The unfortunate thing is, there is no argument, it simply shouldn't have been a goal, the play should've been blown dead. Garry Galley said it best, "this was a fantastic game and it shouldn't have ended this way"

I don't want refs calling or not calling things they don't see, I want them reviewing these plays. If the rules were that it could be reviewed, neither of those calls would be as controversial.
@tacofop600
@tacofop600 5 жыл бұрын
That's the thing, if we have to choose a lesser of two evils, then yeah, I prefer the refs not changing the call if they didn't actually see it, I can live with that more than just winging it based on circumstantial evidence. But ultimately, what the fans want is for the right call to be made, and like Marchessault said after the Vegas call, it's a fast game and clearly sometimes the refs need help. Expand replay to make more of these calls reviewable to avoid having situations like this happen what seems like every game.

@Masa That's not how the ruling would work though. It could be they can challenge a play and if the call stands, it is a minor penalty. Why is it that you can challenge for an offsides goal or goalie interference, but when something like a hand pass happens it can't be reviewed?

Agreed. My question is why the NFL reviews all scoring plays, MLB has review available for any and all calls, the NBA has review available for something even like a flagrant foul. The NHL alone is the only one that has non-reviewable calls. Also when every television network shows a puck that clearly crossed the goal line, we hear about how they have this 'secret view' that is only available to the NHL? If it proves that they are correct and that the officials got a call right, why wouldn't you want to show it to the World? Sorry for ranting on your comment, I couldn't help myself.

What makes it worse is that every rink shows replays on the scoreboard. The crowd sees replays of the missed calls, the players see the missed calls and I'll bet even the officials see the missed calls. And there's nothing anyone can do about these missed calls because of the way video replay is implemented by the NHL.
@gnolls

@@jarink1 Since it's essentially going down the lines of everyone wants everything to be reviewable and that simply isn't possible, I'd say it would be better if we got rid of video review altogether. The easy solution is let the coach review be allowed on anything, they are still limited to one (could become two) a game so it doesn’t slow the game down but on a horrible call like this there is a way to review it.

@@vooswing I dont know why they just dont alter the rule 78.8; the last minute of the 3rd period and anytime in OT the NHL automatically reviews all goals that are within the coaches challenge, all they have to do is look at the goal, guaranteed the NHL looked at the goal as it happened just because they will to save time, if they just look at all goals in that rule instead of ones that are coaches challenge it would fix these issues.

So the refs to me did the correct thing none of them saw it so how can they call it. To me this is all on Toronto and the fact that they deem this something that can't be reviewed as the refs would have for sure called no goal if they could actually go back and look at the play. Yet even when they went to Toronto their was no benefit as the people in Toronto for something that isn't reviewable aren't allowed to tell them yea it was a handpass so no goal instead all they can say is what did you guys see nothing well then you have to allow it.

My complaint isnt with the sharks or the refs, its with the league. How are these plays not reviewable, but offsides is? If the league wanted to adopt a 0-review policy and simply live with mistakes, we could accept that and just deal with the fallout. But clearly review is an option, and this call was easy, important, and unfortunately 100% incorrect. Its a fast game...if we have the technology to review, and the policies in place for review, why not empower the refs to get the calls right on these types of plays?
@keepingitreel...8037

Especially an OT playoff goal! Personally I think all goals, or potential goals, should be automatically reviewed, and if a flaw has been detected by the NHL, play is stopped and the call on the ice has been overturned. Then show what they saw on the replay scoreboard. The NFL reviews all Touchdowns to get it right! The reason I said, 'potential goals' above, was because in a recent Bruin's game, the Carolina goaltender clearly caught the puck in his Trapper, and then rolled inside his net. The glove, with puck in it, did not, "just barely" go over the goal line. It almost touched the back of the net. That should have absolutely been counted as a Bruin's goal! Just because a goalie has caught the puck, doesn't necessarily make it a, "save." Then a puck clearly goes up into the protective netting, comes back down and ends up in the back of the Bruin's net, and IS counted as a good goal. Unbelievable! (But at least the Bruins still won. St Louis has the Blues for a legitimate reason. . . Again, every goal, or potential goal should be reviewed, even if play continues. If a discrepancy is discovered, fix it. Get it Right!
@danielmulno

I am not a Blues or a Sharks fan but I think anytime the puck ends up in the net it should be reviewed, every goal should be video checked just like football. It really does not take that much time in the NFL and shouldn't here.

