. Also, I wouldn't mind if the Islanders have the original fisherman as a third jersey and the Sabres goring back to the goathead full time but with the blue and gold.

I personally would like it to keep going, but I do think this is the last year. If only because Adidas is leaving, and whoever is supplying jerseys after this will want to put their own stamp on special jersey releases and probably won’t want to continue what Adidas started.

I got the first Kings RR, I want the second Kings RR, but that's my second team. The Detroit's first was nonsense, the second got so close but instead of being a retro that is reversed, they changed the white to black. It makes sense that the NHL needs to do something new, but I am really sad about not being able to have a special Detroit jersey that isn't terrible, as I wasn't an adult with money yet when they played their special event games.

I know what you mean, I’m considering picking up the RR this year just as a “please do more things, please” and also because I have a hat that would match it well. I’m clearly not particularly excited about it though. And same thing, I had no money when any of the other jerseys came out and now they’re TOO expensive on resale. I did find a 2014 winter classic for a stupid price in a local shop in Lansing but ill be looking for the other winter classic and the centennial for quite a while I suspect.

Given what the Panthers did for this year's RR jerseys with the shoulder patch being the main logo and the light blue base, I think the Leafs can do that with their TML shoulder logos from the early 2000s era over top of a Leaf shaped silhouette and play with different colour variations of that. Maybe a silver, maybe a light blue logo (like the indigenous warm up jersey from a couple weeks ago that EVERYONE LOVES and wanted the Leafs to make for sale or make an alternate jersey version of it...maybe a black TML (I know we have the black Biebers now) But I think there are still some styles that the leafs can exhaust. Canadiens would be more tricky, so you have a point with that one.

I agree that this should be the last reverse retro set for a while and Calgary's is definitely one of the top ones. I am going to disagree with the notion that Anaheim's jersey wouldn't work with the Orange and Eggplant colors. There is another channel that did something called a "NHL Color Rush Jersey concepts" and the Anaheim jersey on it was mainly orange with eggplant, white and green trim, and was absolutely fire!

More reverse retros are already impossible for many teams. Agreeing with Shannon, the next round could be something like alternate alternates, something COMPLETELY new. This would help the more conservative logo changing teams. Like, the Maple Leafs could still have a maple leaf, but make it not blue or white, and instead replace it with a color that a leaf actually has (ideally fall-themed, since that's where the season starts and ends with them). Or, something with multiple LEAVES, spelled correctly. Speaking of teams with grammatically incorrect names, the Flyers could have some kind of a pamphlet logo. Or something that flies, whatever. The Red Wings could have a Maxi-Pad logo, but that might be out-dated. I realize these are all silly ideas and I'm not hating on any of these teams, but a clean slate for everyone as alternate alternates might be pretty fun.

Basically ive noticed this round of reverse retro jerseys peoples placement of these varies way more then round 1. Personally i feel the majority of these are not as good as round 1 although some teams round 2 version is much better (isles) some have great versions for both (blues+kings)

For some reason a lot of people seem to not like having a bunch of jerseys but personally I get so bored when there’s only a few. I’m a flames fan and last year we only had the home and away and I got so damn bored. I really want the NHL to go to the point where every team has 10 different uniforms each year.

I could see a city jersey or color rush series or even a series where they are all experimental stadium series like jerseys but I think reverse retro is done for now.

I don't know if they do another round of these jerseys? However, I do see that the NHL likes money, and another round of some type of unique, league-wide jerseys is very possible. Perhaps a 'Mascot' Series of jerseys?

All I want is to see the Rangers 85th anniversary reversed. Been asking for it since the winter classic against Philadelphia. A cream base, dark red and navy blue lettering / striping? They would be flying off the shelves. I always wonder who is in charge of these designs at teams. Fan bases are pretty easy to please yet more than half of every “new” jersey concept seems to be a massive miss.

As an Oilers fan I do like the jersey they revealed but I definitely would have loved just a white Mcfarlane logo jersey literally the same jersey just in white, or even a 90s jersey in the copper color maybe. And for Ottawa I would have loved a red or white word mark I really liked that jersey. Maybe they can do a city jersey kinda like the NBA did I believe like take something special about your city and represent it on the jersey kinda like the Blues “arch” jerseys

The Adidas jerseys are more comfortable to wear than the Reebok versions so these Retro Reverse are good with only two editions. So yes no more are needed.

Fun fact: Conn Smythe changed the team name to maple leafs part way through the 26-27 season, and, for that half a season only, they wore a green maple leaf logo before going blue the next year.

I think they're fun but yeah some teams just don't have a lot of options. Kinda ironic the newest and oldest teams suffer the same issue. Personally I would want to see another round just because I love seeing that old Stars logo. We'll have to see though since the Adidas contract is expiring, so RR 3.0 could just be rereleases from 1 anc 2 just on new jerseys.

It's kind of like the outdoor games. The first few were cool and now you see venue's and teams being recycled cause they play too many of them. Once something works once they feel like they have to over do it to death. Uniforms are getting to this point. It's hard to identify teams cause every game they were different uniforms. For people like me who collects jerseys as well It's cool but the average fan might not have a clue

I think the mistake was having all 32 teams do these at the same time. Go back to having the teams release alternate jerseys (or not) on their own time frame.

Make the Reverse Retro a regular jersey in the line up and teams change it up as they want. Would make them still special but teams can control it when they want to. It would kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Keeps the RRs but also keeps them special and they don't run out of designs or at least as quickly.

Completely agree 100% with this topic. When the rumors started about RRs 2.0 i thought, i hope this doesn’t keep going on a regular basis. Some teams don’t have much of a history, logos, colors or jersey designs to come up with a ‘Reverse Retro’. I think i must be the only one who liked the Leafs first Reverse Retro. Their are some youtubers who don’t like certain colored jerseys. Like for instance someone said they wish that the Lightning’s new storm jersey was black. Ok so that would just be a throwback. I do think it should’ve been gray instead of white. When it rains it’s usually dark-gray sky. Some said the Bruins should’ve been black..ok so then to be able to see the bear i guess make it a yellow one? Their white jersey is fantastic & it wouldn’t work as black. The one team that i thought messed up with the primary color was Buffalo..the goathead should’ve been on a blue jersey.

I think the NHL should do another round of jerseys, but every team has to use a brand new logo. They can change or keep their colours if they want, but they need to use a completely new logo. I think it would be almost like a free attempt. If it flops, you wear it a few times and then just move on. But for some teams, I think they could take advantage of it and do some really cool stuff if given the option.

I feel like if Toronto wanted to go different they should do one with the green st. Pats. I'm surprised that the preds didn't go navy when they had the opportunity. If it's cause of the backlash from the stadium series I can promise you it's not cause that was navy and it wouldn't have looked any better on yellow. I knew the pens wouldnt but i thought a blue 70s style jersey would have been fun. As someone who lives in Pittsburghs area always having black and gold really limits your colour choices

Maybe they can do what the NBA or MLB are doing and maybe try a "city" edition. Have the jerseys in the colors that represent the area.

As the Adidas era is over after 23/24 season and if it takes nearly 2 years to get the RR designs all sorted out, then yes this will definitely be the last RR set. If / when the new contract is given to Nike or whoever, then probably the next set of special jerseys will probably happen in the 2nd year of the new deal. If it is Nike, then it will probably be 'City Edition' jerseys like they've done with the NBA teams.
