I live 12 miles from the arch he's been at every bar every street he was at the parade he's living it up LOL it's great. If I remember correctly, Hull also got 50 in 50 during the 91/92 season. I think Gretzky is the only other player to do it multiple times. The one ability of Hull's that really stood out to me is that it seemed like every single shot he took was on goal. He always forced the goalie to make a save. And his one-timer was deadly. Just a pure sniper, great scorer. As a young Blues fan, he was a joy to watch. In St. Louis, they say he built the new arena. The team was struggling financially and when he came on, the money started rolling in. Near the end of his tenure in St. Louis was when the new arena was built and the "Old Barn" torn down.

The (now) Enterprise Center in St. Louis is very much the house that Hull built. I think the Blues ‘couldn’t win because of Hull’ narrative was never completely believed by the Blues fan base and quickly forgotten after he left and won cups while the Blues continued to flounder. It is true that Hull was pretty un-coachable during his younger days in STL and a big difference in Dallas was Hitch forcing him to commit to defensive play as well.

Watched your whole video, and thank you for defending Hull. I remember when he came here, and you're right, with Oates, he was so fierce in scoring goals. I also remember when KPLR (the Blues affiliate at the time) did the expose on the 50 goals in 50 games (I also remember when he achieved it). That was impressive, and yeah, I became a Hull fan- I was there when they dedicated his statue in front of Enterprise Center. Other than being known for being drunk all the time now, I'm glad you're showing how good a hockey player he was, because I don't think we see another Blues player put up that kind of scoring again. Hull is a St. Louis treasure. He always loved playing here and said in interviews that he has fond memories of playing at the old Arena. He never really wanted to leave. With just a few minor tweaks, those '90s teams would have been Cup contenders, but we all know what happened with management. Hull is having just as much fun with this as anyone else.

They were kinda stacked but a lot of injuries happened throughout that year. Cards had so many guys step up when it mattered most which is what made them a great TEAM. Because of that, they beat several teams that were supposed to be better. in 91-92, Adam oates only played 61 games, and Brett scored 86 goals. in 92-93, Oates played 52 games, hull scored 70 goals. While oates was good with Hull, people give Oates a little too much credit for Hull. Hull scored even without oates. they were just both better together. Hull was a much better player overall than he will ever be given credit for (more due to his personality)

I very much liked and appreciated your video with the legend (In STL anyway), "The Golden Brett". The reason there were over 500,000 fans (conservative number) celebrating with the blues after their victory, the frustration was over and Brett Hull's time in STL started that frustration. The Blues should have won the cup in 90-91, no question. Some would argue 91-92 should have been a championship, the Blues were known as the team that chokes in the playoffs, in STL anyway. Making the playoffs every year from 85-03, never a cup. To the other post about Brett being drunk, THATS why he was drunk and I don't blame him. Awesome channel.

Always had runnings with the coach. Even with Bob Johnson and Terry Crisp with the Calgary Flames. Most famously or infamously with Mike Keenan. St. Louis won that trade but the depth in return helped in the 1989 Stanley Cup.

It should be noted his production dipped also when we started to enter the dead puck era after the Devils cup win in 95. Scoring dipped until the next lockout so guys who were just ppg were very good.

I remember reading an article in the Post-Dispatch after Hull signed with Dallas and it was heavily implied that the Blues would be better off, because Hull was viewed as undisciplined and that he ultimately undermined the coaches. No one doubted that the Blues played great when Hull was on the ice. The theory was that the team would benefit more from not having a guy that was above the coaches, which would benefit 20+ guys. I’ve heard similar stories from former Penguin players about Lemieux. If the coaches told Lemieux’s group to bag skate, Lemieux would just tell the boys, “No, we’re not doing that. Haha.” And they’d love Lemieux for it, but the coaches were powerless to do anything about it. The difference, though, is that Lemieux had won his Cups before that. Hull hadn’t. And the Blues did actually appear to be improving after Hull left, though, in hindsight it appears that was more of Quinneville and Pleau stabilizing the roster after firing Keenan.