Agreed I think the NHL is going to have to change some rules for the game, I agree all goals should be reviewable and so should any play that causes injury, the complaint I have heard about more reviews is it slows the game, but if I guy is down on the ice the game is stopped might as well take the chance to get the call right. And goals most goals won't take long to check only a few will.
@danielmulno
@danielmulno 5 жыл бұрын
@@kyleklem4045 yeah, I understand the game getting slowed down, but I'd rather the game be 15 minutes longer and a much higher percentage of calls be right then a game be decided by a non-reviewable play that should have been overturned. Right now a standard three period hockey game with no overtime takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, making it 3 hours for more accuracy on calls is worth it.

As a Sharks fan....it is baffling. It's where the puck was. I mean, i get there was a lot of players kind of around the play and especially someone like Boumeester isn't the easiest to see around or through, but you ARE a professional Ref in the NHL. Getting yourself in position and at least one of you should be watching the puck and what is going on around it. But just like earlier in the game, one of them should have seen the delay of game, Perron is actually the one who committed that and he was the one who scored the game tying goal when he should have been in the box. In the case of the headshot, that might have been the most startling one. They had a replay of it where Braun just flat out gets drilled in the jaw. The ref was staring at it and put his whistle away. Delay of Game and hand passes should absolutely be reviewable and i don't think that goal should have counted. I have seen the sharks over the years get some really rough calls against them including a series ender/loser that was totally baffling from the officiating stand point, so i totally get it. But like you said...you can't blame them. The players don't make the calls, they just have to react to and play through them good or bad. The sharks have had a handful of bad ones this playoff run that either went against them or went uncalled and they played through them and didn't make excuses for them. They have 2 that went in their favor. The Vegas one, even Pavelski himself came out and said he didn't think it should have been a 5, but was obviously happy it did because it cracked the window open for them slightly. But as we are reminded, This is part of professional sports. Every single one of them don't seem to get everything right and it really sucks when your team is on the short end of a call.

Stu Pidas the goal line ref had one blue maybe partially blocking the view but looked to me like he had a pretty clear line to see a player swing his hand and a puck go from falling straight down to deflecting right into the slot should have enough to deduce that a hand pass happened. The eakin play changed it all though cause the refs don’t want backlash for using their brains too, now they are only allowed to rely on their eyes. Scoring plays need to be reviewable with a a time limit. Won’t slow the game down much, hell just use a commercial time out and soo many of these clear calls can be corrected

NO ONE defended Karlsson in front of the net. Binnington didn’t make the save. There’s more to this play than Timo Meier’s hand, but I’m not expecting any of that to be talked about. How did they even do it? Perhaps a few more should be added, like football. . . NHL Rule change for the 2019-20 season: On ice officials: Rule 1.234 There shall be 1 linesman on each blue line, for a total of 2. There shall be 1 referee on each goal line, for a total of 2. There shall be 1 referee at each face off dot, for a total of 9. There shall be 1 referee inside each goal, for a total of 2. Off ice officials: Rule 1.235 There shall be 1 referee in each penalty box, for a total of 2. There shall be 1 referee on the Zamboni, for a total of 1 There shall be 1 referee on a ladder, just above the glass, every 10 feet, for a total of 60. And a grand total of 78. Each official shall stay focused, and wear working body cams as well as helmet cams, and a loud whistle.

I don't really understand why we have unreviewable plays. Like we've gone to far on offsides but still don't have review for this. Let's just make it to where anything that happens in the 5 seconds prior to the goal can be reviewed or something of that nature so that we can review anything that directly leads to a goal. Not an offsides from 3 minutes ago, but something like this or the Columbus goal that hit the netting. Though the issue with that time deadline would become "Did the illegal play that was missed happen at the 5 second mark or the 5.01 second mark?" which would create its own problems, but the basic idea still stands

Yes, it was a hand pass and the goal should've been waved off. As a Sharks fan, that's clear as day. But don't act like the Sharks weren't screwed by a few game changing calls earlier in the game. Perron's delay of game was just as obvious and wasn't called. He then scored 2 goals when he should've been in the box. Then Blais gets away with a shoulder to the head of Braun that was similar to McAvoy's hit. And even on the hand pass goal, Meier was tripped before, which partly caused the hand pass. Even if the goal is disallowed, it should've resulted in a power play. So the Sharks got a lucky break and the timing has been unreal, but they're getting just as many bad calls as the other teams.

I'm a bit of a Sharks fan, and there's a bitter taste in my mouth. I'd love to see Karlsson, Thornton, Burns, Couture, etc win a cup, but not like this. Sure, Vegas shouldn't have allowed four goals on a five minute major, yes Landeskog was offside, and I guess the refs didn't want to call what they didn't see tonight, but these aren't convincing victories for the Sharks. It took them seven games to beat the seventh and eighth seeds, and then only with some lucky calls. At this point, I'm cheering for the Blues. We should start a pool on what quirky call/rule will result in the Sharks' next game 7 victory... I'm gonna go with: Jones stick handles the puck past the center ice line a-la Patrick Roy... but the refs don't see it. Making it to the blue line, he then picks up the puck and throws it over Binnington, into the netting... But the refs still don't see it... The puck somehow falls into the slot, where a Blues' defenseman tries to clear it. However the puck is redirected by an oddly placed linesman into the skates of Karlsson, and into the net. Please forgive any spelling errors.

Hey Shannon, good point about other fans outraged just because it’s the sharks are on the receiving end of bad officiating. Most people fail to notice the tripping on bouwmeester prior to the hand pass and therein lies the reason. What others fans also don’t realize is that sharks fan have experienced these post season bad calls and missed calls at least since 05 when we started consistently making the playoffs. And year after year there was no universal outrage, no call to modify the rules. We were just told that our team were chokers and that’s just how the game goes and now I understand that good teams never let it come down to a controversial call, they produce and make bad calls a non factor. Thumbs up to the second half of your comment. Play is not reviewable because it did not cause the goal. The puck did not go off a players hands into the net or deflect off a player. It was clearly shot into the net. They cannot review anything prior to a goal just because there is an issue. If the goal itself was controversial (interference, didn't cross the line, high stick, etc.) then that is reviewed.

@nabokovfan87

@@cmd31220 think of it like NFL, when they review a td to make sure the player had his feet in and possession. Essentially, you don't want to reward a team if they didn't actually get in. They will verify the catch, but not check for holding and that cannot be reviewed or challenged. Now think about hockey, if you have an offsides, you have a play where the player who is offsides has an advantage that others do not. You, by the very nature of the game, shouldn't be allowed to sit in front of the goalie and just wait for the puck or skate ahead of the puck to chip a guy, any other scenarios where the play ahead of the puck dramatically impacts the defensive play. Offsides is reviewable simply because of that disadvantage and wanting to keep the game fair. The hand pass can be argued, offsides isn't subjective, it's very clear.
@josiegradwohl106
@josiegradwohl106 5 жыл бұрын
@@nabokovfan87 You make a good point about the nature of an offside review in the case that someone is parking in front of the goalie or has an inherent advantage over the defense, but the offside review in the SJ/COL game is where I take issue with the review process. Colorado was offside by a fraction and the player was heading off of the ice, so it can't be argued that Colorado had any advantage over the San Jose defense, yet it was overturned because it fell in line with the rules. I'm not arguing that it shouldn't have been called, but it points to how inconsistent the review process is in the current rulebook. If an offside call can be so cut and dry in the review process, I don't see why we can't expand the review process to cover goal scoring and any calls that Toronto can prove the refs got wrong with the replay. As a Blues fan I'm obviously enraged about the hand pass last night, but the refs also missed a delay of game penalty on the Blues for the puck that went out of play. Hockey is such a fast paced game that expecting the refs to see everything isn't realistic, which is why I think the replays and reviews in Toronto should be utilized more. The most important thing on these calls is that we (as fans) know that they are fair, and there has been a overwhelming number of calls this postseason that have been wrong which have had a dramatic impact on the outcome of the game and even the series.