As a StL fan/season ticket holder, I'll amend your impression a little bit. The problem was that he wasn't really a "leader" but the Blues were forcing him into that uncomfortable role. He wasn't the guy to build a team around, but He wasn't poison. He could be a great cog in the machine, just don't ask him to be the lynch-pin (excuse me if that's a mixed metaphor). Dallas and Detroit both used him to great advantage. Side note about O'Reilly- He IS a leader, he'll get the A next year, and would get the C if not for Pietrangelo

Felt like he really wanted the cup bad for St. Louis. Call me crazy & superstitious but Laila was our good inspirational angel & Brett our break them, destroy them and win at all costs one sitting on the player's other shoulder's. And the Archangel Berube who completes the Blues Trinity that brought redemption. And yeah, at this point I'm not even going to try to be rational anymore and just admit it was magic on ice and I'm still loving every minute of these guys celebrating with their fans like normal people, Vlad handing out pizza, just all of them being so pardon my French but F-ing proud and yet modest. Losing Stevens hurt the team for years. They lost Stevens for signing Shanahan, and the Judge ruled in favor of NJ, giving the Blues C and leader. Blues it wasn't until Keenan (only good thing he did) traded Shanahan for Pronger that they had another top D man.

STL was unbelievably blessed to have Brett Hull play Hockey here, the blues have never replaced Adam Oates , they went so far out of their way to get Stevens, Shanahan, Gretzky, and others, and wasted all that time and money on Keenan, when if they just would have kept Oates they probably would have had 2-3 cups by now instead of 1. Ya none of that was Brett Hull's fault, other than he was a mess and still is, as entertaining as he can be, it's sad to watch him consistently make a fool of himself.

All the offer sheet debacles, Shanahan, then what happened to Stevens, Oates, Shanahan and Janney, the first round picks that the Blues owed the other franchises, Gilmour, Brindamour, trading a bunch of guys to Vancouver and the Janney ordeal, the Mike Keenan disaster, letting Brett Hull leave, getting nothing for Chris Pronger (perceived at the time, I get they got Brewer, traded him to Tampa, we drafted Binnington). If the Blues would’ve had solid ownership, maybe we don’t wait 52 years for a cup.

Peter Zezel was Hull’s center when he scored 72 Oates was his center when he scored 86 Oates was traded mid year the next year and his centers switched. Hull and Oates only played 1.5 years together as linemates.

I heard Terry crisp the Calgary coach didn't like Brett and his fun loving college party ways so he wanted him out as a blues fan thank you coach crisp who by the way was a blues player on the earlier blues cup teams 68-70. I never blamed Brett once for the playoff heartbreak. Management was awful from getting rid of Scott Stevens ,rod brindamour, and Adam oates. Mike Keenan a disaster and I always wondered why the blues never kept Bob Barry as head coach who led the blues to a sweep over the heavily favored hawks in 93 who I believe we're president trophy winners that wasn't good enough? Brett did all he could and helped make hockey popular in saint Louis again.

Very good analysis of his career. I always liked Hull back in the day thought he was a good sniper obviously. I actually think his career is very similar to Phil Kessel. How they're portrayed by the media and how they both ended up winning a couple Stanley Cups and I'm sure by the end of the day Kessel will probably be in the Hall of Fame as well

An interesting tidbit but for most of his career Brett Hull didn't try scoring into empty nets. I just watched a Gretzky highlight reel and his 50 in 39. The last goal and who knows how many more was an empty net goal.

One quick thing, Adam Oates didn’t want out of STL, what he wanted was more money. After renegotiating his contract and still not being satisfied and wanting to do it again the Blues said no. Oates started getting very pouty and that’s when management said enough and he was dealt to Boston. Brett Hull is my favorite player of all time. As St. Louis kid who started playing hockey at 7 years old in 1987 watching his 3 straight 70+ goal seasons made him larger than life in my eyes. One of if not the greatest pure goal scorers to ever lace’em up.

I’m surprised that that the Hockey Guy didn’t mention anything about Hull’s shot - his one-timer was the deadliest shot of his era right up until his last year with Detroit (and probably Phoenix). His snap shot was also incredible. I never much cared about a player’s shot, I was always a lover of playmakers. But with Hull it was different. I think Ovechkin’s shot may be heavier, but Hull’s release was quicker and his shot more accurate. But I might wrong, that’s just the way I remember it all this years ago. All this to say, he was one of a kind.

Oates had signed a contract and I guess he saw the ridiculous numbers him and Hull were putting up decided he was worth more and demanded they renegotiate.. The Blues rightfully told him to hit the highway.