There definitely will be some rule changes this off-season or at least should be. One thing I want to see is the change of what's challengeable. I think you should be allowed to challenge any type of "controversial call" and instead of levying a timeout if you lose the challenge it's a delay of game penalty. This can be and not limited to: a player embellishing a penalty, shooting the puck over the glass, kicking the puck into the net, hand passes resulting in goals, the puck hitting the screen bouncing back in and then a goal occuring, players scoring in the crease (I'll explain later), scoring a goal immediately after a quick whistle blows but the whistle had no affect on the play (2017 Cup Final). There should be an automatic review for "extreme penalties" to determine if the player should get ejected and/or if it's a major (just like targeting in football and flagrants in basketball). Offsides doesn't need to be challenged, they're judgement calls like icings. There should be a crease violation like in international hockey. If there's a rebound and players start digging and piling up in the paint then play is called dead and there's a faceoff at center ice. If contact occurs with the goalie while the player is standing outside of the crease then it's allowed. Goalie interference is a penalty and it occurs with dangerous contact to the goalie not nicking the goalie. Just use the IIHF crease violation rule and we will not have this problem. Either take the cross-checking penalty out of the game or call every single one you see including the taps by defensemen on forwards near the front of the net, not just the ones that send the player into the boards. Will these reviews and challenges slow down the game? No, 30 second time limit if you can't make up your mind within 30 seconds the call on the ice stands. Also, implement the syntax rule like in football: the ref has the option to say the call stands, confirmed, or reversed. Stands means the evidence wasn't sufficient, Confirmed and Reversed means it was sufficient enough to determine an absolute conclusion. This gives everyone a sense of what's going on in the refs head. It's just food for thought

There's so much money tossed around the league, youd' think they'd hire a couple people to make a fair rulebook. I get why some things are not reviewable (to prevent long breaks), but if a rule is broken and it is within the timeframe of the 2nd assist, it should be looked at

It had to end in controversy, it's so fitting. Gritty is in with the hockey Gods and we're in chaos. P.s. Shannon, I'm so sad. I said Montreal barely missing was the worst possible scenario, but my least 2 favorite teams being the likely finalists?! I underestimated worst possible scenario. This went horribly. This is my nightmare forming. Now if St. Louis wins I'm happy, Carolina I'm whatever with, SJ I don't like at all, and Boston is awful, worst case scenario, nightmare inducing, disaster level awful Props for resisting the Dunn is done. Delay of game is the one free pass refs get usually and I've seen clear delay of games this playoffs not called. This possibly was a mistake but others seemed ignored. Why not take the freebie?!

This is probably the only time I've ever heard a Knights fan admit they had a chance to overcome the call. People conveniently forget that Knights and Sharks went into OT with a clean slate. Was it a hand pass, 100%. But if we're going off the Vegas series and what we learned, we are going off the mindset that if you didn't see it you're not making the call right. Definitely changes need to be made.

rsuninv They did. And each one was blocked by a different player at a critical time. How hard is it to watch a replay and look to see if what you are saying has any validity? You're on youtube, go look at the play. Look where the refs are (exactly where they should be), go look at where they are looking (directly where they should be), and look at the moment the puck starts to wobble down and draw a straight line from their eyes to the puck. And then notice the different players movement right into that line you drew. Unless they have xray eyes there was no way for them to see it.

Also fewer games to watch means he can just focus on watching the details of that game rather than just checking the stats. Shannon needs to be able to replay game footage so we can learn more!

Good take on it Shannon. The refs did what they were supposed to do, if they learned from the Vegas major penalty. However it is silly that they all missed the hand pass in the first place. I get that it happened fast though, I didn't realize it was a hand pass either until the replay. I was confident that the Sharks were gonna ride the tying goal momentum to an OT victory anyway, I would have preferred to win in a less controversial manner.

Hey Franky boy - It was actually 4 goals and, with you obviously clueless about hockey, there is no team left that can beat the Bruins! Let alone, "hand Boston their asses." Lol The only things the winner of the West will determine, is where the Bruins will play their away games, and who's team will watch the Boston Bruins hoist another Cup! Bruins are too deep. They don't rely on 1 scorer like Logan Couture or a couple of scorers like the Blues. Although Bergeron has 8 goals, Marchand and Pastrnak have 7 each, and Coyle has 6, the Bruins have 19 different goal scorers in these playoffs. Boston's defense is very good. The Power play is the best in the playoffs. The PK is good, too. And, oh yeah, there's Tuukka Rask! He just happens to lead all playoff goaltenders in every single category! In fact, he currently is even ahead of Tim Thomas's 2011, Con Smyth winning season. Bruins have a perfect mix of veteran talent and youthful speed and skill, and they have a lot of playoff experience and success. Only 2 NHL teams have been to the Stanley Cup finals 3 times in this decade. Blackhawks and Bruins. The last time St Louis was in a Cup final, Bobby Orr scored that famous OT goal to, not only win the game, and not only win the series and the Stanley Cup, but also to complete the 4 game sweep! This shows you the state of mind of the Sharks btw, what that player did has been against the rules and the spirit of the game but he never hesitated to try it because they're scum bags and at this point they know theres a good chance they'll get away with it. Now the Blues are 0-4 in the postseason when Marc Joannette plays, i mean officiates against them and the Sharks are 6-1 when he plays with them, i mean officiates for them.

I shouldn't be surprised that there are Sharks fans who truly believe they deserved to win this game, but I can understand why they are trying to tell themselves that. There is a huge difference between a goal that is scored on the play of a blown call, and an opportunity that is missed because of a blown call. The difference is between a goal that was actually scored, and merely an opportunity to score. Missing a call is bad, and missing a call on a play that a goal was scored on is horribly bad! If I have to spell out the difference for you any more than that then you will never get it. This entire Sharks post-season has been a complete mockery of the sport at this point, and that is exactly how it will be remembered until the end of time. I honestly feel sorry for objective Sharks fans as much as I feel sorry for the fans whose teams were robbed of games and of their series. The degree to which the NHL is failing both the teams and the fans is way too damn high. This entire post season is tainted and rotten beyond all repair.

Additionally, I just want to make it clear that I think the Sharks are a great team. They absolutely do have as much skill and talent as any of the other conference finalists. This entire situation is a sh*t show, and the Sharks organization, players, and fans deserved so much better than this. Something drastic needs to change in the way the NHL officiates games. It's time to actually used some of the great technology we have at our fingertips. This post-season didn't have to be this way.

The NHL has to make a decision to use their resources in these cases moving forward this summer. calls that are quite obviously not a judgmental call (delay of game, hand pass) have to be reviewable. I would not be shocked if the NHL just did a full review for every scoring play.

also just my opinion but offside review is awful and should go away. there is really no distinct advantage for being an inch in front of the line versus an inch behind. the review should be initiated by the situation room and there should be verbiage to make it to the discretion of the situation room and that the offsides has to be egregious or detrimental to play
